Book Synopsis Charity Alive by : Mary Olga McKenna
Download or read book Charity Alive written by Mary Olga McKenna and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1998 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charity Alive: Sisters of Charity, Halifax, 1950-1980 is the sequel to Sister Maura Power's chronicle of the first one hundred years of the congregation's history (Ryerson, 1956). Based on congregational records and interviews with members of the order, the book traces, describes, and assesses the events which moved the Sisters from the traditional patterns of religious life over the first century into the 1980's. It shows the Sisters' response to the documents of Vatican II and the economic, cultural, and religious challenges during three decades of adaptation, renovation, and renewal. Charity Alive also presents the transformation effected within the congregation which liberated the Sisters and empowered them to reach beyond their traditional ministries of education, health and social services to embrace new forms of ministry such as serving the less visible needs of the economically poor on the fringes of society.
Book Synopsis Steadfast Charity by : Mary Sweeney SC
Download or read book Steadfast Charity written by Mary Sweeney SC and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-16 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steadfast Charity covers the history of the Sisters of Charity of Halifax during the years 1972—2002 as the congregation met the challenges of Vatican II and created new models for living vowed religious life. New ways of praying, of being community, of giving service, of understanding the vows—all required trust, openness, risk and a willingness to let go of security. As the congregation responded to the call to renewal, little did the sisters realize how much would change. In this book, Sisters of Charity Mary Sweeney, Martha Westwater, Elaine Nolan and Julia Heslin explore these times by examining the life and practices of the sisters and by contextualizing decisions that were made by the governing bodies during those years. They tell the story of an organization and its evolution as a part of the “Church in the Modern World.” The authors offer an inside view of a congregation which, in navigating its transformation through a time of upheaval in the Church and in the world, remained faithful to its purpose, as stated in its Constitutions: “to give joyful witness to love.”

Book Synopsis Mothers of the Municipality by : Judith Fingard
Download or read book Mothers of the Municipality written by Judith Fingard and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlighting women's activism in Halifax after the Second World War, Mothers of the Municipality is a tightly focused collection of essays on social policy affecting women. The contributors - feminist scholars in history, social work, and nursing - examine women's experiences and activism, including those of African Nova Scotian 'day's workers, ' Sisters of Charity, St. John Ambulance Brigades, 'Voices' for peace, and social welfare bureaucrats. The volume underscores the fact that the 1950s and 60s were not simply years of quiet conservatism, born-again domesticity, and consumption. Indeed, the period was marked by profound and rapid change for women. Despite their almost total exclusion from the formal political arena, which extended into the tumultuous 1970s, women in Halifax were instrumental in creating and reforming programs and services, often amid controversy. Mothers of the Municipality explores women's activism and the provision of services at the community level. If the adage "think globally; act locally" has any application in modern history, it is with the women who fought many of the battles in the larger war for social justice.
Book Synopsis The State of Nonprofit America by : Lester M. Salamon
Download or read book The State of Nonprofit America written by Lester M. Salamon and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2004-05-13 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press and the Aspen Institute publication The thousands of organizations that comprise America's private nonprofit sector represent a national treasure. Yet serious pressures are altering the playing field on which nonprofits operate, and many are responding in ways that may undermine their popular support. Despite the significance of these developments, little has been done to analyze and interpret them in a clear and understandable way. Lester M. Salamon, a leading authority on the nonprofit sector, has joined forces with more than a dozen other experts and the Aspen Institute to produce this volume, an integrated, authoritative assessment of the state of nonprofit America and the key trends affecting its evolution. The book is organized into three sections. The first summarizes critical trends and issues; the second examines each of the sector's major subsectors (e.g., health, education, social services, arts and culture, international assistance, advocacy); the third focuses on major cross-cutting trends and issues (commercialization, changing government policy, accountability, and demographic and technological imperatives). The Resilient Sector will be updated every two years. It provides a basic sourcebook for sector leaders, the press, public officials, and citizens concerned about the future of America's nonprofit sector and eager to understand the forces affecting it.

Book Synopsis The Key Of The Mysteries by : Eliphas Levi
Download or read book The Key Of The Mysteries written by Eliphas Levi and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2014-05-26 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the high-water mark of the thought of Eliphas Levi. It may be regarded as written by him as his Thesis for the Grade of Exempt Adept, just as his "Ritual and Dogma" was his Thesis for the grade of a Major Adept. He is, in fact, no longer talking of things as if their sense was fixed and universal. He is beginning to see something of the contradiction inherent in the nature of things, or at any rate, he constantly illustrates the fact that the planes are to be kept separate for practical purposes, although in the final analysis they turn out to be one. This, and the extraordinarily subtle and delicate irony of which Eliphas Levi is one of the greatest masters that has ever lived, have baffled the pedantry and stupidity of such commentators as Waite.

Book Synopsis Wisdom from the Christian Mystics: How to Pray the Christian Way by : David Torkington
Download or read book Wisdom from the Christian Mystics: How to Pray the Christian Way written by David Torkington and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Quietism was condemned in 1687 it resulted in an antipathy, if not an open hostility to authentic mystical theology. This situation has lasted down to the present day and has been aggravated by many forms of counterfeit mysticism that are self-centred, not God-centred. The consequences have been disastrous. To restore the balance lost to Christian spirituality, the author returns to the profound mystical teaching that Jesus himself lived and handed on to the early Church through his disciples. His research has resulted in a book that details a practical daily spirituality for all, that mirrors that which was lived by our earliest Christian forebears. It emphasises the original balance between personal and communal prayer in such a way that our whole lives become the place where we continually offer our lives through Christ to the Father.
