Book excerpt: In our present generation of mammoth discount chains, wholesale membership outlets, and internet buying, it has been increasingly difficult for the pioneer - older, more established retail chains - to continue to operate, the latest casualty being Montgomery Ward. What was once known as «America's Store», the venerable F.W. Woolworth Company, has disappeared from downtowns and shopping centers as shopping trends and merchandising have changed. This story of one of the five founders of the Woolworth Company, Earle Perry Charlton, chronicles his life (both personal and professional) and what it was like to establish a new type of business in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Starting with meager savings and little capital of his own, he established a chain of fifty-three E.P. Charlton five & ten cent stores that was based in Fall River, Massachusetts, and stretched across Canada and the west coast of the United States from Seattle to San Diego, before joining with four other friendly competitors in 1912 to form what was to become the F. W. Woolworth Company.

Book excerpt: Charlton is a community long known for its rural atmosphere and for the broad vistas seen from its high hills. Once called "Cow Town" because of its many dairy farms, Charlton now hosts a score of housing subdivisions. Most Charltonians commute to jobs out of town but return to the quiet of the Charlton countryside after work. In Charlton, you will return to the one-hundred-year period from the nation's centennial to its bicentennial. Included are rare photographs of not only busy mills, bucolic farm scenes, rural schools, landscapes, and old houses but also sawmills, gristmills, and woolen and shoddy mills. In these pages, you will visit the four villages that grew up around the mills-Charlton Center, Dodge, Charlton City, and Charlton Depot-and experience the activity of Charlton Depot before its slow decline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the mid-nineteenth century 80 percent of Charlton land was used for agricultural purposes. The railroad arrived in 1838 giving the farmers new markets. The dairy industry, from which Charlton received it moniker "cow town", expanded up to the First World War, then began a long decline, and has now vanished. As the twentieth century drew closer, small shops along the many waterways, began to be absorbed by larger mills which are now gone. Charlton's excellent school system and its geographic location with its proximity to Worcester, Springfield, Hartford and Boston resulted in a dramatic population increase in the latter part of the 20th century. In 1920 the population was 1,995, by 1970 it had slowly increased to 4,654, then it was "discovered" and today it is over 13,000. Today, taking a leisurely walk through the woodlands of Charlton will result in viewing stonewalls in every direction, evidence of once open fields cleared of stones by hard working farmers of a bygone time.

Book excerpt: A curse links two pairs of lovers who live over a thousand years apart. For centuries, it has slithered through the idyllic Kent village of Ashward, spoiling lives and destroying people. When Kate Summers arrives in Ashward, disillusioned with her London life and her marriage to Mark, she is determined to make a new start and focusses all her energies on the restoration of their beautiful Tudor manor house. But soon she encounters the layer of darkness that lies close to the surface of village life. What causes the sophisticated and learned vicar such anguish? What dark mystery do the cellars in Ashward Priory hold? Who or what is the menacing black figure present at local festivals? Gradually Kate discovers for herself the answers to these questions as she becomes ensnared by the beauty and savagery of pagan ritual and natural magic, still vividly alive in Ashward. When, at last, it seems that she has found true friendship and the sort of love that she has always longed for, will she, because of the ancient curse, lose everything that she holds most precious?

Book excerpt: James Charlton has produced a ringing indictment of disability oppression, which, he says, is rooted in degradation, dependency, and powerlessness and is experienced in some form by five hundred million persons throughout the world who have physical, sensory, cognitive, or developmental disabilities. Nothing About Us Without Us is the first book in the literature on disability to provide a theoretical overview of disability oppression that shows its similarities to, and differences from, racism, sexism, and colonialism. Charlton's analysis is illuminated by interviews he conducted over a ten-year period with disability rights activists throughout the Third World, Europe, and the United States. Charlton finds an antidote for dependency and powerlessness in the resistance to disability oppression that is emerging worldwide. His interviews contain striking stories of self-reliance and empowerment evoking the new consciousness of disability rights activists. As a latecomer among the world's liberation movements, the disability rights movement will gain visibility and momentum from Charlton's elucidation of its history and its political philosophy of self-determination, which is captured in the title of his book. Nothing About Us Without Us expresses the conviction of people with disabilities that they know what is best for them. Charlton's combination of personal involvement and theoretical awareness assures greater understanding of the disability rights movement.

Book excerpt: 'For me, he is England's greatest ever player' Gary Lineker 'Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world' Manchester United FC Sir Bobby Charlton was Manchester United through and through. He was a member of the original Busby Babes and devoted his career to the club, playing in 754 games over 17 years. During that period he won everything the game had to offer, played alongside some of the greats such as Best and Law, suffered devastating defeats and was involved in one of the greatest football tragedies of all time. Here is his story of those United years in his own words. With his beloved Reds he tasted FA Cup victory in the emotional final of 1963, won three first division championships and in 1968 he reached the pinnacle of club success, winning the European Cup. Inevitably, such highs are balanced with no less dramatic lows, such as the 1957 European Cup semi-final, the highly charged 1958 FA Cup loss which followed only weeks after the horrors of the Munich Air disaster, and the 1969 European Cup defeat by Milan. He was one of the true gentlemen of football and the legacy that Sir Bobby Charlton gave to United is beyond compare. RIP Sir Bobby Charlton 1937-2023
