Book excerpt: This book focuses on one of the key questions in education: What determines a student’s success?Based on twenty years of work on student success, Ray Padilla here presents two related models he has developed that both provide a framework for understanding success and indicate how it can be enhanced and replicated. The research and theory that inform his models are covered in detail.He defines student success simply as progress through a program of study, such that the student and others expect him or her to complete it and be promoted to the next level or graduate. Rather than focusing on the reasons for failure or drop out, his approach focuses on understanding the factors that account for student success and that enable many students, some of them under the most challenging circumstances, to complete all program requirements and graduate. The models provide schools and colleges with an analytical tool to uncover the reasons for student success so that they can develop strategies and practices that will enable more students to emulate their successful peers. They address the characteristics of the students—such as motivation and engagement, the ability to surmount barriers, and persistence—and similarly surface the characteristics of teachers, the educational institution, its resources, and the contexts in which they interact. The process provides administrators with a clear and appropriate strategy for action at the level of each individual unit or subpopulation. Recognizing the need to develop general models of student success that also can be applied locally to specific situations and contexts, the book presents Padilla’s Expertise Model of Student Success (EMSS) that can be applied to general populations, as well as the Local Student Success Model (LSSM) that can be used to drive local institutional strategies to improve student success.The book demonstrates how the models have been applied in settings as diverse as a minority high school, a community college, and an Hispanic Serving Institution, and for such purposes as comparing a high-performing and a non high-performing elementary school. Book excerpt: As the United States and Texas become increasingly dependent on the success of Hispanics in higher education based on degree attainment, decision-makers and policy-makers are looking for strategies for addressing the education attainment needs of the Hispanic population. The purpose of this naturalistic inquiry was to understand 1) the barriers experienced by successful first year (fall to fall) first-time-in-college Hispanic students at a predominately Hispanic student community college on the South Texas/Mexico Border Region, 2) the expertise/knowledge required to successfully overcome these barriers during the first year (fall to fall) in college, and 3) based on these findings, offer suggestions and recommendations for addressing the barriers experienced by Hispanic students enrolled in such community colleges. More specifically, the researcher examined the barriers experienced by students during the first year of college, and based on their experiences, the expertise required to overcome those barriers. The study utilized Padilla's (1991) Student Success Model as the primary theoretical framework for the study. The data analysis led to the identification of six barrier categories, which included: 1) transition from high school to college; 2) personal and family commitments; 3) institutional support; 4) student accountability; 5) instructor issues; and 6) developmental studies/college readiness. In the findings, I include the role of general college knowledge and academic college readiness in students successfully completing the first year (fall to fall) of college. The researcher utilized the results of the study to develop the Community College Student Success Model for First-Time-in-College Students, which was adapted from Padilla (1991, 2001) and Padilla, Trevin̋o, Gonzalez, and Trevin̋o (1996). The researcher recommends utilizing Lynham's (2002) General Method of Theory-Building to move towards the development of a theory for Hispanic student success in predominately Hispanic community colleges. The researcher also recommended the development and implementation of collaborative programs and services between the public school districts and the community college for facilitating the acquisition of general college knowledge by high school students before they graduate from high school.

Expansive research has provided insights into the contextual complexity of community college students served, varying missions of community college, and the pivotal role of engagement in serving underprepared and underserved students. This study utilized semi-structured interviews to gather in-depth data, guided by the psychology contract theory, to better understand how students perceived success, student expectations of the institution facilitating success, and how fulfillment of these expectations influenced student experience and overall success. Data provided insights regarding the varying goals of students and noteworthy impact of relational contexts of institutional agreements and fulfillment of expectations that are influential to success. Students articulated expectations, however, institutional agents' understanding of students and expectations proved to be more influential on success than fulfillment. Student success remains complex and varies based on individual student goals. Students enroll with expectations of agreement with the institution, explicit and implicit, which influences success. The understanding of student needs and expectations and relational aspects of agreement proved most influential in student success.

