Book excerpt: This report finds that the UK has an excellent research base but is still failing to maximise its potential by translating research into wealth and health. The road to economic recovery will depend, in part, on exploitation of the UK's research base, which in turn requires efficient translation to generate returns on investments. Some areas of bioengineering, such as stem cells, have clearly benefited from strong Government leadership and support, backed up by generous levels of funding from both the public and private sectors. Others, such as genetically modified (GM) crops, are less well supported and funded. This is curious when GM crops are considered by the Government to be safe and offer potential benefits. GM crops are certainly the poor cousin in the bioengineering family, and we strongly urge the Government to signal its support for GM crops as well as improving the regulatory situation in Europe. Regulation of bioengineering is complex and researchers have found that regulations inhibit research and translation, either because of regulatory complexity (stem cells) or a flawed operation of the regulatory process (GM crops). There are good indications that the UK is learning from past experiences in bioengineering when handling new emerging technologies, such as synthetic biology. The Government and Research Councils have recognised the value of synthetic biology early, and are providing funding. The Committee is also concerned that while research is well funded there is not enough forethought about synthetic biology translation, for example developing DNA synthesis capability, which would provide the UK with an excellent opportunity to get ahead internationally. If this is not addressed, synthetic biology runs the risk of becoming yet another story of the UK failing to capitalise on a strong research base and falling behind internationally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Chemistry: Applied Research and Interactions provides the background needed in biophysics and molecular chemistry and offers a great deal of advanced biophysical knowledge. It emphasizes the growing interrelatedness of molecular chemistry and biochemistry, and acquaints one with experimental methods of both disciplines. This book addresses some of the enormous advances in biochemistry, particularly in the areas of structural biology and bioinformatics, by providing a solid biochemical foundation that is rooted in chemistry. Topics include scientific integrity and ethics in the field; clinical translational research in cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease; emerging drugs to treat neurodegenerative diseases; swine, avian, and human flu; the use of big data in artificial knowledge in the field; bioinformatic insights on molecular chemistry; and much more.

Download or read book Chemistry in the World written by Kirstin Hendrickson and published by Cognella Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry in the World helps students become familiar with the ways in which chemistry is relevant to society and everyday life on personal, local, and global levels. The book presents chemical concepts in the context of their social applications and focuses on those most relevant to our common daily experiences and global challenges. In doing so, it gives students an appreciation for the applicability, visibility, and universality of chemistry, and an understanding of the reciprocal relationship between the science of chemistry and the organism of society. Chemistry in the World addresses aspects of scientific thinking and risk-benefit analysis to introduce students to ways of thinking that are useful and applicable both inside and outside the scientific world. The book features up-to-date national and global government policies and is organized into four main units: "All Around Us and Inside Us," "Community Chemistry," "Personal Chemistry," and "Global Chemistry." Specific topics include the composition of the atmosphere, carbon-based life forms, chemistry of water, acids and bases, pharmaceuticals and poisons, and nuclear chemistry. The third edition includes relevant and updated policies, FDA regulations, dietary recommendations, and global climate treaties. Chemistry in the World is an excellent comprehensive introduction to the subject, but more importantly, the book teaches students that chemistry is more than the stuff of science; it is the stuff of life.

Book Synopsis Making it tangible. Learning outcomes in science education by : Sascha Bernholt
Download or read book Making it tangible. Learning outcomes in science education written by Sascha Bernholt and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the central features in current educational reforms is a focus on learning outcomes. Many countries have established or revised standards to describe what teachers are supposed to teach and students are expected to learn. More recently, the emphasis has shifted to considerations of how standards can be operationalized in order to make the outcomes of educational efforts more tangible. This book is the result of a symposium held in Kiel, that was arranged by two science education groups, one at the IPN (Leibniz-Institute for Science and Mathematics Education at the University of Kiel) in Germany and the other at the University of York, UK. The seminar brought together renowned experts from 12 countries with different notions of the nature and quality of learning outcomes. The aim was to clarify central conceptions and approaches for a better understanding among the international science education community. The book is divided into five parts. In Part A, the organizers set the scene, describing the rationale for arranging the symposium. Part B provides a broad overview about different approaches, challenges, and pitfalls on the road to the clarification of meaningful and fruitful learning outcomes. The set of papers in Part C provides deep insights into different, although comparable approaches which aim to frame, to assess, and to promote learning and learning outcomes in science education. Smaller projects are presented as well as broad, coordinated national programs. The papers in Part D outline the individual historical development from different national perspectives, reflecting the deficits and problems that led to current reforms. Finally, a summary of the organizers analyses the conclusions from different vantage points.
