Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemical Relations of the Human Body With Surrounding Agents: A Lecture Introductory to a Course on Medical Chemistry in the Medical Department of Pennsylvania College, for the Session of 1845-46 These are respectively composed of carbon and oxygen, and of hydro gen and oxygen, so that it is plain that carbon and hydrogen are the elements, which, meeting the inspired oxygen, form new compounds with it within the body, and are conveyed again into the exterior world through the lungs. This carbon and hydrogen of the organic tissue, having been removed by the agency of oxygen, must again be replaced by food containing the same elements. Thus it becomes evident that a large portion of the nutritive substances which we con sume, goes to sustain the process of respiration, and that the amount of such nutrition must be proportioned to that of the oxygen inspired - else the excess of the elements of respiration must produce repletion of the system, or a superabundance of oxygen, a proportionate waste of fibre, and in either case acting injuriously upon the healthy functions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heredity and Human Affairs Genetics stands second to physics as the most fruitful department of science during the last quarter of a century. Physics has given us a new chemistry, a new thermo dynamics, in fact a wholly new philosophy as to the nature of matter. It has made possible such marvellous mechanical inventions as the aeroplane, the cinema, and the radio. The achievements of genetics are not so spectacular, but hardly less broadly constructive. The established facts concerning variation, heredity, and development provide a new orien tation in sociology. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does chocolate taste so good? Why do we seek 'the one'? How do traits such as intelligence, creativity and violence arise and what purpose do they serve? This book links these characteristics to the origins of life, showing that the conditions necessary to bring life into existence echo through our modern day behaviour. The chemistry of the body is not only fascinating but also highly relevant to everyone, since we are all concerned with maximising our health and enjoyment of life. Currently, there are not many popular science books concerned with biochemistry. One reason for this might be the particularly complex nature of the science involved. This book starts with the fundamentals and then works towards a deeper understanding of the chemistry of human nature. Essential reading for anyone with an interest in this science and written at a level accessible to experts and non-experts alike.

Book excerpt: The psychology classic—a detailed study of scientific theories of human nature and the possible ways in which human behavior can be predicted and controlled—from one of the most influential behaviorists of the twentieth century and the author of Walden Two. “This is an important book, exceptionally well written, and logically consistent with the basic premise of the unitary nature of science. Many students of society and culture would take violent issue with most of the things that Skinner has to say, but even those who disagree most will find this a stimulating book.” —Samuel M. Strong, The American Journal of Sociology “This is a remarkable book—remarkable in that it presents a strong, consistent, and all but exhaustive case for a natural science of human behavior…It ought to be…valuable for those whose preferences lie with, as well as those whose preferences stand against, a behavioristic approach to human activity.” —Harry Prosch, Ethics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kass shows how the promise and the peril of our time are inextricably linked with the promise and the peril of modern science. The relation between the pursuit of knowledge and the conduct of life—between science and ethics, each broadly conceived—has in recent years been greatly complicated by developments in the science of life. This book examines the ethical questions involved in prenatal screening, in vitro fertilization, artificial life forms, and medical care, and discusses the role of human beings in nature.
