Book excerpt: It is particularly appropriate that a volume concerned with dye chemistry should be included in the series Topics in Applied Chemistry. The development of the dye industry has been inexorably linked not only with the development of the chemical industry but also with organic chemistry itself since the middle of the last century. The position of dye chemistry at the forefront of chemical 1945 and more markedly so during the last advance has declined somewhat since 15 years, with pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry assuming an increasingly prominent position. Nevertheless, dye production still accounts for a significant portion of the business of most major chemical companies. The field of dye chemistry has stimulated the publication of many books over the years but surprisingly few have concentrated on or even included the practical aspects of dye synthesis and application. Thus, the present volume is designed to fulfill that need and provide the reader with an account of advances in dye chemistry, concentrating on more recent work and giving, in a single volume, synthetic detail and methods of application of the most important classes, information which will be invaluable to both student and research chemist alike.

Book excerpt: The production of textile materials comprises a very large and complex global industry that utilises a diverse range of fibre types and creates a variety of textile products. As the great majority of such products are coloured, predominantly using aqueous dyeing processes, the coloration of textiles is a large-scale global business in which complex procedures are used to apply different types of dye to the various types of textile material. The development of such dyeing processes is the result of substantial research activity, undertaken over many decades, into the physico-chemical aspects of dye adsorption and the establishment of ‘dyeing theory’, which seeks to describe the mechanism by which dyes interact with textile fibres. Physico-Chemical Aspects of Textile Coloration provides a comprehensive treatment of the physical chemistry involved in the dyeing of the major types of natural, man-made and synthetic fibres with the principal types of dye. The book covers: fundamental aspects of the physical and chemical structure of both fibres and dyes, together with the structure and properties of water, in relation to dyeing; dyeing as an area of study as well as the terminology employed in dyeing technology and science; contemporary views of intermolecular forces and the nature of the interactions that can occur between dyes and fibres at a molecular level; fundamental principles involved in dyeing theory, as represented by the thermodynamics and kinetics of dye sorption; detailed accounts of the mechanism of dyeing that applies to cotton (and other cellulosic fibres), polyester, polyamide, wool, polyacrylonitrile and silk fibres; non-aqueous dyeing, as represented by the use of air, organic solvents and supercritical CO2 fluid as alternatives to water as application medium. The up-to-date text is supported by a large number of tables, figures and illustrations as well as footnotes and widespread use of references to published work. The book is essential reading for students, teachers, researchers and professionals involved in textile coloration.

Book excerpt: This book presents a design-driven investigation into smart materials developed by chemists, physicists, materials and chemical engineers, and applied by designers to consumer products. Introducing a class of smart materials, that change colors, the book presents their characteristics, advantages, potentialities and difficulties of applications of this to help understanding what they are, how they work, how they are applied. The books also present a number of case studies: products, projects, concepts and experiments using smart materials, thus mapping out new design territories for these innovative materials. These case studies involve different fields of design, including product, interior, fashion and communication design. Within the context of rising sustainable and human-centered design agendas, the series will demonstrate the role and influence of these new materials and technologies on design, and discuss how they can implement and redefine our objects and spaces to encourage more resilient environments.

Book excerpt: The traditional use of organic colorants is to impart color to a substrate such as textiles, paper, plastics, and leather. However, in the last five years or so organic colorants have become increasingly important in the high technology (hi-tech) industries of electronics and particularly reprographics. In some of these reprographics applications the organic colorant is used in its traditional role of imparting color to a substrate, typically paper or plastic. Examples are dyes for ink-jet printing, thermally transferable dyes for thermal transfer printing, and dyes and pigments for colored toners in photocopiers and laser printers. In other applications it is a special effect of an organic colorant that is utilized, not its color. Examples are electrical effects, such as photoconduction and the electrostatic charging of toners, both of which are essential features for the operation of photocopiers and laser printers, and the selective absorption of infrared radiation, which is utilized in optical data storage. In electronic applications the organic colorant is often employed in a device. Typical examples include liquid crystal dyes, laser dyes, electro chromic dyes, dyes for solar cells, dyes for micro color filters, and dyes for nonlinear optical applications.

Book excerpt: The Chemistry of Synthetic Dyes, Volume IV is a critical assessment of patent literature and scientific journals on the synthesis and applications of synthetic dyes. This volume is composed of seven chapters, and begins with a discussion on the application of dyes in textile fibers and printing, as well as in dyeing industry. A chapter provides a general description of dyeing, other properties, and applications of basic dyes. These topics are followed by a survey of the classification and potential application of cationic dyes. Another chapter focuses on the synthesis and reaction mechanisms of cyanine dyes. The final chapters look into the principles and chemistry of the formation of images by oxidative coupling. These chapters also examine the general laws governing the photochemical processes of dyes and of other organic compounds; the photochemical reactions of dyes in solution; the light-fading of dyed textiles and other dyes substrates; and the effect of spectral sensitization and special photo-reactions of dyes. This book will prove useful to organic chemists and technologists who are concerned with the synthesis of dyes and their applications.

Even though numerous dyes and pigments have been synthesized to date, and a lot of knowledge has been gained regarding their production and properties, scientific research is pushing the boundaries towards novel dyes and pigments for high-tech applications. At the same time, the accumulation of dyes and pigments in natural environments and pollution of water resources due to their massive use are important consequences to consider. New methods for the degradation and removal of dyes and pigments from affected areas are highly sought after. As such, this book examines new trends in smart and functional dyes and pigments and their uses as well as novel treatment approaches to dye and pigment waste.
