Book excerpt: It seems that there is no book that treats the measurement of the physical pa rameters of explosives as its only subject, although limited information is avail able in a number of books. Therefore, I have tried to bridge this gap in the lit erature with this book. A large number of various physical parameters have to be determined ex perimentally in order to test or characterise an explosive. Various physical principles have been applied for such measurements. Accordingly, a large number of different experimental methods exist, as well as various testing appa ratuses and procedures. On the other hand, great progress has been made recently in the study of detonation phenomena. New measuring techniques can assess extremely short processes to below nanoseconds scale. They make it possible to determine im portant parameters in detonation physics. I have made a great attempt to cover the available literature data on the subject. Because it would be a highly demanding task to include in a single volume all the methods that are in use by various testing agencies, I have tried to give primarily the principles for determination of individual physical pa rameters of explosives by different measuring methods as well as data treatment procedures.

Book excerpt: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has developed a thermal stability test procedure that is currently being evaluated by the Department of Defense (DOD) Explosives Safety Board as an equivalent alternate test to the DOD Technical Bulletin 700-2 "Thermal Stability Test at 75 degrees Celsius." This procedure will also be submitted for evaluation for acceptance under the similar test specified in the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Tests and Criteria Manual. The LLNL Chemical Reactivity Test (CRT) is significantly more severe than the existing "Thermal Stability Test at 75 C" and is also quantitative in nature. It has been approved by the Department of Energy (DOE) Explosives Safety Committee as an equivalent alternate thermal stability test and has been in use by LLNL for over 30 years. It is currently used by other DOE and DOD organizations as the standard small-scale safety test for determining thermal stability and material compatibility. The LLNL CRT is run on a 0.250 gram sample for 22 hours at 120 degrees Celsius rather than the 50 gram sample for 48 hours at 75 C as required for the Thermal Stability Test. Thus the CRT is a much more severe test since it is run at 120 C rather than 75 C. Simple Arrhenius kinetics predict a material decomposition rate of approximately 25 times greater at 120 C than at 75 C. Any material under test that exhibits gas evolution exceeding 4 cubic centimeters/gram (approximately 0.8 % decomposition) is considered suspect and additional testing and/or evaluation is then performed to determine if the material is thermally unstable. In addition to the CRT being significantly more severe and quantitative, there are significant other advantages for using the CRT.

At its ninth session (7 December 2018), the Committee adopted a set of amendments to the sixth revised edition of the Manual as amended by Amendment 1. This seventh revised edition takes account of these amendments. In addition, noting that the work to facilitate the use of the Manual in the context of the GHS had been completed, the Committee considered that the reference to the "Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods" in the title of the Manual was no longer appropriate, and decided that from now on, the Manual should be entitled "Manual of Tests and Criteria".

Book excerpt: A controlled series of experiments have been performed in an attempt to evaluate the Henkin time-to-explosion test as a reactivity test and a quality assurance tool. This was done by comparing the Henkin results with those obtained with the presently used gas chromatograph chemical reactivity test, Two explosives, PBX 9404 and LX-04-1, were tested with four ''inerts'': sodium chloride, lead powder, Silastic Q-300030 and epoxy 633111. The experimental data from the two tests are given; a method for mathematically reducing the Henkin data is considered. The data from the two tests are not in complete agreement. Both predict that the epoxy is reactive with and that NaCl is unreactive with both explosives. However, the Henkin data indicated reactivity of lead powder and Silastic with LX-04-1; the gas chromatograph did not. For PBX 9404, the Henkin test indicated that the lead was borderline reactive and the Silastic unreactive, while the gas chromatograph predicted the opposite. DTA thermograms are included to help interpret the comparison test results. A section in the appendix is devoted to the experimental problems encountered in getting the Henkin test operational. All raw data generated during that time are included in the appendix. In addition, data obtained subsequently with a fairly wide variety of explosives (and propellants) are given; these indicate the present quality of data.

Each of the methods described is practical, effective and of low cost; and many of the application results are from the author's own laboratory.
