Book excerpt: NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS Chats On Postage Stamps This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Postage Stamps of the United States It is interesting to note, on many of the postmaster's stamps, a survival of the early custom of vouching for the prepayment of postage by means of the postmaster's signature. The New York Postmaster or his deputies placed their initials on the stamps of that city. Mr. Mitchell of New Haven wrote his name on each stamp. The Postmaster of Alexandria numbered his stamps. The stamps of Brattleboro bear a facsimile of the Post master's initials, and on those from Baltimore the signature is reproduced in full. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Avery Collection of the Postage Stamps of the World I did nothing more in stamps until about 1878 when I commenced again with Lincoln's album, and was fortunate enough to fill up most of the blank spaces, and had a very good number of rare stamps. I was. However, very disgusted with this style of collecting when I paid a visit to the Birmingham Philatelic Society and saw the method of arranging stamps on hinges and classifying perforations, and I finally decided, about 1887, to sell my collection again. I sold some portion, but as I saw some of the rarities go I changed my mind and began again with a good Senf album. As I filled up one country after another I began removing these into special albums. I had the opportunity of buying a good special collection of Australian stamps belonging to Mr. Bullock, of Australia, and added the Australian stamps I had before to these, and so made it into a much stronger and more perfect collection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Miniature Messages, Jack Child analyzes Latin American postage stamps, revealing the messages about history, culture, and politics encoded in their design and disseminated throughout the world. While postage stamps are a sanctioned product of official government agencies, Child argues that they accumulate popular cultural value and take on new meanings as they circulate in the public sphere. As he demonstrates in this richly illustrated study, the postage stamp conveys many of the contestations and triumphs of Latin American history. Child combines history and political science with philatelic research of nearly forty thousand Latin American stamps. He focuses on Argentina and the Southern Cone, highlighting stamps representing the consolidation of the Argentine republic and those produced under its Peronist regime. He compares Chilean stamps issued by the leftist government of Salvador Allende and by Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship. Considering postage stamps produced under other dictatorial regimes, he examines stamps from the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Paraguay. Child studies how international conflicts have been depicted on the stamps of Argentina, Chile, and Peru, and he pays particular attention to the role of South American and British stamps in establishing claims to the Malvinas/Falkland Islands and to Antarctica. He also covers the cultural and political history of stamps in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Grenada, Mexico, Uruguay, Venezuela and elsewhere. In Miniature Messages, Child finds the political history of modern Latin America in its “tiny posters.”

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Postage Stamps as Propaganda In recent years I have been particularly struck by the rapidly increasing tendency to use postage stamps for propaganda pur poses. To my good fortune, my duties in the Philatelic Division of the Pan American Union and my graduate studies at George town University have afforded me excellent opportunities for delving into many facets of this subject. I am exceedingly grateful to Mr. Albert F. Kunze, Chief of the Philatelic Division of the Pan American Union, and Dr. James B. Atkinson, acting head of the Department of Political Science at Georgetown University, for their interest in this connection. While I have benefited by the encouragement of both Mr. Kunze and Dr. Atkinson, it need hardly be pointed out that the views expressed in this monograph are my own and do not in any way reflect the official policies of either the Pan American Union or George town University. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Comprehensive Catalogue of the Postage Stamps of the United States of America No reference is made as to postmarks, though in some of the earlier issues Carrier, Steamboat and Paid Cancellations are decidedly rare, as also those shewing year dates. Again certain stamps on entire envelopes are of greater value than if detached, a notable example being the 900. Of 1869 which is priced at £3 in the catalogues, but for which the writer (who has yet to see one) has heard of an offer of £20 to purchase a fine copy on entire! The colour of the obliterating ink may also have a marked effect on the value, green for instance being very scarce in the 1847 Issue. No Imperforate or part perforated varieties of stamps that are normally perforated are treated as varieties, except where such are beyond suspicion owing to their being found in pairs or blocks; and double or misplaced perforations are not listed, though they are frequently met with and probably exist in every issue. Of the misplaced transfers only the most prominent varieties are described. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