Researchers have examined factors that affect persistence for traditional-aged students with research focusing on quantitative studies that fail to acknowledge the individual experiences of persistence. Likewise, there is minimal research on Latino/a adult students and their experiences with persistence at community colleges. This dissertation study examined the Latino/a adult student at the community college to gain a better understanding of their lived experiences of persistence. This study took place at an urban, two-year institution in south Texas that has a high number of Hispanic or Latino/a students and a low number of adult students. For this study, I examined the following overarching research question: Looking through the lens of Latino/a adult students, what explains the phenomenon of their persistence at the community college? This study utilized a phenomenological, qualitative approach to explore the overarching question. The study followed a phenomenological methodology in order to focus on the lived experiences of the participants and to further explore the phenomenon of persistence. Two semi-structured interviews and a critical incident reflection were used to gather data from the participants. The themes that emerged from the data analysis were the following: the past will not define my future, moving into higher education, finding my place in higher education, aiming for a better life, what matters to me, making connections, and looking into a mirror. Sub-themes were identified for each of these themes as well, and study findings were interpreted in light of existing research literature and the study's conceptual framework encompassing Schlossberg's Transition Theory (1981) and Yosso's theory of Community Cultural Wealth (2005). The study adds to the body of literature on Latino/a adult students and their persistence and also provides implications for practice for practitioners in the field of higher education.

As this new century begins, however, many Hispanic and Latino students begin college at the community college level, but do not transfer to universities in significant numbers. Embedded in these data are the low numbers of this population who complete baccalaureate studies in science, technologies, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors. As such, this study focuses on a Mexican American segment of the Hispanic/Latino population and examines the factors related to their successful transition through their STEM education in a Southern California community college that is also a Hispanic Serving Institution. Using the Grounded Theory research methodology, the researcher determined that Mexican American students who had persevered into upper level community college STEM courses had engaged in social connections throughout their STEM educational experience. Social connections were in the form of family support, institutional inclusion, peer engagement, and faculty involvement. Central to these connections were demonstrated examples of student validation, institutional involvement, and various forms of academic and social integration.

Although the construct of sense of belonging is complex and multilayered, a consistent theme across the chapters in this book is that the relationship between sense of belonging and intersectionality of identity cannot be ignored, and must be integrated into any approach to fostering belonging.Over the last 10 years, colleges and universities have started grappling with the notion that their approaches to maintaining and increasing student retention, persistence, and graduation rates were no longer working. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the contributing factors that assist African American community college students to persist from remediation, to graduation and transfer to a four-year college or university, and to understand the students' perceptions of their transition experiences better. Schlossberg's (1984, 1995, 2006, 2012) transition theory, self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2002), interactionist theory (Tinto, 1993), and the theory of student involvement (Astin, 1984), provided the theoretical framework for this study. Though degree attainment offers many benefits, many students are challenged to succeed (Griffin, 2006). This research extends to the existing literature and theoretical framework of student persistence. To better understand the experiences of African American students who persisted, the interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was the most suitable methodology for this study. Like phenomenology inquiry, IPA concerns itself with how individuals make sense of their lived experiences. Additionally, IPA involves a detailed examination of each participant's life and experience in the world. To better understand the phenomenon, participants were asked to share experiences, specific events, and practices that supported their transition. According to Smith et al. (2012), the use of a purposive sample of five to six participants is highly recommended. Therefore, the current study included a small but diverse sample of five African American participants, men and women, aged 19-30. The purposive sample in this study included individuals who successfully persisted from remedial education at a Midwest community college, to graduation and transfer to a four-year college or university. Six major findings were identified and included the following: perseverance, patience, pillar, perception, participation, and preparedness (6P's). All of the participants agreed that the 6P's are vital to increasing students' persistence from remediation in community college. The implications of this study are significant, as all students utilized the 6P's through each transition phase of their educational journey. Implications of these findings related to practice, research, leadership, learning, and service were also discussed.
