In an attempt to explore if any added benefits could be gained from experimenting with a new propellant type, additional physics had to be incorporated into the classical RLC model approach. A study into modeling how a micro-wire propellant would react when subjected to energy deposition via current-driven heating was undertaken. Once a first-order estimate, verified with computational estimates, was obtained then the classical RLC series circuit model could be used to compare and validate the results obtained from experimentation. It was found that while the proposed propellant type is feasible, it produced performance differences that could not be explained solely by the classical model and a more exhaustive investigation into various phenomena will have to be pursued.

As a working example we consider a micro-PPT developed at the Air Force Research Laboratory. This is a miniaturized design of the axisymmetric PPT with a thrust in the 10 micro-N range that utilizes Teflon(Trademark(sup Trademark)) as a propellant. The plasma plume is simulated using a hybrid fluid-PIC-DSMC approach. The plasma plume model is combined with Teflon(Trademark) ablation and plasma generation models that provide boundary conditions for the plume. This approach provides a consistent description of the plasma flow from the surface into the near plume. The magnetic field diffusion into the plume region is also considered and plasma acceleration by the electromagnetic mechanism is studied. Teflon(Trademark) ablation and plasma generation analyses show that file Teflon(Trademark) surface temperature and plasma parameters are strongly non-uniform in the radial direction. The plasma density near the propellant surface peaks at about 10(exp 24)/cu m in the middle of the propellant face while the electron temperature peaks at about 4 eV near the electrodes. The plume simulation shows that a dense plasma focus is developed at a few millimeters from the thruster exit plane at the axis. This plasma focus exists during the entire pulse, but the plasma density in the focus decreases from about 2x10(exp 22)/cu m at the beginning of the pulse down to 0.3x10(exp 22)/cu m at 5 microsec. The velocity phase is centered at about 20 km/s in the axial direction. At later stages of the pulse there are two ion populations with positive and negative radial velocity. Electron densities predicted by file plume model are compared with near field measurements using a Herriot Cell technique and very good agreement is obtained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulsed plasma plume diagnostic studies performed in the past have shown that considerable uncertainty exists because of the degree of backscatter encountered in ground test facilities. The large level of backscatter is attributable to the extremely high mass expulsion rate characteristic of solid propellant pulsed plasma thrusters (30 to 40 g/s on the average). The study reported upon herein had the objective of obtaining a suitable analytic model and computational scheme for calculation of the plume characteristics of a 23 mN-s pulsed plasma thruster. The calculated results were compared to experimental measurements of electron number density and temperature, obtained using specially designed Langmuir probes, only up to the point in the time when backscatter of plume effluents off the vacuum chamber walls became significant. A secondary objective of the program was to design a suitable driver circuit for the Langmuir Sangmuir probes so that a voltage ramp could be pulsed for one microsecond at any given time subsequent to thruster discharge initiation and the volt-ampere characteristic could be displayed on an XY oscilloscope.

Book excerpt: A three-year NASA/BMDO-sponsored experimental program to conduct performance and plume plasma property measurements on two Russian Stationary Plasma Thrusters (SPTs) has been completed. The program utilized experimental facilitates at the University of Michigan's Plasmadynamics and Electric Propulsion Laboratory (PEPL). The main features of the proposed effort were as follows: (1) Characterized Hall thruster (and arcjet) performance by measuring ion exhaust velocity with probes at various thruster conditions; (2) Used a variety of probe diagnostics in the thruster plume to measure plasma properties and flow properties including T(sub e) and n(sub e) ion current density and ion energy distribution, and electric fields by mapping plasma potential; (3) Used emission spectroscopy to identify species within the plume and to measure electron temperatures. A key and unique feature of our research was our collaboration with Russian Hall thruster researcher Dr. Sergey A Khartov, Deputy Dean of International Relations at the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI). His activities in this program included consulting on and participation in research at PEPL through use of a MAI-built SPT and ion energy probe. Gallimore, Alec D. Glenn Research Center NAG3-1504...

Book excerpt: An evaluation was made of the pulsed plasma thruster plume-wall backscatter characteristics of the MOLSINK facility. On the thruster axis, this backscatter drops off to zero as the angle between the axis and wall location reaches 40. This wall backscatter was found to be essentially symmetric about the plume axis. The total integrated backscatter from the MOLSINK wall is approximately equal to 5% of the total mass injected from the pulsed plasma thruster during the discharge pulse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work presented in this report is an investigation of the plasma flow on a Teflon Pulsed Plasma Thruster (PPT), and the resulting plume. The long range goal is a theoretical model of the flow, both between and beyond the thruster electrodes, that could aid in the improvement of performance, and also predict the contamination potential of the device. The overall model required consists of an internal portion interfaced with an external portion at the exit plane of the electrodes. Most of this report deals with the internal portion of the model. Specifically, the physics of the discharge and plasma acceleration between the electrodes are discussed, and a mathematical model is developed which appears to be consistant with the available experimental data. The investigation shows the necessity of certain additional information without which the model cannot be properly exercised. The validity of certain assumptions of magnetohydrodynamic theory is demonstrated for the nontypical plasma produced by the PPT, and logical consequences of the assumptions are considered vis a vis recently obtained electromagnetic data. A major difficulty in the modeling of the internal flow is the selection of the proper boundary conditions to be applied to the solution domain. These include conditions at the electrodes, the insulator, the ablating Teflon surfaces, and the interface with the vacuum ahead of, and behind, the plasma blobs. Keywords include: Pulsed plasma; Plume modeling; Teflon pulsed plasma.

Book excerpt: Pulsed plasma thrusters are currently planned on two small satellite missions and proposed for a third. In these missions, the pulsed plasma thruster's unique characteristics will be used variously to provide propulsive attitude control, orbit raising, translation, and precision positioning. Pulsed plasma thrusters are attractive for small satellite applications because they are essentially stand alone devices which eliminate the need for toxic and/or distributed propellant systems. Pulsed plasma thrusters also operate at low power and over a wide power range without loss of performance. As part of the technical development required for the noted missions, an experimental program to optimize performance with respect to electrode configuration was undertaken. One of the planned missions will use pulsed plasma thrusters for orbit raising requiring relatively high thrust and previously tested configurations did not provide this. Also, higher capacitor energies were tested than previously tried for this mission. Multiple configurations were tested and a final configuration was selected for flight hardware development. This paper describes the results of the electrode optimization in detail. Arrington, Lynn A. and Haag, Tom W. and Pencil, Eric J. and Meckel, Nicole J.
