Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whatever happened to the old-fashioned children's games and songs? Old favorites like Kick the Can, Fox and Geese, and Red Rover encouraged camaraderie, physical activity, coordination and social interaction--as electronic and computer games never can. Family and campfire singalongs helped preserve the folksong and storytelling tradition while instilling in children a sense of community and a confidence in their musical capability. Writer and poet Sharon O'Bryan has gathered a collection of the old games and songs. She brings the old days back to life with instructions for outdoor games like King of the Mountain; car games like Graveyard; card games including Old Maid; and favorite party games such as Blind Man's Bluff. Lyrics and music to singing games and campfire songs are added to this collection to offer old style amusement for every child and occasion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Song Play Book: Singing Games for Children These fifty song-plays have been chosen from a great number because of their adaptability to class-room and playground conditions; they also afford a large amount of vigorous exercise in proportion to the small amount of singing demanded. London Bridge and games of similar type, though favorites with the children, have been purposely omitted since they are games in which the amount of singing and exercise is not proportionate. Download or read book Children's Singing Games (Classic Reprint) written by Alice Bertha Gomme and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Children's Singing Games These singing games have been preserved by oral tradition over such a long period Of time that they must contain something which is peculiarly attractive to Children. Their value has not, perhaps, always been appreciated by adults, although Of recent years many educationists have testified to the worth of the singing game as a factor in the education Of the young. Under the guise Of amusement, of a kind that children dearly love, these games bring into play many of those mental and physical activities which it is the especial function of education to develop. They stimulate the dramatic and mimetic faculties, feed the imagination, exercise the voice and limbs, teach discipline and restraint, and inculcate lessons in courtesy and good manners. In the early stages of musical education they are especially helpful. Distinct utterance of the words is imperative - otherwise the singing game is simply meaningless - and Clear enunciation is the basis of all good singing. Rhythm, too, can be most easily taught when, as in these singing games, tune is closely associated with physical movement. The unpretentious little melodies, moreover, are pure and wholesome and serve their purpose with a simple directness which is most convincing, while they are, of course, well adapted to the needs of immature voices.
