Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to Salem sea captains, Gilded Age millionaires, curators on horseback and missionaries gone native, North American museums now possess the greatest collections of Chinese art outside of East Asia itself. How did it happen? The China Collectors is the first full account of a century-long treasure hunt in China from the Opium Wars and the Boxer Rebellion to Mao Zedong's 1949 ascent. The principal gatherers are mostly little known and defy invention. They included "foreign devils" who braved desert sandstorms, bandits and local warlords in acquiring significant works. Adventurous curators like Langdon Warner, a forebear of Indiana Jones, argued that the caves of Dunhuang were already threatened by vandals, thereby justifying the removal of frescoes and sculptures. Other Americans include George Kates, an alumnus of Harvard, Oxford and Hollywood, who fell in love with Ming furniture. The Chinese were divided between dealers who profited from the artworks' removal, and scholars who sought to protect their country's patrimony. Duanfang, the greatest Chinese collector of his era, was beheaded in a coup and his splendid bronzes now adorn major museums. Others in this rich tapestry include Charles Lang Freer, an enlightened Detroit entrepreneur, two generations of Rockefellers, and Avery Brundage, the imperious Olympian, and Arthur Sackler, the grand acquisitor. No less important are two museum directors, Cleveland's Sherman Lee and Kansas City's Laurence Sickman, who challenged the East Coast's hegemony. Shareen Blair Brysac and Karl E. Meyer even-handedly consider whether ancient treasures were looted or salvaged, and whether it was morally acceptable to spirit hitherto inaccessible objects westward, where they could be studied and preserved by trained museum personnel. And how should the US and Canada and their museums respond now that China has the means and will to reclaim its missing patrimony?

The forger having obtained a genuine old piece originally made for ordinary use and therefore very simply decorated, removes the glaze and painting by means of an acid and redecorates it with a much more elaborate subject, richly coloured and heavily gilded, and then reglazes the freshly painted sur face. This method skilfully carried out is much more difficult to detect, for the piece is a genuine old specimen so far as the paste and mark are concerned; if, however, the suspected surface is held at certain angles to the light, the junction of the old and new glaze is plainly discernible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States and China: An Address Before the Congregational Club of Brooklyn These gentlemen proceeded to make a treaty with China that practically superseded the Burlingame treaty, and provided that the Government of the United States, when and to such extent as it should think desirable, might enact laws to restrict immigration for a period of ten years. Perhaps it ought to be stated, although it bears an unpleasant significance, that when members of the Chinese Foreign Office, at the beginning of these negotiations, asked what was unsatisfactory in the agreements made by them with Mr. Seward, the answer was given that Mr. Seward had no authority to advance his proposals. We must presume, although it puts some strain upon us, that the member of the Commission who made this re spouse had not taken the trouble to read the in struction given to me by the State Department, that at the moment was on file in the Legation archives. C., And a Complete Checking List of Known Examples of Anglo The man who will tell the story of a race, a nation, or a period according to the clothing, dwellings, utensils, and everyday art of it will be, vow, the only true historian of them all, and vividly in his pages the age and people shall live again, though wars and dynasties and that elaborate comedy called politics be but the edges and binding of the book. So let us glorify our hobby, Hobbinal my friend. Is it not part of the true stuff of history? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chinese Digest, 1936, Vol. 2 Many business enterprises peculiarly typical of the Chinese in America origin ated in these colonial days on the Pacific Coast. Among them are the art goods bazaars and the laundries. The former grew out of the introduction of small Chinese curios and art trinkets to San Francisco housewives by Chinese farmers who peddled their farm produce from door to 'door. The subsequent demand for Chinese art_ goods for home decora tion and for gifts led to the opening of bazaars in all Chinese communities.
