Book excerpt: Bryozoans are encrusting colonial organisms which are ubiquitous in freshwater and marine environments. As the dominant sessile organisms of the Antarctic shelf seas, they are a pivotal component of the ecosystem. This is the first identification guide to the Bryozoa and describes and illustrates all 264 species of cheilostomate Bryozoa which have been recorded from the Antarctic seas. It includes an illustrated dichotomous key to the genera, and for each genus there is a key to Antarctic species. All species are fully described, and a clear diagnosis is given for each genus, family, and superfamily.

This book was released on 2016-12-23 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morphological and Systematic Studies on the Cheilostomatous Bryozoa The first Plates to this work were prepared in the year 1901, which will ex plain why a number of the generic names used on the Plates have later been replaced by others on the accompanying explanations. In some cases, namely, I have often been obliged to name the figures given on a Plate at a period when I was not yet certain to what genus a given species should be referred, and I have therefore been obliged provisionally to use the earlier given generic name; in other cases I have later been obliged to use another generic name, because it had been shown in the interval that an older had the priority. In many cases I have followed the view of the priority question expressed by the Rev. A. M. Norman in his notes on the Natural History of East Finmark Polyzoa. In some few cases it has also been necessary to alter the specific name. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Biology of Bryozoans written by Robert M. Woollacott and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology of Bryozoans covers some of the unusual and even unique systems and aspects of bryozoans. The book discusses the gametogenesis of bryozoans; the brooding patterns of bryozoans; and the structure and classification of gymnolaemate larvae. The text also describes the metamorphosis, ancestrulae, and coloniality in bryozoan life cycles; the ultrastructure, mineralogy, and development of bryozoan skeletons; and polymorphism in marine bryozoans. Bryozoan feeding and culture; experimental techniques and culture methods; and the problem of the funiculi and the communications are also considered. The book further tackles the aging process in bryozoans; the bryozoan nervous system; and taxes and tropisms of bryozoans. The text also looks into the life strategies of bryozoans; the population genetics of bryozoans; and the adaptive model for the evolution of the ectoproct life cycle. Zoologists, marine biologists, and students taking related courses will find the book invaluable.
