They exhibit unique mechanical, thermal, and electronic properties. Metallic glasses are stronger than regular metals while being as pliable as plastics, but their wide-spread technological adoption is hindered by our poor understanding of their atomic ordering. Organic glasses have applications ranging from electronics to pharmaceuticals. Glasses lack long-range order, and their properties are mediated by nano-scale ordering. Experimental characterization of glassy structures is incredibly challenging due to the awesome complexity of their nanostructures and a lack of characterization techniques that can probe the local ordering and structural relaxation processes with nanometer-scale spatial resolution. Characterization techniques based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) probe the structure and dynamics of such systems with nanometer-scale spatial resolution. Structural studies on metallic and organic glasses using 4-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D STEM) reveal varying length scales of ordering in these systems and their impact on physical properties, at unprecedented spatial resolution. Electron correlation microscopy (ECM) analysis on time-resolved in situ thermal annealed TEM data lets us study glassy dynamics and reveals spatially heterogeneous dynamics in the bulk and at the surface of metallic glass nanowires. The techniques developed, and the mechanisms of structural ordering and relaxation dynamics revealed in these investigations, have implications on the synthesis, processing, and characterization of glassy systems with controlled thermal, electronic and mechanical properties, including growth of ultrastable metallic glass phases and molecular glasses with tunable structural anisotropy for organic electronics applications, fabrication of glassy nanostructures by superplastic forming, and control of surface crystallization.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the application of computational homology for structural analysis of metallic glasses. Metallic glasses, relatively new materials in the field of metals, are the next-generation structural and functional materials owing to their excellent properties. To understand their properties and to develop novel metallic glass materials, it is necessary to uncover their atomic structures which have no periodicity, unlike crystals. Although many experimental and simulation studies have been performed to reveal the structures, it is extremely difficult to perceive a relationship between structures and properties without an appropriate point of view, or language. The purpose here is to show how a new approach using computational homology gives a useful insight into the interpretation of atomic structures. It is noted that computational homology has rapidly developed and is now widely applied for various data analyses. The book begins with a brief basic survey of metallic glasses and computational homology, then goes on to the detailed procedures and interpretation of computational homology analysis for metallic glasses. Understandable and readable information for both materials scientists and mathematicians is also provided.

The unique disordered structure of metallic glasses leads to unique mechanical properties, such as inhomogeneous deformation at low temperature and homogeneous deformation at high temperature, and brittle behavior induced by annealing. This dissertation address three critical issues related to the mechanical behavior of metallic glasses: 1. Identification of deformation defects in metallic glasses. We have conducted high energy X-ray diffraction experiment -- using anisotropic pair distribution function -- to characterize the size and density of defects in metallic glasses activated by external stresses. Our results based on the characterization method reveal the microscopic origin of ductility in some metallic glasses. 2. Identification of two local stress relaxation modes that control macroscopic mechanical properties in metallic glasses. Using the defect characterization method we developed, we revealed two different local stress relaxation modes in defect regions, which are responsible for inhomogeneous and homogeneous deformation respectively. 3. We developed structural rejuvenation method to improve and recover the compressive plasticity. The microscopic mechanism of structural rejuvenation was unveiled by structural study and molecular dynamics simulation.

Book excerpt: Physical vapor deposition, a common route of thin film fabrication for organic electronic devices, has recently been shown to produce organic glassy films with enhanced kinetic stability and anisotropic structure. Anisotropic structures are of interest in the organic electronics community as it has been shown that certain structures lead to enhanced device performance, such as higher carrier mobility and better light outcoupling. A mechanism proposed to explain the origin of the stability and anisotropy of vapor-deposited glasses relies on two parameters: 1) enhanced molecular mobility at the free surface (vacuum interface) of a glass, and 2) anisotropic molecular packing at the free surface of the supercooled liquid of the glass-forming system. By vapor-depositing onto a substrate maintained at Tsubstrate

