Book Synopsis The Birds of Nottinghamshire by : Nick Crouch
Download or read book The Birds of Nottinghamshire written by Nick Crouch and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last comprehensive review of Nottinghamshire's birds was produced more than four decades ago. Much has changed since then, and a new avifauna is long overdue. This book draws together historic reports from the nineteenth century, records from the files of the county bird club (Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers), and data from national and regional surveys and monitoring programmes. The resulting account presents an overview of the present state of the county's birdlife, set against a context of environmental and climatic change. The gravel pits in the Trent and Idle Valleys form major corridors for birds moving across Britain and Nottinghamshire has attracted more than its share of national rarities. These include Britain's first Egyptian Nightjar and Lesser Yellowlegs in the nineteenth century, Bufflehead, Redhead, Cedar Waxwing and breeding Black-winged Stilts in the twentieth century, and a memorable nesting attempt by European Bee-eaters in 2017. The woods and heaths of Sherwood lying in the middle of the county also provide a haven for an array of iconic species including European Nightjar, Eurasian Woodcock, Honeybuzzard and Hawfinch. This book describes the past and present status of the 334 species that have been recorded in Nottinghamshire up to 2018. Lavishly illustrated with photographs taken within the county, and sketches from the internationally recognised artist Michael Warren, it is intended to be an authoritative reference to the birds of Nottinghamshire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book for 2011 A Globe and Mail Best Books of the Year 2011 Title A Kirkus Reviews Best Nonfiction of 2011 title Virtually all human societies were once organized tribally, yet over time most developed new political institutions which included a central state that could keep the peace and uniform laws that applied to all citizens. Some went on to create governments that were accountable to their constituents. We take these institutions for granted, but they are absent or are unable to perform in many of today’s developing countries—with often disastrous consequences for the rest of the world. Francis Fukuyama, author of the bestselling The End of History and the Last Man and one of our most important political thinkers, provides a sweeping account of how today’s basic political institutions developed. The first of a major two-volume work, The Origins of Political Order begins with politics among our primate ancestors and follows the story through the emergence of tribal societies, the growth of the first modern state in China, the beginning of the rule of law in India and the Middle East, and the development of political accountability in Europe up until the eve of the French Revolution. Drawing on a vast body of knowledge—history, evolutionary biology, archaeology, and economics—Fukuyama has produced a brilliant, provocative work that offers fresh insights on the origins of democratic societies and raises essential questions about the nature of politics and its discontents.

Book Synopsis Safety of historical stone arch bridges by : Dirk Proske
Download or read book Safety of historical stone arch bridges written by Dirk Proske and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-18 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical stone arch bridges are still a major part of the infrastructure in many countries. Although this type of bridge has proven to be an efficient construction type, it often poses the problem of insufficient numerical models of the load bearing behavior. Therefore the book introduces methods to adapt life loads and introduces different types of numerical models of the load resistance respectively. The book continues with the introduction of specific damages and strengthening techniques. The book particularly focuses on the probabilistic safety assessment of historical arch bridges, for which often only limited material and structural data is available.
Book Synopsis A revision of the shore-fly genus Hydrochasma Hendel (Diptera, Ephydridae) by : Wayne N. Mathis
Download or read book A revision of the shore-fly genus Hydrochasma Hendel (Diptera, Ephydridae) written by Wayne N. Mathis and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revision comprehensively documents species of the shore-fly genus Hydrochasma Hendel, which is one of three genera of the shore-fly tribe Discocerinini (subfamily Gymnomyzinae) that occurs exclusively in the New World. The other two genera are Pectinifer Cresson and Facitrichophora Mathis & Zatwarnicki. All known species of Hydrochasma are described with an em-phasis on structures of the male terminalia, which are fully de-scribed and illustrated. In addition, detailed locality data and dis-tribution maps for all species are provided. Among New World genera of Discocerinini, Hydrochasma is perhaps the least well known, as indicated by the dramatic increase in recognized species reported in this revision. Before this revision, Hydrochasma included just seven species, and herein we more than quadruple that number by adding 27 previously undescribed species. These additions bring the total number of congeners to 34. Much of this increase has resulted from a greatly improved sampling of the New World fauna, documenting the ongoing need for field work and better taxon sampling of the earth?s shore-fly fauna. With clarification of species ? how they can be recognized and where they occur ? we hope that additional research on immature stages and other aspects of their natural history and ecol-ogy will be fostered and facilitated.
