Book Synopsis Chess Theory from Stamma to Steinitz, 1735-1894 by : Frank Hoffmeister
Download or read book Chess Theory from Stamma to Steinitz, 1735-1894 written by Frank Hoffmeister and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most chess biographies present the games of famous players--but not their writings. Filling that gap, this book begins with Syrian master and author of chess studies Philip Stamma, and finishes with the first world champion William Steinitz. The main novelties in opening, middlegame and endgame theory in the 160 year period are examined and biographical sketches put the contributions of more than 30 masters into context. The author presents many new insights--for example, regarding the origins of the Ponziani Opening, the Dutch Defense and the Petroff Defense. French star La Bourdonnais used other sources for almost every part of his Nouveau Traite. Morphy's analysis of the Philidor Defense was faulty and Anderssen's play included many positional ideas. Harrwitz and Neumann published modern treatises long before Steinitz came out with his Modern Chess Instructor. Many ending themes belong to less well-known authors, such as Cozio, Chapais, van Zuylen van Nyevelt, Sarratt, Kling and Horwitz, Berger and Salvio.

Download or read book Tomcat Rio written by Dave Baranek and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Topgun to Squadron Command You’re in the cockpit of the legendary F-14 Tomcat fighter, blazing along at twice the speed of sound seven miles above the ocean and the carrier that hurled you off its deck. You’re practicing dogfighting with “aggressors,” guys on your side flying F-16s. You’re patrolling the tense skies above Iraq, and with the push of a button you can launch the 100-mile Phoenix missile that can blow a foe to scrap before you even see him. You are an expert in fighter tactics and aircraft carrier operations, and it all leads to your command of an F-14 fighter squadron of more than three hundred people. Sounds like a week’s worth of daydreams, but it’s all real-life in the career of Dave “Bio” Baranek, and he shares it with you in the exciting, superbly crafted new book, Tomcat Rio. Dave – callsign “Bio” – pulled his readers into the exciting world of the F-14 and the Navy’s TOPGUN program with his popular books Topgun Days and Before Topgun Days. Now he’s back with the rest of the story, as he reaches the top level of expertise and proves it, not just in graded competitions but also where it counts, where you shoot at them and they shoot at you. Dave also shares the challenges he faced. A deadly foe called complacency. Learning a whole new mission late in his career. The unexpected trials that come with leading a squadron in the dynamic environment of Naval Aviation. This third volume is full of adventures, lessons, and inspiration. If you are a casual reader, you’ll turn the last page as a dedicated Tomcat fan. To make it all even more real, Tomcat Rio includes dozens of Bio’s best and most acclaimed photos. Photographer George Hall hailed one shot as “one of the best Tomcat photos ever taken.” In words and pictures, Bio immerses you in rich detail. He pipes you aboard as a member of an F-14 squadron. You share the camaraderie of Type A personalities. You plan risky missions, going toe-to-toe against America’s most volatile foes. You can almost smell the pungent jet exhaust, almost feel the gut-wrenching G’s of a dogfight, as Tomcat Rio pitches you into the thick of it as only Bio can tell it. Strap in! You’re going for one fantastic ride.

Book Synopsis Metamorphosis of Memories by : Berni G. Plett
Download or read book Metamorphosis of Memories written by Berni G. Plett and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2015-04-23 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gustavio Wholgemuth grew up in the landlocked country of Paraguay. After traveling the world and settling down in Canada, he accepts that his life is what it is, a roller coaster ride of re-cycled emotions that will only end when mortality finally arrives. One day his daughter Julia requests that he should keep his promise and write down all the stories he used to tell her. Metamorphosis of Memories is filled with experiences that originate from innocence, life and death, love and pain, and the continuous struggles that a child of Mennonite missionaries deals with - accepting his community’s well intended, yet often misguided religious convictions. In these stories Gustavio informs us how he was liberated from prejudice and the condemnation of others by the fortunate encounter with science, and the even more fortunate marriage to his soul-mate Dulcinea. When we recall a life memory, we do not remember the original event but the context in which we last recalled it, which in turn changes the accuracy of any story. Reminiscing about our past is the metamorphosis of our history into colorful stories, stories that we all carry etched on wings.