They lack long-range order and microstructural defects that are characteristics in crystals, such as grain and phase boundaries and dislocations. These new materials have demonstrated very interesting structural and mechanical properties derived from their homogeneity in composition and the absence of grain boundaries. Structural, mechanical or chemical properties, among others, may be even superior to those observed in conventional metallic alloys, and therefore attracted great scientific and technological interest. In this thesis project three different families of metallic glasses were selected to achieve a better understanding of amorphous alloys. First, a Ce-based alloy has been used to analyze a polyamorphic transition upon application of pressure to a more densely packed structure. X-ray diffraction and inelastic x-ray scattering data show a polyamorphic transition in the 2-10 GPa range, and this transition presents a hysteresis cycle between both compression and decompression data. The effect of this transition on mechanical properties is then evaluated. Second, a family of Fe-based metallic glasses, or amorphous steels, was selected to study their mechanical and electrochemical properties as a function of the structure and composition. The composition of the base alloy was first modified by addition of Yttrium in different concentrations as microalloying element and the structure was changed by thermal annealing, forming intermediate crystal/amorphous composites, up to a complete crystallization state. Finally, an entirely new alloy for biocompatible purposes has been designed, synthesized, and characterized. The basic structural characterization of this new Zr-Ti based amorphous alloy shows that is possible to produce the amorphous state in an alloy that does not contain toxic or unhealthy elements.

Book excerpt: This thesis consists of an in-depth study of investigating microstructure-property relationships in bulk metallic glasses using a novel quantitative approach by which influence of the second phase features on mechanical properties can be independently and systematically analyzed. The author evaluates and optimizes the elastic and plastic deformation, as well as the overall toughness of cellular honeycombs under in-plane compression and porous heterostructures under uniaxial tension. The study reveals three major deformation zones in cellular metallic glass structures, where deformation changes from collective buckling showing non-linear elasticity to localized failure exhibiting a brittle-like deformation, and finally to global sudden failure with negligible plasticity as the length to thickness ratio of the ligaments increases. The author found that spacing and size of the pores, the pore configuration within the matrix, and the overall width of the sample determines the extent of deformation, where the optimized values are attained for pore diameter to spacing ratio of one with AB type pore stacking.

A noncrystalline solid produced by continuous cooling from the liquid state is known as a glass. From the other point of view, a noncrystalline material, obtained by any other process, for example, vapor deposition or solid-state processing methods such as mechanical alloying, but not directly from the liquid state, is referred to as an amorphous material. At this moment, bulk metallic glasses (BMG) are appearing as a new class of metallic materials with unique physical and mechanical properties for structural and functional usage. Extreme values of strength, fracture toughness, magnetic properties, corrosion resistance, and other properties have been registered in BMG materials.

Book excerpt: Structure-property correlations are invaluable expertise to advance materials' technologies since well-designed materials offer a serious competitive edge, and robust failure analyses complement process improvements. This thesis invokes structure-property interrelationships with a focus on improving materials' performance for industrial adoption of various technologically important systems. In chapter 4, we studied the structure and properties of Zr-Cu-Al thin films synthesized by magnetron sputtering as a function of deposition parameters. In chapter 5, we investigated the structure, mechanical properties and scratch behavior in single-layered and multilayered amorphous carbon thin films made by NCD Technologies' proprietary vapor deposition method. In chapter 6, we presented a case study to identify the failure mode of upper copper weld wheels in an industrial production line which had a much shorter lifetime than the lower electrode. Vapor deposition forms metallic glasses with novel thermodynamic and kinetic stabilities unachievable through conventional routes. In chapter 4, kinetic stability in Zr-Cu-Al metallic glass thin films, indicated by their glass transition temperature, was widely varied by changing deposition rate at constant temperature. The most kinetically stable film's reduced modulus was 22[percent] higher than a glass of the same composition quenched from the liquid by melt spinning, suggesting increased density and improved thermodynamic stability. Fluctuation electron microscopy and angular correlations studies performed using coherent electron nanodiffraction attributed enhanced stability in glasses to increased nanoscale structural order at the medium range length scale, especially of icosahedral nature. Our results indicated that increased nanoscale icosahedral order contributed to resistance of glass to both glass transition and mechanical deformation. In chapter 5, the elastic modulus and hardness in single-layered amorphous carbon films were improved up to as much as 35 and 30 [percent] respectively by varying the applied bias voltage and pulse width. Film structure measured by Raman spectroscopy showed that the maxima in mechanical properties due to bias voltage was correlated to highest sp3 fraction, highest sp2 disorder and overall lowest disorder. Based on single-layer results, multilayers were developed. Nanoindentation and scratch-testing revealed that while multilayering preserved high hardness and improved friction behavior irrespective of the recipe, the scratch volume was strongly correlated with hardness.
