Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-Chemical Weed Control is the first book to present an overview of plant crop protection against non-food plants using non-chemical means. Plants growing wild—particularly unwanted plants found in cultivated ground to the exclusion of the desired crop—have been treated with herbicides and chemical treatments in the past. As concern over environmental, food and consumer safety increases, research has turned to alternatives, including the use of cover crops, thermal treatments and biotechnology to reduce and eliminate unwanted plants. This book provides insight into existing and emerging alternative crop protection methods and includes lessons learned from past methodologies. As crop production resources decline while consumer concerns over safety increase, the effective control of weeds is imperative to insure the maximum possible levels of soil, sunlight and nutrients reach the crop plants. Allows reader to identify the most appropriate solution based on their individual use or case Provides researchers, students and growers with current concepts regarding the use of modern, environment-friendly weed control techniques Presents methods of weed management—an important part of integrated weed management in the future Exploits the knowledge gained from past sustainable weed management efforts

This book was released on 2012 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methyl bromide (MeBr), a Class I ozone-depleting substance, has been banned for ordinary agricultural uses. In the absence of an effective MeBr alternative, weed control is a major challenge for commercial tomato and bell pepper production. Field trials were conducted at Fayetteville, AR, to compare allyl isothiocyanate (ITC), metam sodium, and herbicide programs with the standard MeBr application (mixture of MeBr plus chloropicrin at 67% plus 33%, respectively, hereafter referred to as MeBr) for crop injury, weed control, viable yellow nutsedge tubers, and marketable yield in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) mulched tomato and bell pepper production. In addition, herbicide programs were evaluated for cost of production, gross return, net return, and net return relative to MeBr in LDPE-mulched tomato and bell pepper production. Allyl ITC and metam sodium did not injure tomato. Weed control and yield in tomato plots treated with allyl ITC at 750 kg ha -1 or metam sodium at 360 kg ha-1 were comparable to plots treated with MeBr at 390 kg ha-1. Likewise, metam sodium at 360 kg ha-1 and MeBr-treated bell pepper plots were similar for weed control and yield. Tomato or bell pepper injury was ≥13% in PRE-applied imazosulfuron or S-metolachlor plots after POST-applied trifloxysulfuron plus halosulfuron at 0.008 and 0.027 kg ha-1, respectively. Herbicide programs consisting of PRE-applied S-metolachlor followed by (fb) POST-applied trifloxysulfuron plus halosulfuron provided comparable weed control to MeBr in LDPE-mulched tomato and bell pepper. Tomato or bell pepper plots treated with the S-metolachlor-containing herbicide program yielded total marketable fruits equivalent to the plots treated with MeBr. The S-metolachlor herbicide program also provided a net return of 3,758.50 and 9,912.05 dollars ha-1 in tomato and bell pepper production, respectively. Moreover, the S-metolachlor herbicide program added a net return of $173.34 ha -1 relative to net return with MeBr treatment in bell pepper. In conclusion, metam sodium at 360 kg ha-1 or PRE-applied S-metolachlor at 1.6 kg ha-1 fb POST-applied trifloxysulfuron plus halosulfuron at 0.008 and 0.027 kg ha-1 are viable MeBr alternatives for weed control in LDPE-mulched tomato and bell pepper.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Successful vegetable production in a modern competitive market requires an understanding of many more factors than the biology of crops and the production techniques involved. This major new textbook brings the science and practice of vegetable production right up to date by addressing modern culture techniques and the recent challenges of consumer demand facing producers today. It introduces vegetable production from the perspective of producing high quality produce that satisfies the needs of the modern consumer. Beginning with the basics of how vegetables are grown using high and low input methods, including organic and sustainable production techniques, the book goes on to introduce and discuss many topics covered less comprehensively in older texts, including Good Agricultural Practices to improve quality, reduce biological contamination and secure food safety; water management; cropping systems; plasticulture; protected culture and mineral nutrition. Vegetable Production and Practices also introduces the use of molecular biology for genetic improvement of crops. Issues specific to individual vegetable crops are addressed by family, including their diseases, harvesting, quality attributes and other issues of increasing importance to consumers, including the role of vegetables in human health. Professor Gregory E. Welbaum has a long history of teaching successful courses in horticulture at Virginia Tech and other universities in the US and worldwide. Vegetable Production Practices has been specifically designed to accompany courses in vegetable crop production, so is ideally suited to inspire students in crop and horticultural sciences, as well as provide a useful reference for experienced practitioners.
