Book excerpt: Ever since the first observation of cosmic rays over a century ago, the origins of these high-energy particles have remained a mystery. Identifying and understanding the sources of these cosmic rays could provide invaluable insight into not only astrophysics but also fundamental particle physics. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a cubic-kilometer neutrino telescope, has made remarkable progress on this front -- first with the detection of a diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux in 2013, and later with the identification of a flaring blazar as a promising neutrino source. However, the sources of the vast majority of the diffuse neutrino flux remain unidentified. The goal of this thesis is to develop tools to identify astrophysical neutrino sources with current neutrino observatories. We show how analyzing neutrino data with new techniques could reveal an immense deal about the nature of the universe's most energetic particle accelerators. First, we describe a pipeline that uses realtime data to search for neutrino emission from astrophysical transients. Next, we look for neutrino emission in the direction of IceCube alert events to constrain populations of neutrino sources. We then present the first ever search for sub-TeV neutrino emission from novae. Lastly, we search for neutrino emission coincident with ANITA neutrino candidates, and show how IceCube can search for neutrinos with energies traditionally reserved for radio neutrino detectors. All of the analyses resulted in non-detections, and we present upper-limits for each. Our results include, but are not limited to, (1) the first constraints on neutrino emission from novae, (2) the first constraints on neutrino emission from fast radio bursts at a level more constraining than the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux, (3) the first constraints on populations of day-scale transient neutrino sources, and (4) the first joint interpretation of very-high-energy optical Cherenkov neutrino data and ultra-high-energy radio neutrino data in the context of astrophysical neutrino sources. Although all of these analyses resulted in non-detections, these tools have already provided interesting constraints on the sources of high-energy neutrinos, and we are hopeful that the tools presented here will assist with the identification of cosmic neutrino sources in the years to come.

Neutrinos of cosmic origin are excellent messengers exploring astronomy, cosmology and particle physics, for they are tiny, neutral and weakly-interacting, which leads to undeflected and nearly unscathed travel across the Universe to Earth from their sources. They are an important piece in solving several significant open questions in physics such as the mystery of cosmic ray accelerators, as high-energy cosmic neutrinos play the role of a smoking-gun signal of hadronic interactions of cosmic rays; and the nature of dark matter as neutrinos can be produced in dark matter annihilation or decay, providing an indirect signature. The IceCube experiment discovered TeV-PeV neutrinos of astrophysical origin with an energy flux comparable to that of gamma rays and cosmic rays. One mission that comes afterwards is to identify where those neutrinos come from and how they are produced. In this dissertation, I will discuss the search for their astrophysical sources, emphasizing the efforts to identify neutrino sources in our Galaxy with IceCube data, focusing on pulsar wind nebulae and X-ray binaries. Like atmospheric neutrinos, the beam of cosmic neutrinos provides us with excellent opportunities to study physics beyond the standard model, e.g. dark matter annihilation and decay. Indirect searches of dark matter will be discussed with a focus on a new computation of neutrino signals from dark matter accumulated in multiple celestial environments.

The KM3NeT detector for Astroparticle Research with Cosmics in the Abyss (ARCA), is currently being built in the Mediterranean Sea. In its full configuration with > 105 photomultiplier tubes installed it will have an instrumented volume of a cubic kilometre, and excel at identifying cosmic neutrino sources due to its unprecedented angular resolution ( 0.1 degree for muon neutrinos with E 20 TeV). KM3NeT has a view of the sky complementary to IceCube, and is sensitive to neutrinos across a wide range of energies. This dissertation presents the results of the first ever performed point source search with KM3NeT/ARCA with all available processed 2021-2022 data taken with an evolving detector geometry. The analysis did not show a significant excess of neutrinos for the searched candidate sources, but as the detector will grow, and it will keep accumulating data, the sensitivity will improve very fast. Especially in the southern hemisphere, where IceCube has less sensitivity due to its position at the South Pole, KM3NeT/ARCA may add an important contribution in the future of astroparticle physics."--

