Book Synopsis The Art of Looking Up by : Catherine McCormack
Download or read book The Art of Looking Up written by Catherine McCormack and published by White Lion Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art of Looking Up surveys spectacular ceilings around the globe that have been graced by the brushes of great artists including Michelangelo, Marc Chagall and Cy Twombly. From the floating women and lotus flowers of the Senso-ji Temple in Japan, to the religious iconography that adorns places of worship from Vienna to Istanbul, all the way to bold displays like the Chihuly glass flora suspended from the lobby of the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas: this book takes you on a tour of the extraordinary artworks that demand an alternative viewpoint. History of art expert Catherine McCormack guides you through the stories behind the artworks – their conception, execution, and the artists that visualised them. In many cases, these artworks also make bold but controlled political, religious or cultural statements, revealing much about the society and times in which they were created. Divided by these social themes into four sections – Religion, Culture, Power and Politics – and pictured from various viewpoints in glorious colour photography, tour the astounding ceilings of these and more remarkable locations: Vatican Palace, Rome, Italy Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, UK Louvre Museum, Paris, France Dali Theatre-Museum, Figueres, Catalonia Museum of the Revolution, Havana, Cuba Capitol Building, Washington, DC, USA Four eight-page foldout sections showcase some of the world's most spectacular ceilings in exquisite detail. First and foremost, this is a visual feast, but also a desirable art book that challenges you to seek out fine art in more unusual places and question the statements they may be making.

Book Synopsis The Autobiography of Foudini M. Cat by : Susan Fromberg Schaeffer
Download or read book The Autobiography of Foudini M. Cat written by Susan Fromberg Schaeffer and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I came into the world like everything else that is born, willy-nilly." So the wise old housecat Foudini begins the delightful story of his life. It is the tale of his orphaned kittenhood; of how he was rescued, cowering and spitting and hissing, from a damp city basement and lured into the lives of the couple he came to call Warm and Pest ("All cats like to make up strange names for things" ). It is the story of how Warm and Pest became "his people" ("Human beings must be excellent mousers; they have such patience" ); of how he learned to tolerate and then to love "his" dog, Sam; and of his adventures at Cold House in the city and Mouse House in the country (he prefers Mouse House, for obvious reasons). With feline equanimity, he tells how he was saved from a racing, swollen river; of how he lost the most unlikely and dearest friend he had; and of how he gained a cat family of his own. And he regales us with news of the ghost cats who visit him in his dreams--the cats of Cleopatra and Freud among them--bringing him their ancient cat wisdom, which Foudini tries, none too successfully at first, to impart to Grace, the sleek and beautiful gray country cat new to the household. As Foudini sees it, Grace is desperately in need of his guidance, but being young and willful, she has other things on her mind . . . Yet even Grace comes to understand that Foudini M. Cat is well worth listening to. Warm and witty--and possessed of a surprisingly sophisticated narrative manner--Foudini is a cat with truly irrepressible, and irresistible, feline flair.

Book Synopsis Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem 2000 by : Dale Chihuly
Download or read book Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem 2000 written by Dale Chihuly and published by Chihuly Workshop. This book was released on 1999 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every time I visited the Citadel, I would imagine what I could do to enhance its glory and bring attention to its soul, says artist Dale Chihuly of his recent project in Jerusalem. In July 1999, Chihuly's grandest and most ambitious undertaking opened at the Citadel, and will remain there for a year. Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem 2000 serves as a focal point for the city's millennium celebration. This volume highlights 14 major installations commissioned by the Tower of David Museum of the History of Jerusalem. The exhibition is made up of more than 10,000 pieces of glass, blown in France, Japan, the Czech Republic, Finland, Israel, and the United States. Within the walls of the Citadel, Chihuly unexpectedly married ancient and modern forms, animating the stone architecture with glass. Mediterranean sunlight illuminates the Blue Tower, the red and yellow Spears, the Moon, and the Crystal Mountain. Chihuly has transformed the Citadel, once a defensive fortress, into a garden of colour and celebration. Commentary by William Warmus.
Download or read book Iconoclast written by Gregory Berns and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2010-03-17 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No organization can survive without iconoclasts -- innovators who single-handedly upturn conventional wisdom and manage to achieve what so many others deem impossible. Though indispensable, true iconoclasts are few and far between. In Iconoclast, neuroscientist Gregory Berns explains why. He explores the constraints the human brain places on innovative thinking, including fear of failure, the urge to conform, and the tendency to interpret sensory information in familiar ways. Through vivid accounts of successful innovators ranging from glass artist Dale Chihuly to physicist Richard Feynman to country/rock trio the Dixie Chicks, Berns reveals the inner workings of the iconoclast's mind with remarkable clarity. Each engaging chapter goes on to describe practical actions we can each take to understand and unleash our own potential to think differently -- such as seeking out new environments, novel experiences, and first-time acquaintances. Packed with engaging stories, science-based insights, potent practices, and examples from a startling array of disciplines, this engaging book will help you understand how iconoclasts think and equip you to begin thinking more like an iconoclast yourself.

Book excerpt: She’s engaged to a man with a promising future. But even as she makes plans to say “I do,” another man is hoping that she won’t…. Maybe that's how she ended up engaged to her mother's chiropractor—a man who looks good on paper, but whose stiff manner and controlling ways leave Lacy cold. When steamy-hot glass artist Daniel Reed rescues Lacy from a dicey situation, she finds herself feeling things for him that she's never felt for another man. But Daniel's reluctance to accept her love—and everything that comes with it—means he's the one who needs an adjustment, before both of their hearts are shattered. FIRE AND GLASS is the fourth book in Linda Seed’s Main Street Merchants series but can be enjoyed as a stand-alone romance.

Book Synopsis Seattle and the Demons of Ambition by : Fred Moody
Download or read book Seattle and the Demons of Ambition written by Fred Moody and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2004-12-08 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1851 as a four-cabin outpost named "New York Pretty-Soon," Seattle has long struggled with an identity crisis. From a nearly lawless port, to a sedate, conventional company town defined by Boeing Aircraft, to an accessible paradise for artists and recovering urbanites, Seattle repeatedly tried and failed to become bigger, wealthier, more like "major league" cities. In the late 1980s, Seattle's time suddenly arrived. Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks, McCaw Cellular/AT&T Wireless, and dozens of local dot.com startups began to drive a booming national economy. Seattle became a city of instant millionaires and brand name shopping, skyscrapers and sports franchises-- the place everyone wanted to visit, topping lists of America's "most desirable" cities. But with such wealth came consequences: overdevelopment, paralyzing traffic, racial and class divisions, and a street population of teenagers discarded by the new culture, whose rage and disaffection fueled the rise of bands such as Nirvana. Striving to reach its ambitions, Seattle seemed to be losing the struggle for its soul. And when it hosted the 1999 World Trade Organization convention, the city's conflicted personalities clashed, as violent riots by residents and a coalition of protestors left the downtown decimated and the nation transfixed by the spectacle of globalization gone wrong. In Seattle and the Demons of Ambition, Fred Moody uses his own background as a native son, along with wide-ranging encounters with others, to trace the growing pains of the city he loves. Profiling Bill Gates and never-quite-champion football coach Chuck Knox, a pair of ambitious entrepreneurs and a homeless sculptor once profiled in the New Yorker, grunge music superstars and the preyed-upon children of the documentary "Streetwise," Moody offers a dramatic, entertaining, and insightful portrait of the city that defined economic and technological change in the America of the 1990s.
