Book excerpt: With more than half the papers new to this book, the fourth edition of Readings in Managerial Psychology represents a substantial revision of this popular text. This edition focuses more than ever on the managing process, both within and between organizations, and such "soft" issues as managing creativity and imagination, managers' values and beliefs, and organizational culture play a larger role than they have before. Readings in Managerial Psychology is designed for managers in business and industry, students of management, public and university administrators, and executives in other organizations. The collection can be used independently or as a companion volume to Harold J. Leavitt and Homa Bahrami's Managerial Psychology: Managing Behavior in Organizations (5th edition, 1988), also published by the University of Chicago Press.

Book excerpt: A father takes a break from every guy's dream gig--covering football (and the odd swimsuit shoot) for Sports Illustrated--to give it a go as Mr. Mom, in this hilarious and heartfelt book After nineteen years as a writer for Sports Illustrated, Austin Murphy should have had it made. Instead, he'd had it--with measuring his life by hotel rooms and Heisman stories, with members of his church assuming that his wife, Laura, was a single mother. With each missed birthday and recital, he became more convinced that he was missing out on his kids' lives. So he decided to trade in his current job for a new one: Laura's. Once an ambitious young journalist, Laura's career had slowed when she went on the mommy track. Now, with a "wife" of her own, she would be able to write full time, while he could be present for more Kodak moments. Alas, the man charged with preparing three nutritious meals a day had never mastered his own outdoor grill. Sublimely ignorant of everything from grocery shopping to house-cleaning to the need to trim his children's nails more than, say, semi-annually, Murphy embarked on his journey much as Shackleton took on the Antarctic: spectacularly ill-equipped to survive it. Between the lice checks, the spring break trip to Las Vegas, and the chairmanship of the Lower Brookside Elementary Variety Show, there were bound to be casualties. Lively, poignant, and laugh-out-loud funny, How Tough Could It Be? is the story of one man's decision to reorder his life around things that really matter and of his adventures (and misadventures) along the way.

Book excerpt: The book is a revealing anti-Vietnam War narrative about the day to day interactions of a group of young combatants coping with the realities of war during redeployment. The lives of these mostly draftees are candidly detailed as the story negotiates the one year tour faced by all who served there. It gives an insight into the Spartan life of the foot soldier and the predicament of the many reluctant warriors who, by 1970, were faced with fighting a war that seemingly no longer needed to be fought. The story deals with a lot of the intimate issues that were both common to all of the troops and relevant to many of the families at home. It is an informative study for the uninitiated and a remembrance for all who were affected that would easily qualify as more than just a journal dealing only with the conflict. There is also a parallel story portraying the tragedy of a mother struggling with the loss of her son to the war. Her ensuing long term grieving process and the effect she had on the survivors of the battle is a centerpiece of the book. The abundance of drugs and the immaturity of the troops facing the disparity of fighting for an unpopular foreign policy created an unusual war effort. With no victory to achieve, there were only lives to be lost as the war dragged on. In the face of the odds stacked against them, they reinvented their purpose for being there and fought for each other creating a bond that testifies to the human spirit and its ability to adapt.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From The New York Times baseball columnist, an enchanting, enthralling history of the national pastime as told through the craft of pitching, based on years of archival research and interviews with more than three hundred people from Hall of Famers to the stars of today. The baseball is an amazing plaything. We can grip it and hold it so many different ways, and even the slightest calibration can turn an ordinary pitch into a weapon to thwart the greatest hitters in the world. Each pitch has its own history, evolving through the decades as the masters pass it down to the next generation. From the earliest days of the game, when Candy Cummings dreamed up the curveball while flinging clamshells on a Brooklyn beach, pitchers have never stopped innovating. In K: A History of Baseball in Ten Pitches, Tyler Kepner traces the colorful stories and fascinating folklore behind the ten major pitches. Each chapter highlights a different pitch, from the blazing fastball to the fluttering knuckleball to the slippery spitball. Infusing every page with infectious passion for the game, Kepner brings readers inside the minds of combatants sixty feet, six inches apart. Filled with priceless insights from many of the best pitchers in baseball history--from Bob Gibson, Steve Carlton, and Nolan Ryan to Greg Maddux, Mariano Rivera, and Clayton Kershaw--K will be the definitive book on pitching and join such works as The Glory of Their Times and Moneyball as a classic of the genre.

And what can he do about it anyway? A throbbing mass of mangled flesh and splintered bone, his body is held together by little more than titanium steel, surgical glue, and the sheer determination to put off the next surgery for as long as he can. But he has to do something. Who else is there? His friend and neighbor across the street, U.S. Senator Juanita Guajardo's son, and the loan officer at the bank are both missing. Wendall left them alone for only a few minutes and now they're gone. Are their stories true, as fantastic as they seem, or is this another distortion created in Wendall's addled mind?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year is 1952, the Korean War is in full swing and the Military draft is taking its toll on America’s youth. If you were between eighteen and twenty-five years of age, you were subject to it. American’s didn’t like the war or the draft and violent protests are common throughout the country. Unfortunately, the targets of the protesters were the innocent victims of the draft — our men in uniform. There is some good news too. Because of wartime spending, the economy is on the rise and jobs are plentiful. The only drawback is to obtain one of these good jobs, your military obligation had to be fulfilled or you couldn’t even fill out an application. I graduated from high school in May and was attempting to get on with my life. At that point in time, I was an only child living at home — catered to and spoiled by doting parents. I was also a loner both in and out of school. I hadn’t participated in any high school activities including sports, and didn’t date or have much of a social life. To me, planning my future meant getting a decent job so I could buy a car. After a fruitless year of job searching, I decided to join the U.S. Air Force for a four year hitch. This isn’t a war story, but rather about some of the more humorous adventures, or should I say, misadventures I experienced while serving my four year hitch. It was during this period that I grew from a naïve boy to a responsible man and father.

Killed in Action—the most dreaded words imaginable for a soldier’s wife. Jess Albert has been living with them for four years, since the death of her husband in Afghanistan. Finding blessed numbness in routine, she doesn’t dare to look ahead, any more than she can bear to look back. Then Tyler Brown, a former special-ops warrior, shows up at her small general store in Minnesota North Woods, jarring her back to life. Jess knows better than to fall in love with another man who places duty to his country before love of his wife—but there’s no denying the longing and the hope for a future that Ty makes her feel. A world away, a lost American soldier clings to life and sanity in a lantern-lit cave. At his side is a dark-haired and dark-eyed woman whose touch is caring, despite the resentment he hears in her voice and sees on her face. But is it honor igniting her compassion for her enemy, or is it something more? A heartwarming, richly emotional, action-packed story about homecomings, The Way Home follows two women on opposite sides of the world. While they both walk a dangerous path between betrayal and honor, they each must find for themselves where to draw the line between duty and love.

Fear is not an indicator that you are doing the wrong things, that you dont have talent, education, or that you are in the wrong place. Many times in life you can be on the right path, pursuing your dreams, but you are scared to death.
