Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Le Chien Du Capitaine When at last he returned to France, he was appointed art critic to one of the Parisian newspapers, le Pays, and literary critic to le Constitutionnel. It was about 1857 that he made a successful venture in imaginative literature, with a short tale, la Bourgeoise de Prague, and a novel, Christine. From this date till the present time, he has produced novels and books of travel, with essays in art criticism in the interval, amounting in all to more than thirty volumes. Scarcely a year has passed which has not seen something new from his pen, and many of his articles in the reviews (such as la Revue contemporaine, l'Illustration, la Revue francaise, and the Athen um) are signed by the nom de plume of Louis de Vermond. The novels of Enault are often made up of French manners and views of life placed in a foreign setting; and it is this exotic quality which gives them one of their characteristics. Another of his peculiarities is to have devoted much of his work in romance to the study of various types of woman. This feature is not absent in the little story that forms part of the present volume; and Madame Pigault is evidently drawn by a man who has some acquaintance with certain mental habits and attitudes which are popularly considered as forming the peculiar inheritance of the fair sex. Le Chien du capitaine (published in 1870) is on the whole, notwithstanding its little tricks of style and occasional verbosity - which place it in striking contrast to la Belle-Nivernaise, for example - a little story well suited to the purposes of the school room. The French is not difficult, the tone is kindly and far removed from the pessimism of most of the stories of the present moment, and there is a strain of humor in it which cannot fail to commend it to the ordinary school boy and girl. Book excerpt: With a long history and deep connection to the Earth’s resources, indigenous peoples have an intimate understanding and ability to observe the impacts linked to climate change. Traditional ecological knowledge and tribal experience play a key role in developing future scientific solutions for adaptation to the impacts. The book explores climate-related issues for indigenous communities in the United States, including loss of traditional knowledge, forests and ecosystems, food security and traditional foods, as well as water, Arctic sea ice loss, permafrost thaw and relocation. The book also highlights how tribal communities and programs are responding to the changing environments. Fifty authors from tribal communities, academia, government agencies and NGOs contributed to the book. Previously published in Climatic Change, Volume 120, Issue 3, 2013.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written with verve and intensity (and a good bit of wordplay), this is the long-awaited study of Flaubert and the modern literary field that constitutes the definitive work on the sociology of art by one of the world’s leading social theorists. Drawing upon the history of literature and art from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, Bourdieu develops an original theory of art conceived as an autonomous value. He argues powerfully against those who refuse to acknowledge the interconnection between art and the structures of social relations within which it is produced and received. As Bourdieu shows, art’s new autonomy is one such structure, which complicates but does not eliminate the interconnection. The literary universe as we know it today took shape in the nineteenth century as a space set apart from the approved academies of the state. No one could any longer dictate what ought to be written or decree the canons of good taste. Recognition and consecration were produced in and through the struggle in which writers, critics, and publishers confronted one another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume appears now finally in English, sixty years after the death of its author, Lucien Tesnière. It has been translated from the French original into German, Spanish, Italian, and Russian, and now at long last into English as well. The volume contains a comprehensive approach to the syntax of natural languages, an approach that is foundational for an entire stream in the modern study of syntax and grammar. This stream is known today as dependency grammar (DG). Drawing examples from dozens of languages, many of which he was proficient in, Tesnière presents insightful analyses of numerous phenomena of syntax. Among the highlights are the concepts of valency and head-initial vs. head-final languages. These concepts are now taken for granted by most modern theories of syntax, even by phrase structure grammars, which represent, in a sense, the opposite sort of approach to syntax from what Tesnière was advocating. Book excerpt: To Myself is the autobiography of the late nineteenth century French artist Odilon Redon. Composed of his personal notes and journals, which he kept for over sixty years, it is a poignant testament of a self-effacing artist whose life was totally devoted to his self-imposed task. His writings consist of his reflections on being an artist, the creative act, and the struggle to achieve the lofty goals to which the truly committed artist aspires.
