Book excerpt: A Child of the Jago recounts the brief life of Dicky Perrott, a child growing up in the "Old Jago", a fictionalization of the Old Nichol, a slum located between Shoreditch High Street and Bethnal Green Road in the East End of London. The Jago is a London slum where crime and violence are the only way of life, and from which there is no escape for the inhabitants. At the start of the novel Dicky Perrott is about 8 years old, undernourished and roaming the streets, forced to do whatever it takes in order to survive. Dicky's affectionate nature and willingness to work provides a glimmer of hope that he can escape from the corruption of the Jago, but this hope is cynically thwarted by the avaricious Weech. The criminalizing of innocence in an environment of poverty and crime echoes the predicament of Oliver Twist. Arthur Morrison (1863-1945) was an English writer and journalist known for his realistic novels and stories about working-class life in London's East End, A Child of the Jago being the best known. Morrison is also known for his detective stories, featuring the detective Martin Hewitt, low-key, realistic, lower class answer to Sherlock Holmes. Martin Hewitt stories are similar in style to those of Conan Doyle, cleverly plotted and very amusing, while the character himself is a bit less arrogant and a bit more charming than Holmes.

Even by 19th-century standards, it was a horrible place and was in the process of being cleared when he wrote the book. So the area is real but the characters are not. In this way, Morrison was more of a realist than Charles Dickens, showing how the environment shaped the lives of the people living there.

Book excerpt: We all make mistakes. Moments that change us and the path we are on irrevocably. For Rachel Allen it was the moment that she let her son's hand slip from hers. For Danny Simpson and Graham Harris it was the moment one of them took it. Seven years ago Danny and Graham were just children themselves, angry, marginalized and unguided. That was, until they committed a crime so heinous that three families were left devastated. They were no longer just boys. They were monsters. Released from juvenile detention, it is time for the boys, now men, to start again; new names, new people. But they can never escape who they are or what they did. And their own families, now notorious; the Allens, destroyed with grief; and the country at large have never been able to forget. They will always be running. They will always be hiding. But are some mistakes too large, the ripples to far reaching, to outrun forever?

Book excerpt: `I particularly enjoyed Judith Roden′s chapter "Young Children Are Natural Scientists" especially her thoughts on children′s drawings, which puncture some popular assumptions′ - Times Educational Supplement, Friday Magazine `This expertly argued and fascinating book seeks to redress the balance; it places the child firmly at the centre of the educational process and examines in detail the many and varied factors (such as health and physical development, play, stress, and early intervention) which affect the way in which the young child learns and develops′ - Who Minds `Tricia David, an internationally recognized expert in early years education, has brought together 11 tutors from Canterbury Christ Church University College to "encourage debate and disagreement".... It has... some absorbing and helpful contributions which both bring forward the debate in early years education and also may cause readers to reappraise their own practice, possibly as a result of disagreeing with one or other contributors′ - International Journal of Early Years Education Young Children Learning brings together current thinking on young children′s learning, with ideas about the curriculum for children aged 0 to eight years old. Areas covered in this book include: play; health and physical development; early intervention; stress; children understanding their worlds; bilingualism; children′s spiritual development; national identity; young children as natural scientists; assessing learning; the needs of parents, children and teachers; and childhood in changing societies. Written by experienced practitioners from the centre for International Studies in early childhood, Young Children Learning shows that in the earliest years of childhood, all children should experience the delight which can be part of effective pedagogy - pedagogy which takes account of the child′s individuality and development, in the context of changing socio-cultural constructions of childhood.
