Book excerpt: At first glance, the theories behind charge transfer and organic photoelectrocatalysis do not seem to have much in common. It turns out, however, that to carry out an effective organic synthesis using photoelectrocatalysis one needs a solid theoretical foundation in charge transfer, which is the topic of this primer. First, the authors introduce the theoretical foundation of charge transfer, focusing on electron transfer and hole transfer and how they relate to photochemistry and electrochemistry. Then, the authors move into applications of photoelectrochemistry in organic synthesis. A series of examples demonstrate the three types of synthetic photoelectrochemistry that have emerged in recent years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photocatalytic reactions are characterized by the transfer of the photo-generated charge carriers between semiconductors and organic molecules. A fundamental study of the charge transfer process between organic molecules and semiconductors are required to improve the efficiency of the photocatalytic processes. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is proven to be a useful technique for studying the charge transfer. The photo-generated charge carriers consist of hole and electron, the latter can give a structure of infrared band, which probably behave as delocalized electrons, give a structureless increase in the background of the IR spectrum. In this work, the following results will discussed: (i) in situ infrared study of anatase TiO2 absorbed with various kinds of organic molecules (ethanol, PEG 200, PEG 20000, PVA, ethylene glycol, glycerol); (ii) in situ infrared study of semiconductor materials with adsorbed ethanol. In situ infrared study of N719 dye sensitized solar cell and photocatalytic activity of polyaniline will also be discussed in the presentation. The results of this study will help improve the understanding of the mechanism of photocatalytic reactions.

Book excerpt: In this book, expert authors describe advanced solar photon conversion approaches that promise highly efficient photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical cells with sophisticated architectures on the one hand, and plastic photovoltaic coatings that are inexpensive enough to be disposable on the other. Their leitmotifs include light-induced exciton generation, junction architectures that lead to efficient exciton dissociation, and charge collection by percolation through mesoscale phases. Photocatalysis is closely related to photoelectrochemistry, and the fundamentals of both disciplines are covered in this volume.

The theoretical framework is that of the Marcus theory, well-known from its extensive use in inorganic chemistry. The book deals with definitions of electron transfer, theory of electron transfer reactions (Marcus' and Pross-Shaik's approach) experimental diagnosis of electron transfer reactions, examples from inorganic/organic reactants and purely organic reactants, electro- and photochemical electron transfer, electron transfer catalyzed reactions, connections between electron transfer and polar mechanisms, and applications of electron transfer, such as electrosynthesis of organic chemicals, photochemical energy storage, conducting organic materials and chemiluminescence. The approach is new in so far as no comparable book has been published. The book will be of value to anyone interested in keeping track of developments in physical organic chemistry.

This book was released on 2001-05-02 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron transfer is the most important process to take place in natural and artificial chemical systems, playing a fundamental role, for example, in photosynthesis as well as in photography. Electron transfer reactions - oxidations and reductions - are involved in, among others, a variety of energy conversion processes, analytical methods, synthetic strategies, and information processing systems. This five-volume work is the only comprehensive yet up-to-date reference on electron transfer processes. Following a foreword by Nobel prize-winner R. A. Marcus, renowned experts from all over the world provide an interdisciplinary overview of every aspect of electron transfer including theoretical-physicochemical backgrounds, latest analytical techniques to identify, monitor and measure the rate of electron transfer, utilizing electron transfer reactions in organic synthesis and catalysis, electron transfer in the gas phase or in special heterogeneous systems such as zeolites or sensitized electrodes. Other central issues are the study of biological systems and the biomimetic electron transfer processes in artificial supramolecular systems. Finally, a complete volume is dedicated to the application of electron transfer in molecular-level electronics, imaging processes and energy conversion. Each chapter is complemented by numerous tables, formulae and illustrations providing an indispensable wealth of information. All references are cross-indexed throughout the work for easy access to this highly complex topic. Whether for quickly looking-up a keyword or as a thorough introduction to a special aspect, this is an essential handbook for everyone working in the field, from experts to postgraduates, from synthetic chemists, physicochemists or biochemists to research groups in material sciences.

Book excerpt: Photoelectrochemical Engineering for Solar Harvesting provides an up-to-date appraisal of the photon engineering of innovative catalysts for solar energy harvesting.Sunlight-driven fuel synthesis is the most sustainable and potentially economical option for producing energy vectors through water splitting. Thus this book focuses on the design of photocatalysts and water oxidation catalysts, as artificial photosynthesis and hydrogen fuel production via water oxidation (in place of fossil fuels) are two promising approaches towards renewable energy. The book critically analyzes the overall progress, potential challenges, and the possibility of industrialization of new catalysts in the near future. The primary emphasis of the discussion is on experimental approaches from materials synthesis to device applications, however, there will also be some introduction to relevant photochemistry concepts.Photoelectrochemical Engineering for Solar Harvesting is suitable for materials scientists and chemists who through the use of photonics are in continuous pursuit of improving the efficiencies of different devices used to capture solar energy for the generation of sustainable fuel. Covers design of innovative energy materials such as photocatalysts and water oxidation catalysts for solar energy harvesting Reviews briefly computational and theoretical approaches before providing comprehensive overview of experimental directions Provides information to guide photon and photoelectrochemical engineering of catalysts for solar application

Book excerpt: Focusing on complex naturally-occurring and synthetic supramolecular arrays, this work describes the mechanism by which transition metal complexes bind to DNA and how the DNA scaffold modifies the photochemical and photophysical properties to bound complexes. It includes details of photoinduced electron transfer between intercalated molecules, and examines thermally and photochemically induced electron transfer in supramolecular assemblies consisting of inorganic molecular building blocks.
