Book excerpt: The problem of calculating the flow behind a normal shock front is discussed. The additional complication of finite reaction rate chemistry has been included. A numerical method and several results of flow across a shock wave with an eleven-species, thirteen reaction model of air are presented. Results of the method are discussed and compared with those of Hall, Escheroeder, and Marrone (inviscid hypersonic air flows with coupled non-equilibrium processes. IAS 30th annual meeting, Jan 1962). (Author).

Book excerpt: In the present monograph, we develop the kinetic theory of transport phenomena and relaxation processes in the flows of reacting gas mixtures and discuss its applications to strongly non-equilibrium conditions. The main attention is focused on the influence of non-equilibrium kinetics on gas dynamics and transport properties. Closed systems of fluid dynamic equations are derived from the kinetic equations in different approaches. We consider the most accurate approach taking into account the state-to-state kinetics in a flow, as well as simplified multi-temperature and one-temperature models based on quasi-stationary distributions. Within these approaches, we propose the algorithms for the calculation of the transport coefficients and rate coefficients of chemical reactions and energy exchanges in non-equilibrium flows; the developed techniques are based on the fundamental kinetic theory principles. The theory is applied to the modeling of non-equilibrium flows behind strong shock waves, in the boundary layer, and in nozzles. The comparison of the results obtained within the frame of different approaches is presented, the advantages of the new state-to-state kinetic model are discussed, and the limits of validity for simplified models are established. The book can be interesting for scientists and graduate students working on physical gas dynamics, aerothermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, non-equilibrium physical-chemical kinetics, and kinetic theory of gases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Similarity parameters are developed which govern the length of nonequilibrium zones behind normal shock waves. Non-equilibrium effects produced by both vibrational relaxation and dissociation are considered. The parameters can also account for arbitrary levels of free-stream vibrational energy or dissociation level. The validity of the parameters is examined using numerical computations of the properties of the non-equilibrium fields. These computations are made with the aid of experimentally based rate expressions. The parameters, when written in a form describing the variation of non-equilibrium zone length with Mach number, are shown to have acceptable accuracy. (Author).

Book excerpt: The high temperatures generated in gases by shock waves give rise to physical and chemical phenomena such as molecular vibrational excitation, dissociation, ionization, chemical reactions and inherently related radiation. In continuum regime, these processes start from the wave front, so that generally the gaseous media behind shock waves may be in a thermodynamic and chemical non-equilibrium state. This book presents the state of knowledge of these phenomena. Thus, the thermodynamic properties of high temperature gases, including the plasma state are described, as well as the kinetics of the various chemical phenomena cited above. Numerous results of measurement and computation of vibrational relaxation times, dissociation and reaction rate constants are given, and various ionization and radiative mechanisms and processes are presented. The coupling between these different phenomena is taken into account as well as their interaction with the flow-field. Particular points such as the case of rarefied flows and the inside of the shock wave itself are also examined. Examples of specific non-equilibrium flows are given, generally corresponding to those encountered during spatial missions or in shock tube experiments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These three volumes entitled Advances in Hypersonics contain the Proceedings of the Second and Third Joint US/Europe Short Course in Hypersonics which took place in Colorado Springs and Aachen. The Second Course was organized at the US Air Force Academy, USA in January 1989 and the Third Course at Aachen, Germany in October 1990. The main idea of these Courses was to present to chemists, com puter scientists, engineers, experimentalists, mathematicians, and physicists state of the art lectures in scientific and technical dis ciplines including mathematical modeling, computational methods, and experimental measurements necessary to define the aerothermo dynamic environments for space vehicles such as the US Orbiter or the European Hermes flying at hypersonic speeds. The subjects can be grouped into the following areas: Phys ical environments, configuration requirements, propulsion systems (including airbreathing systems), experimental methods for external and internal flow, theoretical and numerical methods. Since hyper sonic flight requires highly integrated systems, the Short Courses not only aimed to give in-depth analysis of hypersonic research and technology but also tried to broaden the view of attendees to give them the ability to understand the complex problem of hypersonic flight. Most of the participants in the Short Courses prepared a docu ment based on their presentation for reproduction in the three vol umes. Some authors spent considerable time and energy going well beyond their oral presentation to provide a quality assessment of the state of the art in their area of expertise as of 1989 and 1991.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer program has been developed for one-dimensional nonequilibrium reacting gas flow. The program is written in Fortran IV and is compatible with the IBM 7044/7094 direct coupled digital computer system at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. In addition to nonequilibrium chemistry, the program includes nonequilibrium vibrational and electronic energy relaxation and coupling effects between these energy modes and the chemistry. The formulation is based on a one-dimensional flow matching either a prescribed pressure or area variation along a streamtube. Thermodynamic properties are computed by assuming an ideal gas mixture and the equilibration of translational and rotational temperatures. The internal energy modes, rotation, vibration, and electronic excitation, are considered uncoupled; and a rigid rotator, cut off simple harmonic oscillator, independent of the electronic state, is assumed. Excitation of vibrational and electronic energies are treated similarly with terms which account for relaxation and chemical reactions. The effects of nonequilibrium vibrational and electronic states on chemical rates are included in the coupling analysis. The vibrational relaxation time constants were obtained from the Millikan and White data while the electronic relaxation time constants were determined for nitrogen from an analysis of existing shock tube radiation measurements. The computer program was used to solve for the nonequilibrium flow in a hypersonic nozzle and for eight streamlines in the inviscid flow field over a spherically blunted nine-degree semiapex angle cone at zero angle of attack. They are the forum at which scientists concerned with shock waves present their research. They USE shock waves for chemical kinetics studies, for materials studies, and smashing kidney stones; they STUDY the phenomena associated with flows involving shock waves, such as supersonic flow, explosions, detonations, volcanic eruptions, and, in this symposium, even such with-it topics as impact of Shoemaker-Levy on Jupiter and blast waves in the World Trade Center. They also discover new, bigger and better ways of generating flows at hypervelocity speeds and develop their technological tools further. The international exchange of information is documented in the proceedings volumes, which have become a storehouse of information on the subject, documenting the history of this peculiar branch of science that involves chemists, physicists, engineers, geophysicists, material scientists and biologists.
