Book excerpt: Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of fatal unintentional injuries suffered by children between the ages of 4 and 14. Thousands of children are killed or injured in traffic crashes each year. Much has been accomplished during the past 25 years to lower the fatality rate for children and to make travel by motor vehicle safer for them. State legislatures have passed laws and public education campaigns have educated parents about keeping their children safe in motor vehicles, while walking, while riding bicycles, while riding on school buses and as teen drivers. This book provides state legislators and others with general information and policy options concerning children and traffic safety. Each chapter contains background information regarding specific issues and state laws in each area. The policy issues discussed in the book include occupant protection, school bus safety, pedestrian and bicycle safety, child endangerment and drunk driving, and teen drivers.--Publisher's description.

This book was released on 1984 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report brings together the results of two years of research into the effectiveness of innovative, unconventional, and/or misused child occupant protection systems. Concepts studied and discussed include child restraint securement practices, child restraint orientation relative to the vehicle and the crash, upper torso restraint, and neck and abdominal injury potential. Conclusions and recommendations deal with the dangerous consequences of some installation errors, the performance of seatbelt retractors and tightening devices, CR installation in vans and station wagons, the extended use of rear-facing restraints, the availability and fit of upper torso restraint for children, and the need for further research to guard against possible neck and abdominal injury.