Cosmic neutrinos reveal an unobstructed view at wavelengths where the universe is opaque to photons. The existence of the cosmic-neutrino flux has challenged our understanding of the universe. It is somewhat counterintuitive that the most surprising property of the observed flux is its magnitude. An immediate inference from the large neutrino flux observed by IceCube, which is predominantly extragalactic in origin, is that the total energy density of neutrinos in the high-energy universe is similar to that of photons. The matching energy densities of the extragalactic gamma-ray flux detected by Fermi and the high-energy neutrino flux measured by IceCube suggest the possibility of a common origin. Therefore, rather than detecting some exotic sources, it looks more likely that IceCube observes the same universe as astronomers do. The finding implies that a large fraction of the energy in the non-thermal universe originates in hadronic processes, indicating a larger level than previously thought. The focus of this dissertation is on identifying the sources of high-energy cosmic neutrinos observed in IceCube. Moreover, with the lack of confirmation to date of any source (type of sources) as the dominant contributor to the observed neutrino flux, we have studied prospects for observing different sources in IceCube by considering both transient and steady sources in the sky. Finally, we introduce new techniques to study the strength of neutrino dark matter interactions with the properties of high-energy cosmic neutrinos.

Book excerpt: Cosmic rays are accelerated to high energies in astrophysical objects, and create neutrinos when interacting with matter or photons. Observing a point source of high-energy astro-physical neutrinos would therefore be a smoking gun signature of cosmic ray acceleration. While evidence for a diffuse flux of astrophysical neutrinos was recently found, the origin of this flux is not yet known. We present three analyses searching for neutrino point sources with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a cubic kilometer Cherenkov detector located at the geographic South Pole. The analyses target astrophysical sources emitting neutrinos of all flavors, and cover energies from TeV to EeV. The first analysis searches point source emission of muon neutrinos using throughgoing muon tracks. The second analysis searches for spatial clustering among high-energy astrophysical neutrino candidate events, and is sensitive to neutrinos of all three flavors. The third analysis selects starting track events, muon neutrinos with interactions vertices inside the detector, to lower the energy threshold in the southern hemisphere. In each analysis, an un-binned likelihood method tests for spatial clustering of events anywhere in the sky as well as for neutrinos correlated with known gamma-ray sources. All results are consistent with the background-only hypothesis, and the resulting upper limits on E-2 neutrino emission are the most stringent throughout the entire sky. In the northern hemisphere, the upper limits are beginning to constrain emission models. In the southern hemisphere, the upper limits in the 100 TeV energy range are an order of magnitude lower than previous IceCube results, but are not yet probing predicted flux levels. By comparing the point source limits to the observed diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux, we also constrain the minimum number of neutrino sources and investigate the properties of potential source populations contributing to the diffuse flux. Additionally, an a posteriori analysis of one of the highest energy starting track events determined it to be a 2.8 sigma fluctuation above the atmospheric background expectation. While a single event is not indicative of a point source, this is the most significant well-localized astrophysical neutrino candidate yet observed.

Book excerpt: Annihilation of extremely energetic cosmic neutrinos on the relic-neutrino background can give rise to absorption lines at energies corresponding to formation of the electroweak gauge boson Z°. The positions of the absorption dips are set by the masses of the relic neutrinos. Suitably intense sources of extremely energetic (1021 - 1025-eV) cosmic neutrinos might therefore enable the determination of the absolute neutrino masses and the flavor composition of the mass eigenstates. Several factors--other than neutrino mass and composition--distort the absorption lines, however. We analyze the influence of the time-evolution of the relic-neutrino density and the consequences of neutrino decay. We consider the sensitivity of the lineshape to the age and character of extremely energetic neutrino sources, and to the thermal history of the Universe, reflected in the expansion rate. We take into account Fermi motion arising from the thermal distribution of the relic-neutrino gas. We also note the implications of Dirac vs. Majorana relics, and briefly consider unconventional neutrino histories. We ask what kinds of external information would enhance the potential of cosmic-neutrino absorption spectroscopy, and estimate the sensitivity required to make the technique a reality.

These and many other interesting questions can be investigated at stopped pion neutrino facilities like the one planned for the Spallation Neutron Source at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.The purpose of the Carolina Symposium was twofold: (1) to explore and exchange ideas on the latest developments in general frontiers of neutrino physics and related fields; (2) to address specific issues pertaining to the above-mentioned stopped pion neutrino facility. Among the topics covered in the proceedings are: cosmology and neutrino; standard model tests with neutrinos; neutrino oscillation, experiments and theories; dark matter search; double beta-decay; rare events detection techniques; the solar neutrino problem; supernova explosion; nucleosynthesis; and the ORLaND project.
