Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who or what are cherubim and seraphim? I never gave much thought to the question until I was teaching through the book of Ezekiel. Despite "scholars" defining them as angels, upon further study, it became clear that cherubim and seraphim are anything but angels. This book takes a deep dive into the real nature of these creatures by using all the biblical texts that are applicable to them in both Old and New Testaments. In the pursuit of exegeting the related Scriptures concerning this class of being, I was forced to consider other classes of beings that surround the throne of God together with historical events and places that are linked with the cherubim and seraphim, thus the subtitle to the book: "Heaven's Beasts and Other Assorted Beings, Events, and Places Associated with Them." This is why it was necessary to travel side paths that intersect with these creatures in question. Examples include cherubim and seraphim's role in the throne room of God, the Holy of Holies. Thus, I show their relation to the Ark of the Covenant, the mercy seat, and all creatures that attend God in this holy place. I also speak to the present heaven whom many assume is only spiritual, and yet the Scriptures give us a much different picture. Traveling further down this path, I then address the ultimate kingdom of God the Scriptures call the new heavens and new earth, which is the final destination for all believers in Christ. Upon discovering the real nature of the cherubim and seraphim, I also make the connection to what Ezekiel describes as the spirit of the living beings residing in their wheels and the spirit of earthly animals in which resides the "breath of life," revealing where that animal's spirit goes at death. Yes, this means all animals with the breath of life, including your pets, have a life after death. Is there a "doggie" heaven? This book answers that question and much more while focusing on the life of the cherubim and seraphim and their role in the kingdom of God.

Book excerpt: This study examines the physical form and cultic function of the biblical cherubim. Previous studies of the cherubim have placed too great an emphasis on archaeological and etymological data. This monograph presents a new synthetic study, which prioritises the evidence supplied by the biblical texts. Biblical exegesis, using literary and historical-critical methods, forms the large part of the investigation (Part I). The findings arising from the exegetical discussion provide the basis upon which comparison with etymological and archaeological data is made (Parts II and III). The results suggest that traditions envisaging the cherubim as tutelary winged quadrupeds, with one head and one set of wings, were supplanted by traditions that conceived of them as more enigmatic, obeisant beings. In the portrayal of the cherubim in Ezekiel and Chronicles, we can detect signs of a conceptual shift that prefigures the description of the cherubim in post-biblical texts, such as The Songs of the Sabbath Sacrifice and the Enochic texts.

Recognized today as foundational for the development of the modern short story, Anton Chekhov has transcended Russian literature to become one of the most popular and acclaimed authors in history, in any language. This collection showcases the author’s unique talent for illuminating the intricacies of love and critiquing the values of social and political circles. In “Love,” an aging bachelor meets a beautiful young woman named Sasha, sending passionate letters and soon proposing to her. Despite signs of irreconcilable differences—namely, Sasha’s youthful innocence and childish disposition—he marries her and soon longs for the freedom of single life. “A Country Cottage” follows a young couple on a moonlit stroll in the vicinity of their humble home. Passing the local train station, they playfully discuss their plans for dinner while remarking on the beauty of the landscape. When a train passes through bearing a group of unexpected visitors, however, they find themselves torn between a longing for solitude and their tedious social obligations. In “The Death of a Government Clerk,” a low-level official accidentally sneezes on the person sitting in front of him during a theater performance, only to realize the man is a prominent General. Horrified, the clerk spends the next day attempting to atone for his mistake, only to enrage the man further. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Anton Chekhov’s Love and Other Stories is a classic of Russian literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book excerpt: The remarkable truth about angels, the agents of Heaven, unveiled through Scripture—from the New York Times best-selling author of Everything You Need “Outstanding! As one would expect from David Jeremiah, this book reflects a theologian’s concern, a pastor’s heart, and a Biblicist’s accuracy.”—Dr. Bruce Wilkinson People have long been fascinated by stories of angel sightings, yet many contemporary beliefs about angels are based on misconception and myth rather than solid, biblical truth. As he’s done so brilliantly for decades, respected Bible teacher Dr. David Jeremiah of Turning Point Ministries uses Scripture to unveil the remarkable truth about these agents of heaven and their role in our world and our lives. What are angels? What is their role in God’s plan? Are they present? Do they appear? Do they give us personal insight about our work and our worship? In this broad and thorough survey of Scripture, Dr. Jeremiah clearly and simply separates fact from fiction as it relates to angels. His enlightening findings are supported with illustrations and insights from prominent teachers, such as Billy Graham, Corrie ten Boom, C. S. Lewis, and more. Dr. Jeremiah’s down-to-earth style guides readers around the hype about angels and directly into everything you need to know about the “substance of things unseen!”

Book excerpt: Keel and Uehlinger's unique study brings the massive Palestinian archaeological evidence of 8,500 amulets and inscriptions to bear on these questions. Vindicating the use of symbols and visual remains to investigate ancient religion, the authors employ iconographic evidence from around 1750 B.C.E. through the Persian period (c. 333 B.C.E.) to reconstruct the emergence and development of the Yahweh cult in relation to its immediate neighbors and competitors. They also fully explore whether female characteristics were present in the early Yahweh figure and how they might have evolved in Israelite religion. Keel and Uehlinger's major study marks the maturation of iconographical studies and affords an exciting glimpse into the vibrant religious life of ancient Canaan and Israel.
