The main components of the profile monitor are silicon wafers used to reflect Cherenkov light onto a camera lens system. The design allows for measuring large beam sizes, with large photon yield per beam charge and excellent signal linearity with beam charge. Furthermore, the profile monitor signal is independent of the particle energy for ultrarelativistic particles. Different design and parameter considerations are discussed. A Cherenkov light-based profile monitor has been installed at the FACET User Facility at SLAC. Finally, we report on the measured performance of this profile monitor.

Book excerpt: The research supported by this grant has been focused on the physics relevant to the construction and use of state of the art high current, high brightness, ultra-relativistic electron beams in the energy range from 0.25 GeV to 1.1 GeV, namely, the 1 GeV Duke storage ring system. During this period, the Duke storage ring was commissioned and used for: production of coherent Uv radiation (from the OKA XUV EEL); production 0 spontaneous X-ray radiation: and production of a monochromatic gamma ray beam. A number of very successful theoretical results have been developed and tested. Most objectives specified in the proposal have been achieved. A number of initial objectives for the Duke storage ring have been exceeded during the commissioning of the storage ring and its subsystems. This research has led to the creation of a unique facility capable of producing high brightness electron beams with parameters exceeding initial design goals. These beams have been utilized for ground breaking achievements with the OKA FEL system, including the first and only UV FEL in the US and the first and only monochromatic gamma ray beam with tunable energy.

Book excerpt: This book deals with diffraction radiation, which implies the boundary problems of electromagnetic radiation theory. Diffraction radiation is generated when a charged particle moves near a target edge at a distance ( – Lorentz factor, – wave length). Diffraction radiation of non-relativistic particles is widely used to design intense emitters in the cm wavelength range. Diffraction radiation from relativistic charged particles is important for noninvasive beam diagnostics and design of free electron lasers based on Smith-Purcell radiation which is diffraction radiation from periodic structures. Different analytical models of diffraction radiation and results of recent experimental studies are presented in this book. The book may also serve as guide to classical electrodynamics applications in beam physics and electrodynamics. It can be of great use for young researchers to develop skills and for experienced scientists to obtain new results.

Book excerpt: Soviet research on the propagation of intense relativistic electron beams (IREB) through fairly high-pressure air (pressure range 0.1 to 760 Torr) since the early 1970s has included the study of the plasma channel created by the passage of the electron beam through air, the resistive hose instability and its effect on beam propagation, the effect of self-fields, current enhancement, gas expansion, return currents, inherent beam energy spread, and other factors. This report covers Soviet developments in IREB propagation through air where the beam is not focused by external magnetic fields. The information was obtained from Soviet open-source publications with emphasis given to the last ten years of beam propagation in the Soviet Union. The volume of papers published on this subject in recent years indicates a significant increase in Soviet research in this area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron Beam diagnostics based on imaging techniques using Cherenkov conversion screens and intensified video cameras should be adaptable to the developing high-energy free-electron lasers (FEL) driven by radio frequency powered linear accelerators. The high beam energies (60-150 MeV) and the peak currents (100s of amps) anticipated should also make optical transition radiation intensities sufficient for these techniques. The distinctive features of the two light generation mechanisms will be summarized and a few diagnostic examples will be cited.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation describes advanced techniques of phase space manipulations of the electron beam for improving performance and efficiency of high brightness X-ray light sources based on the free-electron Laser (FEL) and inverse-Compton scattering (ICS) processes. In particular, it first discusses a novel bunch-compression scheme based on a double transverse-to-longitudinal phase-space exchanger - dubbed emittance exchanger (EEX) - separated by a demagnifying transverse-optics system. While the outline of the scheme is quite sophisticated, the basic physics behind it is quite straight-forward. The benefits and disadvantages of these scheme are compared to the conventional approach of compressing a bunch using a magnetic bunch-compression chicane. The second scheme discussed in this dissertation is a novel beamline for imposing and removing the energy slew along the bunch also known as chirping and dechirping the beam in the accelerator community. This scheme consists of transverse deflecting cavities separated by drifts and relies on imposing and removing the transverse-longitudinal correlations on the electron beam. The benefits of this alternative method are compared with standard schemes of chirping and dechirping the beam via an off-crest acceleration. Finally, a novel 6-dimensional theory of the ICS source concludes this dissertation. It derives the photon distribution in 6D phase space describing radiation produced in the process of scattering a laser pulse off a relativistic electron beam as a function of electron distribution in the phase space using the Wigner function formalism. This result opens up the possibility for the optimization of the brightness of an ICS source via imposing transverse-longitudinal correlations on the beam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using correlations at the cathode to tailor a beam's eigen-emittances is a recent concept made useful by the symplectic nature of Hamiltonian systems such as beams in accelerators. While introducing correlations does not change the overall 6-dimensional phase space volume, it can change the partitioning of this volume into the longitudinal and two transverse emittances, which become these eigen-emittances if all the initial correlations are unwound and removed. In principle, this technique can be used to generate beams with highly asymmetric emittances, such as those needed for the next generation of very hard X-ray free-electron lasers. This approach is based on linear correlations, and its applicability will be limited by the magnitude of nonlinear effects in photoinjectors which will lead to mixing in phase space that cannot be unwound downstream. Here, we review the eigen-emittance concept and present a linear eigen-emittance design leading to a highly partitioned, and transverse ultra-bright, electron beam. We also present numerical tools to examine the evolution of the eigen-emittances in realistic accelerator structures and results indicating how much partitioning is practical.

The electron beam is assumed to be bunched as emitted from a travelling wave accelerator, and the emission region is assumed to be finite. Predictions include: emission at harmonics of the bunch rate; coherence of radiation at low frequencies; smearing of the emission angle for finite emission regions; and explicit evaluation of power spectrum in terms of bunch dimensions. The results apply to microwave emission from fast electrons in air or other dielectrics. (Author).
