Book Synopsis Women and the Periodical Press in China's Long Twentieth Century by : Michel Hockx
Download or read book Women and the Periodical Press in China's Long Twentieth Century written by Michel Hockx and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this major new collection, an international team of scholars examine the relationship between the Chinese women's periodical press and global modernity in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The essays in this richly illustrated volume probe the ramifications for women of two monumental developments in this period: the intensification of China's encounters with foreign powers and a media transformation comparable in its impact to the current internet age. The book offers a distinctive methodology for studying the periodical press, which is supported by the development of a bilingual database of early Chinese periodicals. Throughout the study, essays on China are punctuated by transdisciplinary reflections from scholars working on periodicals outside of the Chinese context, encouraging readers to rethink common stereotypes about lived womanhood in modern China, and to reconsider the nature of Chinese modernity in a global context.
Book Synopsis Local Governance Innovation in China by : Jessica C. Teets
Download or read book Local Governance Innovation in China written by Jessica C. Teets and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite a centralized formal structure, Chinese politics and policy-making have long been marked by substantial degrees of regional and local variation and experimentation. These trends have, if anything, intensified as China’s reform matures. Though often remarked upon, the politicsof policy formation, diffusion, and implementation at the subnational level have not previously been comprehensively described, let alone satisfactorily explained. Based on extensive fieldwork, this book explores how policies diffuse across China today, the mechanisms through which local governments actually arrive at specific solutions, and the implications for China’s political development and stability in the years ahead. The chapters examine how local-level institutions solve governance challenges, such as rural development, enterprise reform, and social service provision. Focusing on diverse policy areas that include land use, state-owned enterprise reform, and house churches, the contributors all address the same overarching question: how do local policymakers innovate in each issue area to address a governance challenges and how, if at all, do these innovations diffuse into national politics. As a study of local governance in China today, this book will appeal to both students and scholars of Chinese politics, comparative politics, governance and development studies, and also to policy-makers interested in authoritarianism and governance.
Book Synopsis Colonialism, China and the Chinese by : Peter Monteath
Download or read book Colonialism, China and the Chinese written by Peter Monteath and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the place of China and the Chinese during the age of imperialism. Focusing not only on the state but also on the vitality of Chinese culture and the Chinese diaspora, it examines the seeming contradictions of a period in which China came under immense pressure from imperial expansion while remaining a major political, cultural and demographic force in its own right. Where histories of China commonly highlight episodes of conflict and subjugation in China’s relations with the West, the contributions to this volume explore the complex spaces where empires and their peoples did not merely collide but also became entangled.

Download or read book Convenient Criticism written by Dan Chen and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why and how does critical reporting persist at the local level in China despite state media control, a hallmark of authoritarian rule? Synthesizing ethnographic observation, interviews, survey and content analysis data, Convenient Criticism reveals evolving dynamics in local governance and the state-media relationship. Local critical reporting, though limited in scope, occurs because local leaders, motivated by political career advancement, use media criticism strategically to increase bureaucratic control, address citizen grievances, and improve governance. This new approach to governance enables the shaping of public opinion while, at the same time, disciplining subordinate bureaucrats. In this way, the party-state not only monopolizes propaganda but also expropriates criticism, which expands the notion of media control from the suppression of journalism to its manipulation. One positive consequence of these practices has been to invigorate television journalists' unique brand of advocacy journalism.
Book Synopsis Eavesdropping on the Emperor by : Peter Kornicki
Download or read book Eavesdropping on the Emperor written by Peter Kornicki and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Japanese signals were decoded at Bletchley Park, who translated them into English? When Japanese soldiers were taken as prisoners of war, who interrogated them? When Japanese maps and plans were captured on the battlefield, who deciphered them for Britain? When Great Britain found itself at war with Japan in December 1941, there was a linguistic battle to be fought--but Britain was hopelessly unprepared. Eavesdropping on the Emperor traces the men and women with a talent for languages who were put on crash courses in Japanese, and unfolds the history of their war. Some were sent with their new skills to India; others to Mauritius, where there was a secret radio intercept station; or to Australia, where they worked with Australian and American codebreakers. Translating the despatches of the Japanese ambassador in Berlin after his conversations with Hitler; retrieving filthy but valuable documents from the battlefield in Burma; monitoring Japanese airwaves to warn of air-raids--Britain depended on these forgotten 'war heroes'. The accuracy of their translations was a matter of life or death, and they rose to the challenge. Based on declassified archives and interviews with the few survivors, this fascinating, globe-trotting book tells their stories.

Book Synopsis Ethical Eating in the Postsocialist and Socialist World by : Yuson Jung
Download or read book Ethical Eating in the Postsocialist and Socialist World written by Yuson Jung and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2014-02-21 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current discussions of the ethics around alternative food movements--concepts such as "local," "organic," and "fair trade"--tend to focus on their growth and significance in advanced capitalist societies. In this groundbreaking contribution to critical food studies, editors Yuson Jung, Jakob A. Klein, and Melissa L. Caldwell explore what constitutes "ethical food" and "ethical eating" in socialist and formerly socialist societies. With essays by anthropologists, sociologists, and geographers, this politically nuanced volume offers insight into the origins of alternative food movements and their place in today's global economy. Collectively, the essays cover discourses on food and morality; the material and social practices surrounding production, trade, and consumption; and the political and economic power of social movements in Bulgaria, China, Cuba, Lithuania, Russia, and Vietnam. Scholars and students will gain important historical and anthropological perspective on how the dynamics of state-market-citizen relations continue to shape the ethical and moral frameworks guiding food practices around the world.
Book Synopsis China and Europe, 1949-1995 by : David L. Shambaugh
Download or read book China and Europe, 1949-1995 written by David L. Shambaugh and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relations between China and Europe have fluctuated since 1949. This study attempts to trace the ups and downs in that course and aims to identify the major factors at play in the Sino-European relationship during the period 1949 to 1995. Today, China and the member nations of the European Union have many common interests in economics and trade, and the end of the Cold War has afforded them the opportunity to know each other better and develop relations more independently. This common knowledge is vital for the mutual peace and prosperity of both regions.
