Book excerpt: "Rod Pulido delivers the ultimate one-two punch: bare-knuckled, bruising honesty wrapped in humor, sincerity, and sweetness." — Becky Albertalli, bestselling author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda Experience the extreme joys, sorrows, and triumphs of a queer Filipino-American teenager struggling to prove himself in an unforgiving world. A poignant coming-of-age story, perfect for fans of Patron Saints of Nothing and Juliet Takes a Breath. Self preservation. That's Bobby's motto for surviving his notoriously violent high school unscathed. Being out and queer would put an unavoidable target on his back, especially in a Filipino community that frowns on homosexuality. It's best to keep his head down, get good grades, and stay out of trouble. But when Bobby is unwillingly outed in a terrible way, he no longer has the luxury of being invisible. A vicious encounter has him scrambling for a new way to survive—by fighting back. Bobby is inspired by champion Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao to take up boxing and challenge his tormentor. But when Pacquiao publicly declares his stance against queer people, Bobby's faith—in his hero and in himself—is shaken to the core. A powerful and unflinching debut that will both shatter and uplift hearts with every read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is specifically written for both Pacman fans, boxing enthusiasts and random individuals who wish to take a closer look at the life of the “Peoples Champion”. A sporting icon, Filipino’s pride and a man with countless abilities - that’s how Manny Pacquiao is often described. In the realm of boxing he is known as “Pacman”, but in the real world he is recognized as an idol of the mass - a man who had been a figure of hope, determination and success. His story is simply one of a kind. Born from a middle-class family and struggled with poverty, had dreamed, faced countless obstacles (in ring and in real life), but surpassed each one with utmost courage, and eventually achieved success. He is the exact person to show the journey of a man from ‘rugs to riches’. Manny Pacquiao undoubtedly deserves the recognition as world’s best fighter and pound-for-pound king. Everyone is perhaps fully aware how he beat the boxing champion in several fights. A true champion, isn’t he? But that’s not where his virtuosity ends. Manny Pacquiao has been vigorously pursuing his attention and interest in diverse fields such as entertainment (acting and singing), politics and other kind of sports. All of his achievements speak for his tremendous success. However, what really caught the heart and interest of the crowd is the fact that he had been once a simple boy living a simple life but with great determination and hard work, and ready to actualize his dreams. “Pacman” has already reached the peak of success and currently serving his nation. But success is never without difficulties.

Book excerpt: Manny Pacquiao, 31, was recently named "Fighter of the Decade" by the Boxing Writers' Association and is the only fighter ever to capture seven championship belts in seven different weight classes. But few could have imagined that Pacquiao would have ever reached the pinnacle of his sport, considering his background. He ran away from home -- a cardboard shack in General Santos City in the Philippines -- at age fourteen. After making his way to Manila, and eventually the United States, Pacquiao hooked up with trainer Freddie Roach in 2001, and, from there, his fighting career took off. Named one of Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World" last year, the aptly nicknamed Pac-Man is a fascinating figure who will go down as one of the greatest boxers in history.

Book excerpt: The inevitability of what was to come hung in the air but the crowd at the outdoor arena at Caesars Palace seemed as dazed as to what was happening as Duran. Hearns, now oozing confidence, approached center ring and again touched gloves with Duran. It would be the last civil thing he did. Gliding around the ring and looking like a demented, black vampire with his goatee and Jeri curls, the Hit Man, he had reassumed the moniker for the fight, went in for the kill. Pushing Duran backwards he leapt in and clobbered the cowering fighter with a vicious right hand that staggered Duran back into the ropes again. Hearns bounced backwards and then jumped in again with another vicious right hand and began pummeling his prey with a series of punches that kept Duran standing straight up. Roberto tried to move off the ropes, so Hearns lured him out and then pushed him back with two probing left jabs to the chest before dropping the coup de grace. The final right hand that crashed over Durans guard was so brutal, the impact twisted his head to the side and sucked all the air out of the arena. A collective gasp went up as Roberto Duran fell face forward to the canvas. There would be no count. Durans corner men jumped into the ring as Hearns leapt onto the shoulders of his handlers. It was the most dramatic knockout of Thomas Hearns career and upped the ante for his potential challenge of Marvelous Marvin Hagler for the middleweight championship. Hearns would fight one more bout before that showdown, a three round blast out of contender Fred Hutchings, but he would never again be so brilliantly devastating.

Book excerpt: Pound for pound, Manny is the best boxer in the world, but even more important than holding that distinction, Manny has connected with the people of his home country, the Philippines, to the point where he is almost like a god. --Lennox Lewis, former heavyweight boxer and HBO commentator Pacman is Manny's miracle story - his autobiography. Born and raised in an impoverished village in the Philippines, Manny began his life on the ropes. He provided for his family of five in his pre-boxing life by selling practically anything and everything on the streets just to help his family survive. The hard work, determination, and sheer grit that would characterize him as a boxer showed through in a big way during these early years. Though he dreamed of being a priest, his mother could not afford the education, so he soon found another way to move heaven and earth: boxing. According to the New York Times, Manny is pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world today. His rags-to-riches story will inspire you.
