Book excerpt: Parents have the legal responsibility to protect and care for their children. However, recent media reports have illuminated a practice involving unregulated custody transfers of adopted children. Commonly referred to as "rehoming," this practice involves parents who turn to the internet or other unregulated networks to find a new home for their child. Media reports found instances in which adopted children were placed in dangerous situations where they were harmed by the adults who received them. This report examines (1) the reasons adoptive families consider unregulated child custody transfers, and services that exist to support these families before they take such an action; (2) what is known about the prevalence of these transfers; and (3) actions selected states and federal agencies have taken to address such transfers. The book “Unregulated Custody Transfer of Adopted Children’ is a thought-provoking and an eye-opening book that uncovers the gray zone of adoption. The book talks about the often-overlooked issue of the terrifying reality of national and international adoption. Through legal analysis and accompanying story this book sheds light on the heart-wrenching reality of children who have been rehomed. It delves into the lives of adoptive families who find themselves overwhelmed and unable to care for their adopted children, leading to a black market of custody transfer where vulnerable children are given away with one click and with just one piece of paper to strangers. This book is a must-read for as it highlights the urgent need for increased regulation and oversight to protect the well-being of children in need of safe and loving homes. Particular attention is given to the international adoption and the countries such as Russia and Ukraine. The author has played close attention to the laws and regulations in the above mentioned countries by first hand translation and research, in order to give a deeper insights into the heartbreaking reality of unregulated custody transfer of adopted children. The book provides helpful insights for lawmakers, legal practitioners, scholars, child care professionals, international law scholars and students interested in human rights law, adoption law, and child protection.

Book excerpt: "An extremely useful parenting handbook... truly outstanding ... strongly recommended." --Library Journal (starred review) "A tremendous resource for parents and professionals alike." --Thomas Atwood, president and CEO, National Council for Adoption The adoption of a child is always a joyous moment in the life of a family. Some adoptions, though, present unique challenges. Welcoming these children into your family--and addressing their special needs--requires care, consideration, and compassion. Written by two research psychologists specializing in adoption and attachment, The Connected Child will help you: Build bonds of affection and trust with your adopted child Effectively deal with any learning or behavioral disorders Discipline your child with love without making him or her feel threatened "A must-read not only for adoptive parents, but for all families striving to correct and connect with their children." --Carol S. Kranowitz, author of The Out-of-Sync Child "Drs. Purvis and Cross have thrown a life preserver not only to those just entering uncharted waters, but also to those struggling to stay afloat." --Kathleen E. Morris, editor of S. I. Focus magazine "Truly an exceptional, innovative work . . . compassionate, accessible, and founded on a breadth of scientific knowledge and clinical expertise." --Susan Livingston Smith, program director,Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute "The Connected Child is the literary equivalent of an airline oxygen mask and instructions: place the mask over your own face first, then over the nose of your child. This book first assists the parent, saying, in effect, 'Calm down, you're not the first mom or dad in the world to face this hurdle, breathe deeply, then follow these simple steps.' The sense of not facing these issues alone--the relief that your child's behavior is not off the charts--is hugely comforting. Other children have behaved this way; other parents have responded thusly; welcome to the community of therapeutic and joyful adoptive families." --Melissa Fay Greene, author of There is No Me Without You: One Woman's Odyssey to Rescue Africa's Children

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which updates and expands the third edition published by Springer in 2015, explains, compares and evaluates the social and legal functions of adoption within a range of selected jurisdictions and on an international basis. From the standpoint of the development of adoption in England & Wales, and the changes currently taking place there, it considers the process as it has evolved in other countries. It also identifies themes of commonality and difference in the experience of adoption in a common law context, comparing and contrasting this with the experience under civil law and in Islamic countries and with that of indigenous people. This book includes new chapters examining adoption in Russia, Korea and Romania. Further, it uses the international conventions and the associated ECtHR case law to benchmark developments in national law, policy and practice and to facilitate a cross-cultural comparative analysis.
