Book Synopsis Child Poverty and Social Protection in Central and Western Africa by : Gustave Nébié
Download or read book Child Poverty and Social Protection in Central and Western Africa written by Gustave Nébié and published by Ibidem Press. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Livingstone declaration, and the UN Social Protection Floor, this book deals jointly with multidimensional child poverty and social protection in Central and Western Africa. It focuses both on extent and types of social protection coverage and assesses various child poverty trends in the region. More importantly, it looks at social protection to prevent and address the consequences of child poverty. Child poverty is distinct, conceptually, and different, quantitatively, from adult poverty. It requires its own independent measurement--otherwise half of the population in developing countries may be unaccounted for when assessing poverty reduction. This book posits that child poverty should be measured based on constitutive rights of poverty, using a multidimensional approach. The argument is supported by chapters actually applying and expanding this approach. In addition, the case is made that the underlying drivers of child poverty are inequality, lack of access to basic social services, and the presence of families without any type of social protection. As a result, the case for social protection in contributing to reduce and eliminate child protection and its consequences is made. Poverty reduction has been high on the international agenda since the start of the millennium. First as part of the MDGs and now included in the SDGs. However, in spite of a decline in the incidence of child poverty, the number of poor children is harder to reduce due to population dynamics. As a result, concomitant problems such as the increasing number of child brides, unregulated/dangerous migration, unabated child trafficking, etc. remain intractable. Understanding the root causes of child poverty and its characteristics in Central and Western Africa is fundamental to designing innovative ways to address it. It is also important to map the interventions, describe the practices, appreciate the challenges, recognize the limitations, and highlight the contributions of social protection and its role in dealing with child poverty. No practical policy recommendations can be devised without this knowledge.

Book Synopsis Reducing Child Malnutrition in Tanzania by : Harold Alderman
Download or read book Reducing Child Malnutrition in Tanzania written by Harold Alderman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malnutrition is associated with an inadequate diet, poor health and sanitation services, and insufficient care for young children. A combination of income growth and nutrition interventions are therefore suggested to adequately tackle this issue, yet evidence to support this claim is often not available, especially for African settings. The authors evaluate the joint contribution of income growth and nutrition interventions toward the reduction of malnutrition. Using a four-round panel data set from northwestern Tanzania they estimate the determinants of a child's nutritional status, including household income and the presence of nutrition interventions in the community. The results show that better nutrition is associated with higher income, and that nutrition interventions have a substantial beneficial effect. Policy simulations make clear that if one intends to halve malnutrition rates by 2015 (the Millennium Development Goals objective), income growth will have to be complemented by large-scale program interventions.

Book Synopsis Hunger and Shame by : Mary Theresa Howard
Download or read book Hunger and Shame written by Mary Theresa Howard and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hunger and Shame" is a passionate account of child malnutrition in a relatively wealthy populace, the Chagga in Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Views of family members, health workers and government officials provide insights into the complex of ideas, institutions and human fallibility that sustain the shame of malnutrition in the mountains. Discussing the moral and practical dilemmas posed by the presence of malnourished children in the community, the authors explore the shame associated with child hunger in relation to social organization, colonial history and the global economy. Their discussions challenge the reader to ask fundamental questions concerning ethics, the politics of poverty and shame and social relations.

Book Synopsis Urban Life and Street Children's Health by : Joe Lugalla
Download or read book Urban Life and Street Children's Health written by Joe Lugalla and published by Lit Verlag. This book was released on 2003 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of this book examine the dynamics of urban life and street children's health in the era of globalization and structural adjustments in Tanzania. They discuss the factors that push children out of their homes, how the children survive in streets, the hardships and violence they endure and how this affects their health. They argue that the impact of the legacy of colonial policies and some post-colonial development policies, the negative consequences of uncontrolled process of globalization, the impact of structural adjustments and the HIV/AIDS epidemic are simultaneously intensifying the situation of poverty in Tanzania. These processes are not only destroying families and communities that have for many years acted as safety nets for children in need, but are also manufacturing poor, helpless and powerless children most of whom resort to street life.
Book Synopsis Adjustment and Poverty in Tanzania by : Joe Lugalla
Download or read book Adjustment and Poverty in Tanzania written by Joe Lugalla and published by Lit Verlag. This book was released on 1995 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, author Joe Lugalla looks at the relationship between adjustment policies and poverty in Tanzania. He understands Tanzanian poverty in the context of dominant social relations of inequality and not in terms of poverty lines. Lugalla's main argument is that adjustment policies are intensifying these relations in Tanzania rather than reducing or eliminating them. He concludes that adjustment policies are not able to solve but create and even intensify poverty in Tanzania.
