Book excerpt: Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films have good electro-optical properties suitable for opto-electronic applications. The present study explains the deposition and characterization of n-type and p-type ZnO thin films by spray pyrolysis. The films were characterized by different methods to understand their structural, optical and electrical properties. Gallium was chosen as the impurity dopant in ZnO films to improve the electrical properties. The electrical conductivity, carrier concentration and mobility of Ga doped ZnO (GZO) films were highly improved in comparison to undoped ZnO films. The GZO films showed good optical transmittance in the visible region. The electrical and optical results suggest that the GZO films are suitable to use as a TCO in optoelectronic industries. The p-type ZnO thin films were successesfully realized using dual acceptor method. The Hall measurements and room temperature photolumiscence results were supported p-type nature of (Li, N): ZnO thin films.

Book excerpt: Research about the growth of nanostructures on various semiconductor materials is an emerging and most burning field in all over the world with wide spread applicability in crystal photonics and lithography. In order to change the surface morphology as well as optical properties of semiconductor materials, an electron beam of high energy at a constant dose was used to get the required results (Despite of Ion beam irradiation, Doping and Annealing etc). Due to structural changes and modifications various kinds of periodic nanostructures were observed. Also due to tunable band gap of Zinc Oxide we were able to get maximum absorption in the visible region of electromagnetic spectrum. It is too much useful in photonics to replace the Gallium Arsenide LEDs because our sample that can emit light in visible region. This book has been written in a clear and concise manner with the extensive use of annotated text as well as coloured images and micrographs. It covers all the compulsory relevant topics and applications. In writing this book, I have generous help from my respected teacher as Co-Author (Dr. Khurram Siraj) who has provided kind suggestions to materialized this book.

Book excerpt: The II - VI semiconductors, such as Zinc Sulphide (ZnS) have attracted growing interest owing to their possible application in electro-optic device, it is important semiconductor material for the development of various modern technologies of solid - state devices. Zinc Sulphide have wide direct band gap of about (3.50 -4.1) eV in the UV region; it is used as a key material for blue light emitting diodes and other optoelectronic devices such as cathodluminescent displays, multilayer dielectric filters, electroluminescent displays and multilayer dielectric filters. Zinc Sulpide is highly studied as a window layer in hetrojunction photovoltaic solar cells because the wide band decreases the window absorption loss and improve the short circuit current of the cell. In the area of optics ZnS can be used as reflector, because of it's high visible range. There have been various studies on the bulk and thin film characteristics of ZnS including optical and electrical properties. Zinc sulfide has two types of crystal structures; hexagonal wurtzite and cubic zinc blende, it has a cubic crystal structure in its most stable state.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The review of the effect of annealing and doping zinc oxide thin films on both the structural and optical properties has been carried out for different growth techniques such as sol,Äìgel growth technique. The structural and optical properties were carried out using thin films were characterized SEM, XRD while TE and TM guided mode spectra, UV,ÄìVIS,ÄìNIR (HR4000Ocean Optics) and UV,ÄìVisible spectrometry were used accordingly respectively. From the results, it was clearly observed the both the morphological and the crystal characteristics structural characteristic, although increase in the percent of doping element affected it as the diffraction peak was shifts slightly to a lower angle side with report that crystal structure of the film deteriorate at a higher doping concentration of doping element as it decreases the c-lattice. There was also adjustment on the band gap of the material when it was annealed at various temperatures and also when the doping concentration was varied. The film exhibited lower absorbance, high transmittance depend on the regions of electromagnetic wave spectra.

Book excerpt: Zinc oxide is one of the most candidate materials using in the detecting and sensing fields, physical properties such as structural, optical and electrical properties has been studied by so many researchers. This book provides an insight on the basic physical properties, [structural (as crystallite size, integral breadth, micro strain and dislocation density), optical (as transmittance absorption coefficient, extinction coefficient and energy gap), electrical (as dark and illuminated I-V characteristics)]. This book focuses on the principles of two main sensing methods, chemical and piezoelectrical. The mechanism and characterization for chemical vapors and gas sensing has been explained, also it contain the basic and simple demonstration of set-up for mechanical waves sensing depending on the some parameters as resonance frequency, band width, quality factor, damping coefficient and surface acoustic wave velocity (SAW). Finally the book shows those metal oxides especially ZnO can be used as a biomedical, mechanical or any other industrial or environmental sensors.

Book excerpt: Versatility, extended compositional ranges, better homogeneity, lesser energy consumption, and requirement of nonexpensive equipments have boosted the use of sol-gel process on top of the popularity in the synthesis of nanosystems. The sol-gel technique has not only revolutionized oxide ceramics industry and/or material science but has also extended widely into multidimensional applications. The book Recent Applications in Sol-Gel Synthesis comprises 14 chapters that deal mainly with the application-oriented aspects of the technique. Sol-gel prepared metal oxide (MO) nanostructures like nanospheres, nanorods, nanoflakes, nanotubes, and nanoribbons have been employed in biomedical applications involving drug deliveries, mimicking of natural bone, and antimicrobial activities. The possibility of controlling grain size in aerogel and preparation of ultrahigh-temperature ceramic (UHTC)-based materials, fluorescent glasses, ultraviolet photosensors, and photocatalysts have been discussed in detail by the experts in the field. The usefulness of sol-gel materials as active GRIN, as textile finisher, and as leather modifier with water-repellent and oil-resistive properties would be an incentive for researchers keen to pursue the field.

The book starts by providing an introduction to the fundamental optical spectra of solids. The text then discusses Maxwell's equations and the dielectric function; absorption and dispersion; and the theory of free-electron metals. The quantum mechanical theory of direct and indirect transitions between bands; the applications of dispersion relations; and the derivation of an expression for the dielectric function in the self-consistent field approximation are also encompassed. The book further tackles current-current correlations; the fluctuation-dissipation theorem; and the effect of surface plasmons on optical properties and photoemission. People involved in the study of the optical properties of solids will find the book invaluable.
