Book excerpt: Essentials of General Chemistry is the ideal choice for instructors who want a shorter, less expensive core text that still supports a typical one- or two-semester general chemistry course. The text covers the same topical scope as Ebbing/Gammon, General Chemistry, and retains all of its hallmark qualities, including its focus on quantitative problem solving, conceptual understanding, and visualization skills. The new technology program reinforces the approach of the text and provides a complete solution for teaching and learning. The Second Edition retains the hallmark pedagogical features of the text and builds upon its conceptual focus. In addition, figures and interactive animations in the updated art program help students connect molecular-level activity to macro-scale phenomena. The new technology program offers access to tutoring, assessment, and presentation tools through the comprehensive Eduspace Course Management tool?instructors can also choose selected resources for use separately via CD or the Web. Conceptual understanding is further emphasized throughout the Second Edition and its technology program with a separate section of new Conceptual Problems appearing in the printed and computerized Test Bank. Answer Checks follow selected Examples throughout the chapters in the text. They appear after the Solution and are designed to help students evaluate their answer to ensure that it is reasonable. Figures, drawings, and photos in the art program help students connect molecular-level activity to macro-scale phenomena. Animations in the student and instructor technology supplements also enhance students' ability to visualize molecular behavior. Based on instructor feedback, 60?70 percent of the material from Chapter 13, "Materials of Technology" and from Chapter 23, "The Transition Elements and Coordination Compounds" has been divided into two new chapters: Chapter 21, "Chemistry of the Metals" and Chapter 22, "Chemistry of the Nonmetals." A suite of integrated technology tools for students and instructors includes materials (except restricted testing items) that are web accessible, with passwords included in the media guides. In addition, to meet instructor needs, the Media Integration Guide for Instructors includes CDs containing all teaching resources. To ensure that students devote more time to their study of chemistry, key elements of the technology are assignable. In the classroom, instructors can gauge student progress though a Classroom Response System. Online homework within Eduspace?using either end-of-chapter questions or practice exercises based on in-text examples?can be tracked and graded. Even new animations?now with skill-building exercises?can be assigned. To support you and your students as you use our technology, we offer implementation services from our TeamUP support staff, as well as media integration guides for both students and instructors, along with textbook web sites. Eduspace (powered by Blackboard) includes problems that cover all key concepts in the text. Through the Eduspace program, instructors can create their own assignments and post them for students to complete at a designated time. The problems in Eduspace include algorithmic end-of-chapter questions, exercises based on the in-text examples, and Test Bank questions to ensure consistency of level and coverage. Questions can be graded and entered into the online gradebook automatically. Eduspace also includes additional course management and interactive communication tools. WebCT and Blackboard course cartridges include all the material on both the student and instructor web sites, as well as the HM Testing Test Bank.

Book excerpt: Stratospheric processes play a signi?cant role in regulating the weather and c- mate of the Earth system. Solar radiation, which is the primary source of energy for the tropospheric weather systems, is absorbed by ozone when it passes through the stratosphere, thereby modulating the solar-forcing energy reaching into the t- posphere. The concentrations of the radiatively sensitive greenhouse gases present in the lower atmosphere, such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, and ozone, control the radiation balance of the atmosphere by the two-way interaction between the stratosphere and troposphere. The stratosphere is the transition region which interacts with the weather s- tems in the lower atmosphere and the richly ionized upper atmosphere. Therefore, this part of the atmosphere provides a long list of challenging scienti?c problems of basic nature involving its thermal structure, energetics, composition, dynamics, chemistry, and modeling. The lower stratosphere is very much linked dynamically, radiatively, and chemically with the upper troposphere, even though the temperature characteristics of these regions are different. The stratosphere is a region of high stability, rich in ozone and poor in water - por and temperature increases with altitude. The lower stratospheric ozone absorbs the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and protects life on the Earth. On the other hand, the troposphere has high concentrations of water vapor, is low in ozone, and temperature decreases with altitude. The convective activity is more in the troposphere than in the stratosphere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume aims to critically discuss in how far the national orientation of schools and teacher education is appropriate in light of increasing migration and transnationality. The contributions offer ideas from teacher education research and school pedagogical practice in different nation-state contexts such as Austria, Canada, Chile, Greece, Israel, Japan, Switzerland, Turkey, the UK, and the USA. They ask which empirical and theoretical approaches are suitable for describing the phenomena of pedagogical-professional dealings with migration-related and transnational demands on schools. In raising this question, they do not reduce the analytical focus on migrants, their migration paths, actions or attitudes. Instead, the authors analyse the global interconnectedness and entanglements – each embedded in their specific national and global societal power structures and hierarchical relationships – and the country-specific and transnational structures and contextual conditions of schools and teacher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the push and pull of factors contributing to and constraining conversion of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education programs into STEAM (science, technology, engineering, math and arts) education programs. The chapters in this book offer thought-provoking examples, theory, and suggestions about the advantages, methods and challenges involved in making STEM to STEAM conversions, at levels ranging from K12 through graduate university programs. A large driving force for STEM-to-STEAM conversions is the emerging awareness that the scientific workforce finds itself less than ideally prepared when engaging with so-called ‘wicked problems’ – the complex suite of emerging, multifaceted issues such as global climate change, social injustice, and pandemic diseases. Dealing with these issues requires cross-disciplinary expertise and the ability to insert technical and scientific understanding effectively into areas of public planning and policy. The different models and possibilities for STEAM, as the next phase of the STEM revolution, laid out in this book will promote research and further our understanding of STEAM as a forward-thinking approach to education. Gillian Roehrig, STEM Education, University of Minnesota, USA The ideal teacher sees opportunities for integrating ideas from multiple disciplines into every lesson. This book offers many worthwhile suggestions on how to do that deliberately and systematically George DeBoer, Project 2061 of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, USA For the last several years, calls for expanding STEM education have grown, but so too have concerns about technocratic approaches to STEM. This volume challenges the community to consider broader views on STEM by focusing on the place of arts education within this movement. The chapters offer much needed, new perspectives on the (re)integration of the arts and sciences Troy Sadler, School of Education, University of North Carolina, USA
