The assessment is important because the administration s apparent success tends to create a path-dependent orientation on the part of its successor. Bringing together a collection of nineteen major essays, this book offers a fresh perspective of evaluating the performance and achievements of China in the Hu Wen era in terms of economic development, the establishment of a rudimentary social security system and her rising international status. The new opportunities and challenges facing China, and how will the likely successors Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang handle those opportunities and challenges, as well as new policy programmes will also be discussed in greater detail. Each essay is written by experts and scholars from different academic disciplines and backgrounds to provide readers with a unique overview of their respective areas of expertise.

In this important English translation combining the Blue Books published in 2007 and 2008, the issues, developments, challenges, and crises in Chinese education are comprehensively discussed and critically analyzed. This volume’s incisive contributions address a wide range of pressing issues including: debt caused by the expansion of higher education, quality of education, employment of graduates, corruption of scholarship, education for migrant children, the gap between policy and practice in bilingual education for minority students, the popularization of no-fee compulsory education in rural areas, reform of the national university examination system, and thorny problems faced by private daycares and private schools. The volume is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the perspective of some of China’s most critical scholars about the most pressing challenges facing education.
Book Synopsis Social policy in China by : Chan, Chak Kwan
Download or read book Social policy in China written by Chan, Chak Kwan and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2008-02-13 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This much-needed new textbook introduces readers to the development of China's welfare polices since its conception of an open-door policy in 1978. Setting out basic concepts and issues, including key terms and the process of policy making, it overcomes a major barrier to understanding Chinese social policy. The book explores in detail the five key policy areas of employment, social security, health, education and housing. Each is examined using a human well-being framework comprising both qualitative and quantitative data and eight dimensions: physical and psychological well-being, social integration, fulfilment of caring duties, human learning and development, self-determination, equal value and just polity. This enables the authors to provide not only factual information on policies but also an in-depth understanding of the impact of welfare changes on the quality of life of Chinese people over the past three decades. A major strength of the book lies in its use of primary Chinese language sources, including relevant White Papers, central and local government policy documents, academic research studies and newspapers for each policy area. There are very few books in English on social policy in China, and this book will be welcomed both by academics and students of China and East Asian studies and comparative social policy and by those who want to know more about China's social development.

Book Synopsis Culture & History of Postrevolutionary China by : Arif Dirlik
Download or read book Culture & History of Postrevolutionary China written by Arif Dirlik and published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press. This book was released on 2011-11-24 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume grew from a series of talks delivered in late 2010 as the Liang Qichao Memorial Lectures at the Academy of National Learning (Guoxue yuan) of Tsinghua University, Beijing. Offering critical perspectives on a number of ideological issues that have figured prominently in Chinese intellectual discourse since the beginning of the socalled "reform and opening" (gaige kaifang) in the late 1970s, these essays range widely in subject matter, from Marxist historiography to sociology and anthropology in China to guoxue/national studies. Together they are conceived as different windows into a basic problem: the deployment of culture and history in postrevolutionary Chinese thought. Dirlik touches on a number of themes, including the repudiation of the revolutionary past after 1978, which has led to a rise of cultural nationalism. He further places these developments within a global context, ultimately making a case methodologically for "worlding' China: bringing China into the world, and the world into China.

Book excerpt: In China, unlike in Western cinema, documentary film, rather than fiction film, has been the dominant mode since 1949. In recent years, documentary TV programmes have experienced a meteoric rise. Arguing that there is a gradual process of 'democratization' in the media, in which documentaries play a significant role, this book discusses various types of Chinese documentaries, under both the planned and the market economy. It especially explores the relationship between documentaries and society, showing how, under the market economy, although the government continues to use the genre as propaganda to promote its ideologies and policies, documentaries are being used as a medium where public concerns and alternative voices can be heard.

However, few works have examined how globalization has and will continue to shape education in the East. This volume discusses education within the context of globalization and examines what is occurring in schools and systems of education in the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Singapore, and Australia. Closer examination of recent developments and current trends reveal the same turbulence and a range of common issues in areas such as assessment, curriculum, leadership, management of change, pedagogy, policy, professional capacity and technology. This volume demonstrates the commonalities and differences and offers tremendous insight into the way things are done in places where student achievement is high but there is also a sense of urgency in continuing an agenda of change.

Book Synopsis The Subtle Logics of Knowledge Conflicts in China’s Foreign Enterprises by : Constanze Wang
Download or read book The Subtle Logics of Knowledge Conflicts in China’s Foreign Enterprises written by Constanze Wang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-04 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates knowledge interactions in China’s foreign enterprises. It reveals that cultural differences strongly account for knowledge-related obstacles, namely knowledge leakage and insufficient knowledge sharing. Contrary to conventional wisdom, however, widespread cultural arguments such as Confucianism or collectivism hardly apply to Chinese employees’ handling of knowledge. In fact, more subtle cultural logics are relevant in daily work, which are connected to the perceived stability of the enterprise itself. But these usually go unnoticed. Thus, rather than being distracted by a national “Chinese culture”, managers can take real action to solve knowledge conflicts in their particular enterprise.
