Book excerpt: Molecules in liquid and solid media are exposed to strong inter action forces from the surrounding medium. The formulation of a comprehensive theory of chemical processes in condensed media is consequently an elaborate task involving concepts from several areas of the natural sciences. Within the las~ two and a half decades very notable results towards the formulation of a 'unified' quantum mechanical theory of such processes have in fact been achieved, and by the variety of physical, chemical, and biological processes which can be suitably covered by this framework, the new theory represents an adequate alternative to the transition state theory. The present work has a two-fold purpose. Firstly, to provide a reasonably organized exposition of some basic aspects of these developments. This part emphasizes the fundamental similarities between chemical and other kinds of radiationless processes and includes the derivation of the most important rate expressions without resorting to involved mathematical techniques. The s- ond major purpose is to illustrate the 'unified' character of the rate theory by analysis of a considerable amount of expe- mental data from both 'conventional' kinetics and from such untraditional areas as low-temperature, strongly exothermic, and biological processes. Particular attention is here given to those systems for which a classical description is inadequate, and which provide a diagnostic distinction between several alternative theoretical approaches.

Book excerpt: Electron transfer is the most important process to take place in natural and artificial chemical systems, playing a fundamental role, for example, in photosynthesis as well as in photography. Electron transfer reactions - oxidations and reductions - are involved in, among others, a variety of energy conversion processes, analytical methods, synthetic strategies, and information processing systems. This five-volume work is the only comprehensive yet up-to-date reference on electron transfer processes. Following a foreword by Nobel prize-winner R. A. Marcus, renowned experts from all over the world provide an interdisciplinary overview of every aspect of electron transfer including theoretical-physicochemical backgrounds, latest analytical techniques to identify, monitor and measure the rate of electron transfer, utilizing electron transfer reactions in organic synthesis and catalysis, electron transfer in the gas phase or in special heterogeneous systems such as zeolites or sensitized electrodes. Other central issues are the study of biological systems and the biomimetic electron transfer processes in artificial supramolecular systems. Finally, a complete volume is dedicated to the application of electron transfer in molecular-level electronics, imaging processes and energy conversion. Each chapter is complemented by numerous tables, formulae and illustrations providing an indispensable wealth of information. All references are cross-indexed throughout the work for easy access to this highly complex topic. Whether for quickly looking-up a keyword or as a thorough introduction to a special aspect, this is an essential handbook for everyone working in the field, from experts to postgraduates, from synthetic chemists, physicochemists or biochemists to research groups in material sciences.

Book excerpt: Charge and Energy Transfer Dynamics in Molecular Systems Comprehensive resource offering knowledge on charge and energy transfer dynamics in molecular systems and nanostructures Charge and Energy Transfer Dynamics in Molecular Systems provides a unified description of different charge and energy transfer phenomena in molecular systems with emphasis on the theory, bridging the regimes of coherent and dissipative dynamics and thus presenting classic rate theories as well as modern treatments of ultrafast phenomena. Starting from microscopic models, the common features of the different transfer processes are highlighted, along with applications ranging from vibrational energy flow in large polyatomic molecules, the motion of protons in solution, up to the concerted dynamics of electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom in molecules and molecular aggregates. The newly revised and updated Fourth Edition contains a more detailed coverage of recent developments in density matrix theory, mixed quantum-classical methods for dynamics simulations, and a substantially expanded treatment of time-resolved spectroscopy. The book is written in an easy-to-follow style, including detailed mathematical derivations, thus making even complex concepts understandable and applicable. Charge and Energy Transfer Dynamics in Molecular Systems includes information on: Electronic and vibrational molecular states, covering molecular Schrödinger equation, Born—Oppenheimer separation and approximation, Hartree-Fock equations and other electronic structure methods Dynamics of isolated and open quantum systems, covering multidimensional wave packet dynamics, and different variants of density operator equations Interaction of molecular systems with radiation fields, covering linear and nonlinear optical response using the correlation function approach Intramolecular electronic transitions, covering optical transition and internal conversion processes Transfer processes of electrons, protons, and electronic excitation energy Providing in-depth coverage of the subject, Charge and Energy Transfer Dynamics in Molecular Systems is an essential resource for anyone working on timely problems of energy and charge transfer in physics, chemistry and biophysics as well as for all engaged in nanoscience and organic electronics.

Book excerpt: There has been tremendous interest in charge-transfer complex phenomena because of its wide applications in agricultural, industrial, biological activities, including anti-microbial, sedative, anticonvulsant and anti- in ammatory. Due to their cytotoxic, bactericide, and fungicide properties, CT complexes have found many applications in pharmaceutical industry. Some charge-transfer complexes have also been found to have high electrical conductivity. The objective of this work is to synthesize organic charge-transfer complexes in liquid and solid states and characterize them on the basis of spectroscopic techniques, including FT-IR, NMR, XRD, UV-Vis, Conductivity and Fluorescence spectroscopy. This book has been divided into four chapters. The first chapter is composed of an introduction on charge-transfer complexes, their types, theories and some characterization techniques. The Second, Third and Fourth chapters deal with the synthesis and spectral investigations electron-donor-acceptor-complexes in different polar solvents.

Book excerpt: As stated by Buckminster Fuller in Operation Manual for Spaceship Earth, "Synergy is the behavior of whole systems unpredicted by separately observed behaviors of any of the system's separate parts". In a similar vein, one might define an intellectual synergy as "an improvement in our understanding of the behavior of a system unpredicted by separately acquired viewpoints of the activities of such a system". Such considerations underlie, and provide a motivation for, an interdisciplinary approach to the problem of unraveling the deeper mysteries of cellular metabolism and organization, and have led a number of pioneering spirits, many represen ted in the pages which follow, to consider biological systems from an elec trochemical standpoint. is itself, of course, an interdisciplinary branch of Now electrochemistry science, and there is no doubt that many were introduced to it via Bockris and Reddy's outstanding, wide-ranging and celebrated textbook Modern Electrochemistry. If I am to stick my neck out, and seek to define bioelec trochemistry, I would take it to refer to "the study of the mutual interac tions of electrical fields and biological materials, including living systems".
