Book excerpt: Excerpt from Checklist of the Vascular Plants of Steamboat Mountain Research Natural Area Lists 237 vascular plant taxa found in the 570-hectare Steamboat Mountain Research Natural Area. Notes on habitats, community types, and abundance are included for most taxa. Keywords: Vascular plants, checklists (vascular plants), natural areas (research), Washington (steamboat Mountain Research Natural Area). This research note provides scientists, educators, and land managers with baseline information on the presence, location, and abundance of vascular plants within the Steamboat Mountain Research Natural Area. In the future, changes in the vegetation-additions, deletions, changes in abundance, and shifts in habitat-can be determined from this baseline. The checklist can also be used in evaluating the effects of human activities in equivalent ecosystem types. Andrews Experimental Forest, Western Oregon The H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest was virtually undisturbed until 1950, when logging and road construction began. Logging in the area has been of two types: (1) salvage logging in which scattered decadent trees are harvested from old-growth stands adjacent to roads; and (2) clearcut logging where all trees are removed from areas ranging from about 4 to 16 hectares in size. Following logging, these clearcut units are generally broadcast-burned to eliminate logging slash. In the ensuing 20 years, 91 clearcut units have been logged, totaling 856 hectares, or approximately 14 percent of the total forest area. Thus, clearcut areas undergoing secondary succession range from 1 to 20 years in age and occupy a number of diverse sites (fig. Road rights - of way are also important in providing routes for plant migration in the forest. Road mileage now totals about 40, and rights - of - way occupy almost 2 percent of the total area. Specialized habitats existing on the forest include rock outcrops, mountain meadows, small bogs, and riparian zones. Rock outcrop areas, although numerous, are small and scattered throughout the forest over a wide range in elevation. Meadow Openings are generally confined to ridge - top positions at elevations of to meters and often ringed by stands of Abies Zasiocarpa. These rock outcrops and meadows offer a diversity of microhabitats and provide refuge for many plant Species unable to compete elsewhere (hickman Plant collections have been made in several bog areas which are situated over a consider able range in elevation. The most interesting boggy area, taxonomically, has been one at the head of Mack Creek near the summit of Lookout Moun tain. Riparian zones are probably the most extensive of all specialized habitats, as it is estimated that approximately 100 miles of perennial stream channel exist on the forest. Finally, there are extensive areas of aznus sinuata-dominated communities within the abam zone which occupy areas of heavy snow accumulation and impeded drainage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who works with the vascular plants of Iowa—researchers, conservationists, teachers, agricultural specialists, horticulturists, gardeners, and so on—and those who are simply interested in knowing more about the state's plants have long felt a need for a comprehensive flora of Iowa. This meticulously researched volume is a giant first step toward such a flora. This book consists of an extended essay on the natural history of the vascular plants of Iowa, a discussion of their origins, a description of the state's natural regions, and a painstakingly annotated checklist of Iowa vascular plants. The data, which apply to over 150 years, took more than 15 years to collect. All known vascular plants that grow and persist in Iowa without cultivation are included in the checklist. These are native plants, primarily, but a large number of introduced species have become established throughout the state. Also included are Iowa's major crop plants and some of its common garden plants. The lengthy checklist provides an accurate and up-to-date listing of species names and common names, synonyms, distribution, habitat, abundance, and origin; county names are given for very rare species, and the most complete information has been provided for all rare plants and troublesome species. The wealth of information is this well-organized, practical volume—which describes more than two thousand species from Adiantum pedatum, the northern maidenhair fern of moist woods and rocky slopes, to Zannichellia palustris, the horned pondweed of shallow marshes and coldwater streams—makes it possible to identify Iowa plants correctly. All midwesterners will want to own a copy of The Vascular Plants of Iowa.

Book excerpt: The Colorado Rockies are Ann Zwinger's subject in prose and drawing. There, 8,300 feet above sea level, summer is short and winter long and often harsh; it is a place where much of life exists on the margin. In good years the grasses are lush; in bad years, even the mice starve. But it is a land the Zwingers have lovingly explored and recorded, careful not to disrupt the balance of the land, the relationship of plant to animal and of each to its environment. These forty acres, called Constant Friendship after the Maryland land her ancestor settled in the early 1730s, are a place of all seasons, for even in winter there is a promise of spring, and in spring the foretaste of summer. The white of snow becomes the white of summer clouds, the resonant green of spruce becomes the green head of drake mallard ... here part of each season is contained in every other. In beautiful and simple language and with 80 illustrations, Beyond the Aspen Grove tells of meadow, lake, marsh and forest, of algae and dragonflies, of deer and jays that live in the thin clear air of the mountain world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nestled between the Rocky Mountains to the west and the High Plains to the east, Denver, Colorado, is nicknamed the Mile High City because its official elevation is exactly one mile above sea level. Over the past ten years, it has also been one of the country's fastest-growing metropolitan areas. In Denver's early days, its geographic proximity to the mineral-rich mountains attracted miners, and gold and silver booms and busts played a large role in its economic success. Today, its central location—between the west and east coasts and between major cities of the Midwest—makes it a key node for the distribution of goods and services as well as an optimal site for federal agencies and telecommunications companies. In Metropolitan Denver, Andrew R. Goetz and E. Eric Boschmann show how the city evolved from its origins as a mining town into a cosmopolitan metropolis. They chart the foundations of Denver's recent economic development—from mining and agriculture to energy, defense, and technology—and examine the challenges engendered by a postwar population explosion that led to increasing income inequality and rapid growth in the number of Latino residents. Highlighting the risks and rewards of regional collaboration in municipal governance, Goetz and Boschmann recount public works projects such as the construction of the Denver International Airport and explore the smart growth movement that shifted development from postwar low-density, automobile-based, suburban and exurban sprawl to higher-density, mixed use, transit-oriented urban centers. Because of its proximity to the mountains and generally sunny weather, Denver has a reputation as a very active, outdoor-oriented city and a desirable place to live and work. Metropolitan Denver reveals the purposeful civic decisions made regarding tourism, downtown urban revitalization, and cultural-led economic development that make the city a destination.
