Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor and Companion When the Editor of this Magazine was a little boy, he used to get halfpence given him by his friends; most of these he invested in such small books as he could get, and the rest in candies. The books were, he is ashamed to say, such as Jack the Giant Killer, Mother Hubbard, Goodie two-shoes, and the like. The candies were better than the books; and he is not sure but it would have been wiser to have spent all his halfpence on candies, and let the books alone. But if the candies were sweet the books made him wonder, and that was some gain to a child; for wonder is the opening of the eyes to outward things, and without it there can be little food for the imagination or little motive to inquiry. He believed in these books firmly, and hid his head under the blankets every night, for fear of the monsters and evil Spirits of which they informed him. This was wrong; but what was he to do? There were no other or better children's books to be had in those days, and they could only read such books, or none. Drop him; when, biting away the precious mouthful, he left the little sufferer with his thigh half severed; but happily the bone was not broken. Book excerpt: Some of the most innovative and spell-binding literature has been written for young people, but only recently has academic study embraced its range and complexity. This Companion offers a state-of-the-subject survey of English-language children's literature from the seventeenth century to the present. With discussions ranging from eighteenth-century moral tales to modern fantasies by J. K. Rowling and Philip Pullman, the Companion illuminates acknowledged classics and many more neglected works. Its unique structure means that equal consideration can be given to both texts and contexts. Some chapters analyse key themes and major genres, including humour, poetry, school stories, and picture books. Others explore the sociological dimensions of children's literature and the impact of publishing practices. Written by leading scholars from around the world, this Companion will be essential reading for all students and scholars of children's literature, offering original readings and new research that reflects the latest developments in the field.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selection From the Youth's Companion for Supplementary Reading: A Book of Histories When I first remember my father his hair was already gray, and its white, close-curling rings lay upon the high collar of his blue navy coat. His bright blue eyes expressed sincerity and courage, and the smile upon his face emboldened his children to climb upon his knees, and make the most of his rare periods of leave from his ship. We found in him our hero and our delight, and often begged him to tell us stories of what he had done and seen. I had a special liking for the adventure which I am going to relate, and I shall tell the story with as strict an adherence to the truth as I can attain to, with only the memory of years long past to rely upon. It was but briefly told me then, for if I asked my father for an enlargement of the story, with details which only he could give, he would put me down from his knee, saying: Yes, yes, Puss, it is all true, but enough has been made of that. No decent lad could have done less. The boyhood of my father had been a peculiar one. He inherited the qualities of brave Scotch ancestors, who had lost all in their adherence to Bonnie Prince Charlie. At fifteen years of age he obtained a warrant as midshipman in the navy, and at once had opportunity, in the concluding events of the War of 1812, to show his boyish mettle. After peace had been concluded with Great Britain, there came the expeditions against the pirates of the Gulf of Mexico for which the famous mosquito fleet, under Commodore Patterson, was fitted out. Chief and most troublesome of the pirate bands was that over which the Lafitte brothers ruled. Through the skill and audacity of Jean Lafitte most of the mischief was accomplished. Almost all intercourse with the South and the Gulf was then carried on by water. Beside merchandise and passengers. The day which returned him to his mother earth was Witness to the birth of Mary and to the death of her mother. But an all-wise Providence, Who deprived her of both her parents, watched overherinfancy, and protected her from harm. Nothing, indeed, is more certain than that God will provide for the children of the virtuous with a shepherd's care he will feed them and lead them through the rugged aths of life. The parents of our Little glnglish Girl, lived and died like Christians; they laboured to humble their minds and to teach themselves perfect resignation to the will of' heaven they were particu larly just in all their dealings, and so far as their circumstances allowed, were humane and charitable by friendship and affection they were followed to their graves, and their worth will, I think, be long remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing them. Among the friends of Ca tain and Mrs. Auburn, was an amiab e gentle man of the name of' Arnold, who as soon as the eyes of Mrs. Auburn were closed iii death, received the orphan Mary to his own habitation. The busi ness that had occasioned Mr. Arnold to Visit a foreign country was at this time concluded, and being ready to sail for Europe, he was resolved to make the infant Mary the'companion of his.
