Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give a comprehensive introduction to the theory of spline functions, together with some applications to various fields, emphasizing the significance of the relationship between the general theory and its applications. At the same time, the goal of the book is also to provide new ma terial on spline function theory, as well as a fresh look at old results, being written for people interested in research, as well as for those who are interested in applications. The theory of spline functions and their applications is a relatively recent field of applied mathematics. In the last 50 years, spline function theory has undergone a won derful development with many new directions appearing during this time. This book has its origins in the wish to adequately describe this development from the notion of 'spline' introduced by 1. J. Schoenberg (1901-1990) in 1946, to the newest recent theories of 'spline wavelets' or 'spline fractals'. Isolated facts about the functions now called 'splines' can be found in the papers of L. Euler, A. Lebesgue, G. Birkhoff, J.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to develop algorithms of shape-preserving spline approximation for curves/surfaces with automatic choice of the tension parameters. The resulting curves/surfaces retain geometric properties of the initial data, such as positivity, monotonicity, convexity, linear and planar sections. The main tools used are generalized tension splines and B-splines. A difference method for constructing tension splines is also developed which permits one to avoid the computation of hyperbolic functions and provides other computational advantages. The algorithms of monotonizing parametrization described improve an adequate representation of the resulting shape-preserving curves/surfaces. Detailed descriptions of algorithms are given, with a strong emphasis on their computer implementation. These algorithms can be applied to solve many problems in computer-aided geometric design.

Book excerpt: Approximation Theory, Wavelets and Applications draws together the latest developments in the subject, provides directions for future research, and paves the way for collaborative research. The main topics covered include constructive multivariate approximation, theory of splines, spline wavelets, polynomial and trigonometric wavelets, interpolation theory, polynomial and rational approximation. Among the scientific applications were de-noising using wavelets, including the de-noising of speech and images, and signal and digital image processing. In the area of the approximation of functions the main topics include multivariate interpolation, quasi-interpolation, polynomial approximation with weights, knot removal for scattered data, convergence theorems in Padé theory, Lyapunov theory in approximation, Neville elimination as applied to shape preserving presentation of curves, interpolating positive linear operators, interpolation from a convex subset of Hilbert space, and interpolation on the triangle and simplex. Wavelet theory is growing extremely rapidly and has applications which will interest readers in the physical, medical, engineering and social sciences.

Book excerpt: Providing an introduction to isogeometric methods with a focus on their mathematical foundations, this book is composed of four chapters, each devoted to a topic of special interests for isogeometric methods and their theoretical understanding. It contains a tutorial on splines and generalizations that are used in CAD parametrizations, and gives an overview of geometric modeling techniques that can be used within the isogeometric approach, with a focus on non-tensor product splines. Finally, it presents the mathematical properties of isogeometric spaces and spline spaces for vector field approximations, and treats in detail an application of fundamental importance: the isogeometric simulation of a viscous incompressible flow. The contributions were written by Carla Manni and Hendrik Speelers, Vibeke Skytt and Tor Dokken, Lourenco Beirao da Veiga, Annalisa Buffa, Giancarlo Sangalli and Rafael Vazquez, and finally by John Evans and Thomas J.R. Hughes.

Book excerpt: Curves and Surfaces provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of approximation theory with emphasis on approximation of images, surface compression, wavelets, and tomography. This book covers a variety of topics, including error estimates for multiquadratic interpolation, spline manifolds, and vector spline approximation. Organized into 77 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the method, based on a local Taylor expansion of the final curve, for computing the parameter values. This text then presents a vector approximation based on general spline function theory. Other chapters consider a nonparametric technique for estimating under random censorship the amplitude of a change point in change point hazard models. This book discusses as well the algorithm for ray tracing rational parametric surfaces based on inversion and implicitization. The final chapter deals with the results concerning the norm of the interpolation operator and error estimates for a square domain. This book is a valuable resource for mathematicians.

Addressing cutting-edge research topics and advances in computer aided geometric design and isogeometric analysis, it covers distinguishing curve/surface constructions and spline models, with a special focus on emerging adaptive spline constructions, fundamental spline theory and related algorithms, as well as various aspects of isogeometric methods, e.g. efficient quadrature rules and spectral analysis for isogeometric B-spline discretizations. Applications in finite element and boundary element methods are also discussed. Given its scope, the book will be of interest to both researchers and graduate students working in these areas.

In addition, it describes a new method for modeling one dimensional and multidimensional signals as successions of local polynomial splines and their spectral characteristics. It provides examples of how the proposed methods can be applied in specific cases, together with signal processing software examples in the MATLAB environment, and models of special processes in the Simulink environment. The book’s goal is to make it easier for beginners to understand the subject matter; it is intended for engineers, undergraduate and graduate students engaged in research or the evaluation and design of hardware and software for the digital processing and recovery of signals.
