Book excerpt: "This article reports a study that aims to investigate (1) the effects of differential listening conditions on Chinese university EFL learners' comprehension and incidental vocabulary acquisition, and (2) the relationships between the learners' metacognitive listening awareness, listening comprehension, and incidental vocabulary acquisition. The participants were 172 Chinese university students who were put in four different listening conditions: a) listening one time, b) listening three times, c) schema-raising training before listening three times, and d) inferencing training before listening three times. The participants' listening comprehension was measured by their performance in the listening tasks. The listening text of each task included five words for incidental vocabulary acquisition study. To test the participants' vocabulary knowledge, three vocabulary tests, in the order of a production test (i.e., cued recall test), a form test, and a reception test, were administered separately to the participants right after the listening tasks as immediate post-tests, and the same tests were administered again one week after the immediate tests as delayed post-tests. The participants' metacognitive listening awareness was measured by means of Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ) in five aspects as: planning-evaluation, directed attention, person knowledge, mental translation, and problem solving. ANOVAs were employed to examine the effects of the different listening conditions on the participants' listening comprehension and incidental vocabulary acquisition. The results showed that all the three-time listening groups significantly outscored the one-time listening group in both comprehension and vocabulary acquisition, but no significant group differences were found among the three-time listening groups. The participants acquired some vocabulary knowledge especially in terms of receptive and form knowledge, and there was clear evidence that the participants were able to better recognize the target words overtime. Pearson Correlations were run to investigate the relationships between the participants' metacognitive listening awareness, listening comprehension, and incidental vocabulary acquisition. The results showed that the correlations were generally on the low side, and the relationship between reported use of metacognitive strategies, listening comprehension, and incidental vocabulary acquisition was most clearly evident in the three-time listening group which received no training. One of the implications of this study is that EFL learners, generally need time to process input for listening comprehension and incidental vocabulary acquisition. Regarding metacognitive strategy training, the implication is that it takes time for the learners to be able to implement the strategies instructed to them. Besides, pedagogical suggestion is made on the design features of listening texts for the purposes of both comprehension and vocabulary acquisition."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: This interpretive case study explored the effectiveness of listening strategy instruction that promoted self-regulated learning and gained insights into students' and instructors' perceptions of strategy-integrated listening instruction among second semester learners of Chinese as a second language at a military college in Northern California. Most of previous studies investigated listening strategy use and the relationship between listening strategy use and listening achievement. Few studies investigated the effectiveness of listening strategy instruction. Thus, this study addressed the gaps in research by examining the effectiveness of integrating listening strategies into regular curriculum and explored students' and instructors' perceptions of listening strategy instruction among learners of Chinese as a second language. An interpretive case study research design was employed to achieve the goal of this study. The participants included one instructor and six students who studied at an intensive Chinese basic course. Three sources of data were collected from 25 classroom observations, a focus group session with the student participants , and a face-to-face interview with the instructor. All data were transcribed, coded, and analyzed to answer the research questions. The findings of this study showed that some of cognitive, metacognitive, and motivational strategies were identified as effective in promoting self-regulated learning among learners of Chinese as a second language. The findings also supported that listening strategy instruction helped learners raise awareness of strategy use, increase self-confidence, improve listening abilities, and foster learner autonomy and self-regulation. The findings further indicated that implementing strategy-integrated listening instruction could improve teaching quality, but might face possible challenges from teachers. Finally, the findings suggested that teacher training on integrating listening strategies into regular curriculum should be provided. This study has implications for language teachers, foreign language learners, and language course developers, who are involved in the field of foreign language teaching and learning. More research on self-regulated learning and listening strategy instruction among learners of Chinese as a second/foreign language would further expand the understanding of listening strategy instruction in the field and better assist language learners to succeed in their learning.

Abstract: This study explored the metacognitive awareness of reading strategies used among F.3 English as a Second Language (ESL) students enrolled in a band 1 secondary school in Hong Kong. Usage as well as strategic knowledge of reading strategies of high and low English proficiency students were compared quantitatively and qualitatively. In the quantitative portion of the study, 37 students responded to the Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory (MARSI), which is designed to assess matacognitive awareness and perceived usage of reading strategies of adolescent and adult ESL readers when they read school-related materials. In the qualitative portion of the study, four participants (2 female and 2 male) from the high proficiency group and four participants (2 female and 2 male) from the low proficiency group participated in a semi-structured interview, which aimed to elicit their strategic knowledge in reading English. Results revealed that Hong Kong ESL students on the whole used a wide range of reading strategies. High-proficiency ESL students were more able to verbalize the strategic knowledge and strategic resources available to them. They showed better understanding on planning for reading, monitoring their comprehension and tackling reading difficulties. In contrast, the low-proficiency group showed limited strategic knowledge on why and how to employ the reading strategies. Moreover, their utilization of reading strategies seemed to be confined to their limited lexical and vocabulary knowledge in ESL reading. Based on the findings, some practical implications for ESL reading-strategy instruction are drawn. Limitations of this study and recommendations for further research were discussed.
