Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of the new imperialism in the late 19th century, one after another Muslim country was officially either colonised or came under the influence of the major Western powers. This had a far-reaching impact on the Muslim world. It altered the political geography and replaced or transformed the indigenous politics, social, education and economic systems of the colonised countries. Unfortunately, even after the Muslim countries achieved independence, they continued to be influenced by the Western systems legally, socially and educationally. In the sphere of education, liberation from imperialism often did not entail the creation of higher education based on indigenous tradition and values. To make matters worse, most of the secular leaders in the Muslim countries continued to borrow the Western models of higher education uncritically. This book brings together a collection of chapters on higher education in Muslim countries. Topics range from the philosophical and structural dimensions of higher education, reform of higher education, present achievements and gaps in the level of education and scientific research in Muslim countries, as well as ranking institutions ofhigher education. All seven chapters present useful insights on various issues of higher education in Muslim countries. Discussions from the chapters examine the current trends adopted by most Muslim countries and challenge readers to critically consider the coexistence of material and spiritual values in higher education, particularly from the Islamic perspectives. Equipped with such information, policy makers, researchers, university leaders and students can be better prepared to comprehend the major trends in higher education in Muslim countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exciting exploration of Stephen King’s digital writing maneuvers and electronic ventures on online platforms and e-readers unravels the author’s latest writing techniques and justifies his unprecedented success in the new millennium. It investigates the latest additions to the Master of Horror’s “toolbox” by studying King’s media presence and writing oeuvre in the twenty-first century through online projects, such as his videogame Discordia. The book closely traces King’s shifts from print to the digital as he crafts his stories to share with his constant readers. Its examination of King’s re-vitalized Gothic sheds light on his shift towards new realizations that take into consideration the needs and tastes of the contemporary consuming public in a constant dialogue with their contemporary fears and anxieties. While exploring King’s literary generic and technological crossovers, the book stresses the need for an encompassing theory that takes into account literary tradition, norms, and motifs adjusted according to the materialities and technological specificities of each medium in specific socio-cultural and economic contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a period characterized by growing social inequality, precarious work, the legacies of settler colonialism, and the emergence of new social movements, Change and Continuity presents innovative interdisciplinary research as a guide to understanding Canada's political economy and a contribution to progressive social change. Assessing the legacy of the Canadian political economy tradition – a broad body of social science research on power, inequality, and change in society – the essays in this volume offer insight into contemporary issues and chart new directions for future study. Chapters from both emerging and established scholars expand the boundaries of Canadian political economy research, seeking new understandings of the forces that shape society, the ensuing conflicts and contradictions, and the potential for social justice. Engaging with interconnected topics that include shifts in immigration policy, labour market restructuring, settler colonialism, the experiences of people with disabilities, and the revitalization of workers' movements, this collection builds upon and deepens critical analysis of Canadian society and considers its application to contexts beyond Canada. The latest in a series of related volumes on Canadian political economy, Change and Continuity explores the past, present, and potential futures of the discipline in a global context, offering insight into some of the most pressing issues of our time.

With passion and verve, some of Australia's finest writers range through vast territory exploring new directions in film and media, enigmas and creativity, histories of mothering, narratives of indigenous and migrant experience, folk, country and multicultural music traditions, and dilemmas of interpretation. These writers appreciate the power of stories, for good and ill. They interrogate narratives of Australia's past and present and call for new stories for changing times. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization: The Paradox of Organizational Behavior is an excellent resource for undergraduate and graduate students, professors, policy makers, and the intelligentsia worldwide. Sagini explores the text's major themes using historical, materialistic, and imperialistic factors. The globalization movement is shaped by economic, political, technological, and cultural forces that transform human collectivities. Instability and related concomitant issues such as disease, energy security, and terrorism challenge the reconstructive role of internal and external factors in foreign policy decision-making. The implications of the global forces on the divided world of gated communities, urban and village ghettos, national borders, and cultural decay could be far-reaching if leaders fail to redesign and implement effective governance models.
