Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Far East This work owes its origin to the suggestion of Mr. Mackinder and its completion to his encouragement. The author, not being a Geographer or Geologist by profession, as are the distinguished writers of the Geographical series with whom he has the honour to be associated, undertook the task with much diffidence: he did so, however, in the hope that his long personal acquaintance with the bulk of the countries described would make amends for his lack of expert knowledge; and that the power, acquired by a life-long residence in the East, of imparting a 'local atmosphere' to his descriptions would atone for the many deficiencies which he is the first to recognize. The book has been written literally 'in the intervals of business' and that of an absorbing character: but this business has necessitated extended travel in China and the neighbouring countries, and so facilitated the accumulation of the needful knowledge of the regions described. The first of such journeys was made in the year i860, at the time that Shanghai was invested by the Taipings; and led from Ningpo up the Tsien-tang river through Nganhui, and so by way of the famous potteries of Kingtehchen down the Poyang lake to Kiukiang - the whole country traversed being the scene of the great struggle then going on between the forces of Hung-hsu-chuen and the Imperialists; a long journey which his acquaintance with the language, and the prestige that in those days surrounded the Englishman in China, enabled him to accomplish in safety. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of the Far East: Japan, Korea, China In this New Edition, which has been carefully revised throughout, I have corrected a few mistakes that had crept into the first, and have introduced a good deal of additional matter, supplied or suggested by the events of the past year. The Revision Treaty between Great Britain and Japan, and the Treaty of Peace between Japan and China, are printed as appendices; and in a fresh chapter I have endeavoured to sum up the main issues of the recent conflict, and to forecast its bearing upon the Asiatic situation. I should add that the greater part of this chapter was written before the late change of Government in England, and that it has been composed in entire independence of official information or authority. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Waifs and Strays From the Far East: Being a Series of Disconnected Essays on Matters Relating to China The following chapters are intended for English readers whose knowledge of Chinese matters bears an inverse ratio to the interest they take in the subject. No claim is made to origina lity or profound research. But at a time when all questions re lating to China have, or should have, some attraction for those who have never visited that country, it may be permitted to an obscure writer to add his quota, however humble, to the stock of general information; and the present volume will, it is hoped, shed some additional light upon certain points which have not, hitherto, been brought prominently before the reading public. In such a work, there cannot but be many shortcomings but its aim is, as far as possible, to combine an unavoidable superficiality with lucidity and distinctness, and its best apo logy is to be found in the Chinese motto upon the cover. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Far East, Vol. 1 of 2: A Study of Japan and of Her Colonial Possessions, of China and Manchuria and of the Political Questions of Eastern Asia and the Pacific The aim of the author in writing this book has been to present an impartial account of the peoples of the Far East, their social and political problems, and their activities generally. More space has been devoted to Japan than to any other nation for the reason that she is the first Oriental country within modern history to be accorded a place of front rank among the Powers of the world, a circumstance which, coupled with the great events that have attended her rise to prestige, has exercised a dominating influence in shaping destiny over regions so vast as to permit only of the broad designation Eastern Asia. Wherever desirable it has been my endeavour to attempt correction of the mistaken notions so widely held concerning the policy of Japan and the character of her people. Hitherto the critics of our allies have been met with the charge of failure to substantiate their statements. Consequently I have taken special pains to produce chapter and verse for all that is written, a course.which has involved quoting from many eminent authorities on the country whose work is acknowledged in succeeding pages whenever occasion arises, and to whom I am naturally indebted. The Russo-Japanese War did not arrest the rapid march of events in the Far East; it merely closed one page of eventful history to open another destined to be a record of transition and turmoil no less important than that which it succeeded. To illustrate the truth of this statement it is enough to say that since the title, "Empires of the Far East," was chosen, two ancient dynasties have tottered to their doom - that of Korea, abolished at the bidding of Japan; that of China, swept away by the forces of violent revolution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From the Far East: Notes of a Visit to China, Korea and Japan, 1915-1916 Finland and her Harvard passengers, owing to bad Slides in the Culebra Cut which held her up for over four days. One evening we had quite an unexpected glimpseof the Far East in the form Of a fete in Chinatown. The streets Of the quarter, crowded with Orientals, were brightly lighted and hung with gay flags and banners. The little Chinese girls were adorable with their Shiny braids and daintily colored coats and trousers. The kiddies Of about eight or nine were evidently supposed to be selling confetti to visitors but as a matter Of fact they were Spending most Of their time, boylike, in hurling their wares at the passers-by, though this entailed much ardu ous labor in picking up the scattered bits Of paper and replacing them in the bags in which they were Offered for sale. Keen enjoyment was none the less apparent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Europe and the Far East, 1506-1912 The aim of this series is to sketch the history of Modem Europe with that of its chief colonies and conquests from about the end of the fifteenth century down to the present time. In one or two cases the story commences at an earlier date: in the case of the colonies it generally begins later. The histories of the different countries are described, as a rule, separately; for it is believed that, except in epochs like that of the French Revolution and Napoleon, the connection of events will thus be better understood and the continuity of historical development more clearly displayed. The series is intended for the use of all persons anxious to understand the nature of existing political conditions. The roots of the present lie deep in the past; and the real significance of contemporary events cannot be grasped unless the historical causes which have led to them are known. The plan adopted makes it possible to treat the history of the last four centuries in considerable detail, and to embody the most important results of modern research. It is hoped therefore that the series will be useful not only to beginners but to students who have already acquired some general knowledge of European History. For those who wish to carry their studies further, the bibliography appended to each volume will act as a guide to original sources of information and works more detailed and authoritative. Considerable attention is paid to political geography; and each volume is furnished with such maps and plans as may be requisite for the illustration of the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Far East Unveiled: An Inner History of Events in Japan and China, in the Year, 1916 IN April 1916, the Taiyo, the leading monthly magazine in Japan, published an article by J. W. Robertson Scott, who subsequently brought out an expansion of it in pamphlet form. From more than one standpoint it was one of the sanest, soundest, most temperate and most friendly mes sages to the Japanese, from a man who was frankly fond of Japan and the Japanese people, that has ever been written. One chapter contained the following: Experience of the past few years has shown that the best friends of Japan are not those who speak only smooth things to her. Those are her friends who tell her that Japan is now at the part ing of the ways. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters Far East The letters here republished consist of contributions written for the Westminster Gazette during a brief visit to China and Japan in the summer and autumn of 1906, together with some additions. I had travelled before in Kashgaria and the frontier pro vinces of China, reaching them by crossing Asia, but this was my first visit to the coast and the better known provinces of the empire. The main object of my journey was to obtain some practical know ledge of the languages and creeds of the Far East, and, in particular, to study the curious development which Buddhism has undergone in those countries for it is difficult to form a correct and comprehensive idea of the part which this religion has played in the world by the mere study of Sanskrit and Pali litera ture. I trust that I may some day be able to publish the result of these and other investigations in a con nected form.
