Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Chemistry for Schools This little book is intended to serve as a brief introductory outline of Physical Chemistry for the use of students who have been through the very elementary courses of descriptive Chemistry and Physics. The subject-matter is given, as far as possible, in the form of concise, direct statements; long detailed explanations, historical introductions and mathematical formulae being avoided as far as possible. It is hoped that by introducing the subject in this way it may be possible to fix the attention and to stimulate interest in the case of many students who, as experience shows, are liable to be scared away from the subject when it is presented in the more elaborate and mathematical form. It will be understood, of course, that in the study of Physical Chemistry many important problems and theories occur which are, perhaps, beyond the capabilities of elementary students. Matters of this kind have been only briefly sketched and are given in sections printed in smaller type, so that they can be used at the discretion of the teacher. The author desires to express his sincere thanks to Mr W. H. Mills, M.A., Ph.D., for his kindness in reading the proof-sheets and in making many useful suggestions; and to Dr Shillington Scales for executing the diagrams. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Chemistry for High Schools The successful study of chemistry necessarily presupposes some knowledge of physics; but, in an elementary work like this, the quantity is very small. Acquaintance with the metric system is taken for granted, and the centigrade thermometer-scale is used throughout the book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School Chemistry: A New Text-Book for High Schools and Academies The chief significance of the foregoing is that, as far as possible, each pupil is to perform the experiments for himself, make his own observations, and draw his own conclusions. This is important, whether some of the experiments have been performed by the instructor before the class or not. In every case there must be care that the conclusions arrived at are founded upon actual facts. See that each pupil has a small note-book, and that he always has it at hand when he is making his experiments. See that the details of all experiments made by him are recorded by him in this book at the time of the experiment, not subsequently. In addition to the description of the Operation, the record should contain an account of all observed phenomena, and the conclusions drawn from them. The ability to observe accurately and completely, and the ability to draw proper conclusions from observed facts, are the two greatest benefits to be derived from the study of general chemistry. Make frequent and careful examinations of the pupil's notes, seeking to lead him to accurate observation, to intelligent discrimination between essential and merely incidental conditions and results of an experiment, to correctness of conclusions, and to precision and concise ness of statement. Do not let your pupils get the idea that they, chemists; do not think that you ought to make chemists' of them. After this course has been completed, a course in some good school of applied science will be needed for the pupil who desires to become a chemist.' The author would be glad to receive suggestions from teachers using this book, or to answer any inquiries they may make. He may be addressed at Cleveland, Ohio. He gratefully acknowledges the aid given him by many. Especial mention is due to Professor Albert W. Smith of the Case School of Applied Science; his work shows on almost every page. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inorganic Chemistry: A Textbook for Schools This book is written by one who has realised this, and who knows how to teach with breadth and without exclusiveness. Its pages give information and provoke curiosity at many points they suggest that there are other realms of knowledge Of a quite different sort. This characteristic, which may offend the purist, seems to me all to the good, and I hope that the work may find its way into the hands of many. To make the experimental method of reaching facts prominent and practicable, not by requiring the student to read the descriptions of large numbers of experiments which he can not make and may never see, but rather by inviting his attention to a few which are within reach, or which may be clearly understood by means of cuts, and then providing an additional number which are easily and cheaply made, and which are to be studied only when they are seen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemistry for Students This little book is intended to supply to Students of Chemistry an outline of the most interesting and useful facts pertaining to the Science, and of the most important ideas which have been got from a study of those facts. The method of exposition differs from that which is adopted in most other treatises of Chemistry; for I describe and compare individual facts, so as to lead the mind of the reader towards general principles, instead of stating the general principles first and then proceeding to illustrate them by details. However, it is thought that so much of interest will be found in these paragraphs that the teacher can easily induce the student to read them even if they are regarded as excess material.
