Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chi Phi Year Book The Omicron Chapter was established twenty years ago by the initiation of the following members of the classes of 1879 and 1880 in the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University: Eugene B. Wilson, John Howard Cromwell, Geo. F. H. Bartlett, Chas. F. Dodd, E. Y. Foote, Jonathan Godfrey, Fred. A. Jones, Arthur Dodge, A. D. Lewis and Joseph B. Bissell. The Chapter owes its origin to the energy of John Howard Cromwell, Eugene B. Wilson and Fred. A. Jones, all of '79 Shef., with the help and at the suggestion, of Lewis V. Snyder, of Rutgers, class of 1878. These four natives of New Jersey determined that the time was ripe for the establishment of a Chapter of the Chi Phi Fraternity at Yale. In the Spring of 1877 these, with others, petitioned for the grant of such chapter. It was over this petition that Xi and Delta took opposite sides, and in the somewhat vigorous struggle which followed, the talent from the college on the Raritan won and the Omicron Chapter was born. We were initiated in the evening of September 11th, 1877, in a hall specially obtained for that purpose, on Chapel Street, near State. This hall was retained by our lodge long enough to initiate several other members of '79 and '80, and two members of '78, and two "specials" were taken in later. The visiting initiating brothers were presided over by a then member, who has since become as false to his fraternity as he has been to his friends, to his college, to another fraternity which he has dishonored by joining, and to the profession which he disgraces by belonging to it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chi Phi Register, 1915: Corrected to April 1, 1915 I am especially glad to be able to call the attention of the members of Chi Phi to the fact that the date of the origin of the Fraternity and the names of the founders have been discovered, and the same appears in the history written by Brother Keith. It is certainly a great source of pleasure that the origin is removed from the mists of antiquity, and that we now have a date to which we can point with certainty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alpha-Phi Chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, an Historical Sketch, 1896-1911: Being a Short Narrative of Kappa Sigma's Career at Bucknell University, Together With an Account of the Said Institution As to the cuts which appear in this book. The cut of Bucknell University was made from the very excellent painting by the New York artist, Richard Rummell, in 1907. The cut of the Phi Epsilon society for the school year 1895-6 is the nearest ap proach to being a picture of the Charter Members of alpha-phi Chapter that exists. No picture of the Charter Members as such was ever taken. In the cut referred to appears a picture of one who never became a Kappa Sigma, although he was one of its most enthusiastic and influential supporters while in College. I refer to George Tilden Ritter, a member of the Class of '98, who entered Bucknell from Lafayette College, where he had been initiated intothe Chi Phi Fraternity. As no Chapter of Chi Phi existed at Bucknell he identified himself with the local society, Phi Epsilon, for which he hoped to secure a Charter from Chi Phi. The opportunity presented itself, however, of getting a Charter from the Kappa Sigma Fraternity without further delay and he with drew from the membership when the new Chapter was founded. He was of very great assistance to Alpha Phi in her early years and is now a successful physi clan in Williamsport, Pa. The cut of the school year l898 9, shows the smallest Chapter alpha-phi ever had. The cuts for the years 1903-4, 1907-8 and 19089 show three of its most representative Chap ters, the last cut also showing the Loving Cup won by the Chapter at the Denver Conclave. The final cut shows the present Chapter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Ohio State University in the Sixties by : William J. Shkurti
Download or read book The Ohio State University in the Sixties written by William J. Shkurti and published by Trillium. This book was released on 2016 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At 5:30 p.m. on May 6, 1970, an embattled Ohio State University President Novice G. Fawcett took the unprecedented step of closing down the university. Despite the presence of more than 1,500 armed highway patrol officers, Ohio National Guardsmen, deputy sheriffs, and Columbus city police, university and state officials feared they could not maintain order in the face of growing student protests. Students, faculty, and staff were ordered to leave; administrative offices, classrooms, and laboratories were closed. The campus was sealed off. Never in the first one hundred years of the university's existence had such a drastic step been necessary. Just a year earlier the campus seemed immune to such disruptions. President Nixon considered it safe enough to plan an address at commencement. Yet a year later the campus erupted into a spasm of violent protest exceeding even that of traditional hot spots like Berkeley and Wisconsin. How could conditions have changed so dramatically in just a few short months? Using contemporary news stories, long overlooked archival materials, and first-person interviews, The Ohio State University in the Sixties explores how these tensions built up over years, why they converged when they did and how they forever changed the university.
