Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemical Combination Among Metals The subject of chemical combination among metals is of considerable interest and importance in general chemistry. Viewing the recent developments of the chemistry of metals, we cannot fail to remark the immense strides made in little less than a score of years. This progress has been made possible by the rapid and incessant development of modern metallography. To give a historical picture would involve the detailed discussion of almost all the problems around which metallography is grouped. In the latter field - its usefulness has been recognized almost from the first but in the field, of metallurgy its application has not been so general. It is hoped that this translation may aid in making the value of chemical dynamics and equilibrium clear to the metallurgist and metallurgical student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cobalt, Nickel, and the Elements of the Platinum Group Again, the platinum metals are so closely similar in many of their properties that it was decided to treat of their detection and estimation all together in Chapter X, rather than to deal with each separately at the end of the chapters dealing with their compounds, as has been done with cobalt and nickel, and, indeed, with the elements in the remaining volumes. The state of our knowledge of the chemistry of the platinum metals, although greatly improved during the last twenty years, is still far from satisfactory. This, no doubt, is due to a variety of reasons, such as the rarity of the metals, their consequently high cost, apd their similarity to one another, which renders their preparation in a state of purity an extremely arduous task. This latter feature is well exemplified by the efforts of Matthey to prepare pure iridium. His work is described in fair detail on pp. 235 - 236 of the text. Even after a most elaborate treatment the metal still contained traces of ruthenium and rhodium. In consequence of this difficulty, there can be no doubt that the early investigators frequently worked with a very impure metal, and this may in some measure account for discrepancies and apparent contradictions in their results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Elementary Metallurgy for the Use of Students Most metals in their natural state differ widely from their condition after subjection to the various smelting and refining operations by which they are separated from other matters associated with them in the earth. Ores of metals occur in two ways, viz., in the metallic state, the metal being free or simply mixed with other metals and in a state of chemical combination, which is by far the more common. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Certain New Phenomena in Chemistry: Read Before the Albany Institute, January 2, 1872 The other class of metals is peculiar in combining but slightly or not at all with pure mercury and these metals, like those in the preceding class, seem to have but one general characteristic, the reverse of that of the first class, hardness, and at times, even brittleness. Iron, probably, alone of all the metals known to the ancients, belongs to this second class; while of the new metals which seem to belong to it, chromium, columbium, titanium, manganese, zirconium, and perhaps rhodium are examples. Singularly enough platinum and aluminum, malleable and ductile metals, appear to be attached to this class by reason of the difficulty experienced in directly combining them with pure mercury. It is therefore plain that the proper classification of metals as regards their affinity for mercury, is their separation into these two divisions; the first consisting of metals that readily combine with pure mercury; the second consisting of metals which refuse to combine with pure mercury, at a moderate temperature. Book excerpt: First published in 1964, as the second edition of a 1939 original, this well-known textbook presents the fundamental principles of crystal chemistry at a level that was suitable for undergraduate students of chemistry, physics, metallurgy, mineralogy and related subjects at the time of its publication. The first part deals with the general principles of crystal architecture in terms of predominant types of binding forces between the atoms themselves. There are chapters on atomic structure, and the ionic, covalent, metallic and van der Waals bonds. The second part contains a discussion of systematic crystal chemistry in which the physical and chemical properties of crystalline substances are related to their structures.

The first point the chemist seeks to ascertain in reference to every substance, whether derived from the animal, vegetable, or mineral kingdom, is, Does it consist of one kind, or of several kinds of matter? The determination of this point enables him to make a primary division of all bodies into two great classes simple and compound. Simple bodies consist of but one ingredient, as, for example, the various metals; compound bodies of more than one constituent. Thus water contains two, sugar three, dry alum four, and pure white of egg six. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemical and Metallographic Examination of Iron, Steel and Brass The necessity for the chemical analysis of alloys has long been recognized but modern methods of manufacture and the use of metals under conditions of severe strain demand additional information which can best be obtained by the examination of polished specimens. Both of these branches of metal inspection are considered in this book. Part I deals with the Chemical Analysis of Alloys and includes well tested methods of analysis selected mainly from reports of the United States Bureau of Standards or from papers of the American Society for Testing Materials. Although most of the standard methods of steel analysis are included, special emphasis has been placed on those methods which are both rapid and accurate. Part II considers the physical rather than the chemical inspection of metals and describes the methods of preparation and examination of polished metal surfaces as an independent means of determining the quality of material as well as an aid in getting representative samples for chemical analysis. A brief introduction to metallography, in so far as it applies to the inspection of alloys, is included. The authors wish to express their sincere appreciation to Messrs. Bauer and Deiss whose book on the "Sampling and Analysis of Iron and Steel," translated by them in 1915 and published with many additions and modifications suggested the idea of combining chemical and metallographic inspection. A small portion of the translation is included in this book, notably several tables and a number of photomicrographs for which the authors again express their thanks. Grateful acknowledgement is made to Professor Henry Fay for the use of several photomicrographs and to Dr. W. P. Davey for an X-ray Photograph. Special thanks are due to Mr. V. O. Homerberg who prepared and photographed many of the specimens used in illustration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
