Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemical Arithmetic and Calculation of Furnace Charges Stoichiometric calculations have formed part of chemical exercises in a number of institutions in the United States, but have rarely been reduced to a systematic course. The present manual may serve either as a text-book, or as convenient reference for the instructor. The author has often felt the need of a work covering all the elementary subdivisions of the subject, and has included in the text all of the problems which he was accustomed to present to his classes in General Chemistry. In Part II, in addition to the treatment of slag calculations by stoichiometric ratios, a method has been added which is believed to be of general application and may serve to greatly simplify many cases in the figuring of furnace charges. This "Representative Equation" method has not been complicated by the assumption of "values" in the fluxing material, but no one in charge of smelting operations should be at a loss in handling this factor in the computation of products.
