Book excerpt: Excerpt from China, Japan and Korea Remembering the ancestry and genesis of Young personally acquainted with many of its leading spirits, having followed its operations and activities in every province from the beginning of the present revolution, I am compelled to the conviction that salva tion from this quarter is impossible, not only because Young China itself is unregenerate and undisciplined, but because its ideals and projects of government involve the creation of a new social and political structure utterly unsuited to the character and traditions of the race; because it is contrary to all experience that a people out Ofi from its deeprooted beliefs and habits Of life Should develop and retain a vigorous national consciousness. Another passage summarised the actual position created by the collapse of the Manchu Government's authority. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of the Far East: Japan, Korea, China In this New Edition, which has been carefully revised throughout, I have corrected a few mistakes that had crept into the first, and have introduced a good deal of additional matter, supplied or suggested by the events of the past year. The Revision Treaty between Great Britain and Japan, and the Treaty of Peace between Japan and China, are printed as appendices; and in a fresh chapter I have endeavoured to sum up the main issues of the recent conflict, and to forecast its bearing upon the Asiatic situation. I should add that the greater part of this chapter was written before the late change of Government in England, and that it has been composed in entire independence of official information or authority. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Americans in Eastern Asia: A Critical Study of the Policy of the United States With Reference to China, Japan and Korea in the 19th Century In the 19th Century the issue in American policy in was not the open door. That was never a question. Real issue was whether the United States should follow an isolated a cooperative policy to make sure of the open door. Isolated policy was essentially belligerent? It inevitably led to a pitting of the United States against not one but all of the powers and against the Asiatic states as well. It was the isolation of 1897 following the wreck of the cooperative policy which forced the United States to retain the Philippines, just as the distrust of British an French designs in the fifties had led to the attempt loyal but misguided Americans to seek the appropri the United States of Formosa. As a matter of American flag did fly over the principal port of the island for a year. Likewise today a wreck of the newly established cooperative policy would in the end lead to belligerency, and very likely to still further acquisitions of territory by the United States. Those who scoff at such a speculation will do well to study the past records. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Asia at the Crossroads: Japan; Korea; China; Philippine Islands Most writers on Far Eastern politics make the mis take of crediting their readers with a profounder knowledge of the subject than they in fact possess. They take too much for granted. They talk in terms of algebra instead of arithmetic. On the assumption that those who read their books already understand the meaning of such phrases as spheres of influence, extraterritoriality, the Shogunate, the Genro, the tuchzms, the Anfu Club, the Consortium, the Gentle men's Agreement, the Twenty-one Demands, they make repeated use of them without pausing long enough to explain precisely what they mean. As a result, the casual reader, who usually has only a vague idea of the sub J ect to start with, either becomes bewildered and gives up in despair, frankly admitting that he does not understand what it is all about, or he forms conclusions which, being based on miscon ceptions, do not agree with the facts. One evening we had quite an unexpected glimpseof the Far East in the form Of a fete in Chinatown. The streets Of the quarter, crowded with Orientals, were brightly lighted and hung with gay flags and banners. The little Chinese girls were adorable with their Shiny braids and daintily colored coats and trousers. The kiddies Of about eight or nine were evidently supposed to be selling confetti to visitors but as a matter Of fact they were Spending most Of their time, boylike, in hurling their wares at the passers-by, though this entailed much ardu ous labor in picking up the scattered bits Of paper and replacing them in the bags in which they were Offered for sale. Keen enjoyment was none the less apparent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth About China and Japan The present volume has been written primarily to allow the ordinary reader to see at a glance what the position really is today in Eastern Asia, and to explain precisely why there should be conflict between China and Japan. The essential point - which the writer first insisted upon at great length in The Fight for the Republic in China - is that a dual policy, one policy for the East for the West; that she uses military power and secret loans to advance the first, and diplomacy and publicity the second and that this intricate matter can be understood only by exploring the history of the remote past and linking it up with what is taking place to-day. The fact that the Imperial Conference, which has just concluded its labours, failed to reach any unanimous conclusions on the subject of Japan gives additional point to the arguments which follow, and demands that the important group of documents in the Appendix - particularly the anglo-japanese Treaty - be studied in the light of this new development. Book excerpt: From the author of The Almost Nearly Perfect People, a lively tour through Japan, Korea, and China, exploring the intertwined cultures and often fraught history of these neighboring countries. There is an ancient Chinese proverb that states, “Two tigers cannot share the same mountain.” However, in East Asia, there are three tigers on that mountain: China, Japan, and Korea, and they have a long history of turmoil and tension with each other. In his latest entertaining and thought provoking narrative travelogue, Michael Booth sets out to discover how deep, really, is the enmity between these three “tiger” nations, and what prevents them from making peace. Currently China’s economic power continues to grow, Japan is becoming more militaristic, and Korea struggles to reconcile its westernized south with the dictatorial Communist north. Booth, long fascinated with the region, travels by car, ferry, train, and foot, experiencing the people and culture of these nations up close. No matter where he goes, the burden of history, and the memory of past atrocities, continues to overshadow present relationships. Ultimately, Booth seeks a way forward for these closely intertwined, neighboring nations. An enlightening, entertaining and sometimes sobering journey through China, Japan, and Korea, Three Tigers, One Mountain is an intimate and in-depth look at some of the world’s most powerful and important countries.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Chinese and Japanese Illustrated Books Exhibited in the King's Library We have no record as to the date when metal type was first used in China, but we find Korean books printed as early as 1317, with movable clay or wooden type, and just a century later, we have a record of a fount of metal type having been cast to print an Epitome of the Eighteen Historical Records of China. As both processes came to Korea from China it is only reasonable to suppose that metal type was used in China a century or more before its adoption in Korea. Considerable doubt exists as to the time when movable type was first introduced into Japan but it is at least certain that after the first invasmn of Korea by the armies of Hideyoshi, in the end of the l6th century, a large quantity of Korean movable type books were brought back by one of his generals.
