Book excerpt: We pull up to her apartment, and Teddy just walks up like he owns the place. I didnt know what I was getting myself into. I knew she told me her ex was there watching the kids so I was hoping nothing would get started. I was a city boy going to a hick town. I had to come though there was something about this women that had me very intrigued. Well she introduced us and her ex kind of had an attitude. I looked at Teddy and said , He better chill the fuck out before he gets knocked the fuck out. I thought he was a joke. I couldnt understand what she had ever seen in him. She was sexy, sweet, crazy, funny and she had a pretty smile that went with her pretty eyes. She was a character I knew that she was a down chic and I could definitely kick it with her for the weekend. She went and took a shower after laying her kids down. Teddy and I kicked it in the kitchen for a bit and we clowned on Will, her ex. Then she walked out of bathroom in a black silk night gown. It wasnt really revealing, but man. Teddy caught the hint and left us alone in her room. I didnt want to just rush in because she may have been all talk, so we started talking. She laid down on the bed, and I propped myself up and we started conversating. We talked about everything. I felt so at ease with her. I mean I didnt feel like I had anything to hide from her at all. I have never felt this comfortable with a person that I just met ever. My heart was shattered and broken and the more we talked and the more I opened up. I could feel my heart melt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil society organizations report that fourteen children disappear every day in Mexico. This book studies the origins of this social phenomenon and its consequences, not only in the emotional sphere, but also in how children have been treated. Focusing on children's special positions within Mexican society rather than criminal acts or the implementation of the law, Sosenski links social and cultural history, the history of crime and fear, the application of justice and the media's role, childhood and the city to paint a multi-dimensional picture of child abduction and its causes. Exploring the social impact of child protection policies and the figure of the robachicos, or child kidnapper, Soneski draws from oral traditions, films and books, songs and plays; all of which embody a culture of fear and danger reported and accentuated by a mass media response. The Fear of Robachicos in Mexico focuses on the role of the media and entertainment in the legitimization of violence toward children and the objectification of their lives, stripping them of their right to freedom and curtailing their autonomy.

They supply endless stories that connect us to a past way of life and to people long gone-people who led ordinary lives, but were full of extraordinary teachings. This is the subject of Sweet Nata, a memoir about familial traditions and the joys and hardships the author experienced in her youth. Set during the 1950s and 1960s in Mora and Corrales, New Mexico, Zamora reveals her interaction with her parents, grandparents, and other extended family members who had the greatest influence on her life. She paints a picture of native New Mexican culture and history for younger generations that will also be nostalgic for older generations. "Zamora offers a unique and authentic perspective on the Hispanic experience in New Mexico. As a memoir, it's a rare glimpse into the daily living of a family and a community."--Ana Baca, author of Mama Fela's Girls (UNM Press)

Matt is six years old when he discovers that he is different from other children and other people. To most, Matt isn't considered a boy at all, but a beast, dirty and disgusting. But to El Patron, lord of a country called Opium, Matt is the guarantee of eternal life. El Patron loves Matt as he loves himself - for Matt is himself. They share the exact same DNA. As Matt struggles to understand his existence and what that existence truly means, he is threatened by a host of sinister and manipulating characters, from El Patron's power-hungry family to the brain-deadened eejits and mindless slaves that toil Opium's poppy fields. Surrounded by a dangerous army of bodyguards, escape is the only chance Matt has to survive. But even escape is no guarantee of freedom . . . because Matt is marked by his difference in ways that he doesn't even suspect. Praise for The House of Scorpions: 'It's a pleasure to read science fiction that's full of warm, strong characters... that doesn't rely on violence as the solution to complex problems of right and wrong. It's a pleasure to read.' Ursula K. LeGuin 'Fabulous' Diana Wynne Jones Also by Nancy Farmer: The Sea of Trolls Land of the Silver Apples The Islands of the Blessed The Lord of Opium
