Book excerpt: This dissertation presents findings on the preparation and characterization of silica nanosprings (NS) supported Fe and Co catalysts for Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reactions. Silica NS with a high surface area of 400 m2/g were chosen as a new 1-dimensional nanostructured support for Fe and Co based FT catalysts and divided into three sections. Section 1 involved the preparation and characterization of Co/NS catalysts as well as to examine the effects of two different reduction temperatures on the FT catalytic performance of this Co/NS catalyst. The prepared Co/NS catalysts were characterized before the FT reaction by various analytical techniques such as surface area, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy , energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, temperature programmed reduction (CO and H2), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The activity and selectivity of all catalysts were evaluated in a quartz fixed bed micro-reactor (H2/CO of 2:1, 230-270 °C). The effect of reaction temperature on the catalytic performance of Co/NS catalyst was studied. The results showed that the catalyst reduced at a temperature of 609 °C had higher production rate of C6-C17 hydrocarbons than the catalyst reduced at 409 °C. It also was found that the Co/NS catalyst resulted in more stability compared to with conventional catalysts. Section 2 examined the effect of three preparation techniques (impregnation, precipitation and 2-step sol-gel) and activation conditions (H2, CO or H2+CO) on catalytic performance of these Fe/NS catalysts. It was found that the Fe/NS catalyst prepared by impregnation technique and activated with CO displayed the highest CO conversion (76.6%) and a wide distribution of light hydrocarbon (C6 to C14). Moreover, the XRD and XPS results of Fe/NS catalysts showed three different Fe crystalline phases with different particle sizes. Section 3 examined the addition of Ru, Mo, Co and Cu as promoters on the Fe/NS catalysts. It was found that the promotion of the Fe catalyst supported on NS with Ru, Mo, Co and Cu increased the CO conversion, shifted the FTS product distributions and improved the selectivity towards C6-C16 olefins instead of aromatics in unpromoted Fe/NS catalyst. New types of Co and Fe catalysts were synthetized using silica nanosprings (NS) as a new 1-dimensional nanostructured support, and used in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. By using these catalysts, good activity, selectivity to C6-C16 hydrocarbons (liquid fuels) and catalytic stability have been achieved. Furthermore, the incorporation of promoters, such as Ru, Mo, Co and Cu, into these catalysts can have effect leading to both high conversion and selectivity.

Book excerpt: The effect of ammonia in syngas on the performance of various supported cobalt catalysts (i.e., Al2O3, TiO2 and SiO2) was investigated during Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) using a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The addition of ammonia (10 ppmv NH3) caused a significant deactivation for all supported cobalt catalysts, but the rate of deactivation was higher for the silica-supported catalysts relative to the alumina and titania-supported catalysts used in this work. Ammonia addition had a positive effect on product selectivity (i.e., lower light gas products and higher C5+) for alumina and titania-supported catalysts compared to ammonia free conditions, whereas, the addition of ammonia increased lighter hydrocarbon (C1-C4) products and decreased higher hydrocarbon (C5+) selectivity compared to ammonia-free synthesis conditions for the silica-supported catalyst. For alumina and titania-supported catalysts, the activity almost recovered with mild in-situ hydrogen treatment of the ammonia exposed catalysts. For the silica-supported catalyst, the loss of activity is somewhat irreversible (i.e., cannot be regained after the mild hydrogen treatment). Addition of ammonia led to a significant loss in BET surface area and changes in pore diameter (consistent with pore collapse of a fraction of pores into the microporous range as described in the literature), as well as formation of catalytically inactive cobalt support compounds for the silica-supported catalyst. On the other hand, the pore characteristics of alumina and titania-supported catalysts were not significantly changed. In conclusion, XANES results of the ammonia exposed silica-supported catalysts further confirm the formation of cobalt-support compounds (cobalt silicates).

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to compare the characterization of SBA-15 and TiO2 supported cobalt catalyst for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis based on effect of cobalt loading. In order to complete this research, the catalyst must be prepared by incipient wetness impregnation method. The catalysts were prepared with different cobalt loading, which are 5%, 10% and 15% and using zinc as a promoter. To characterize these catalysts, different methods were used. First of all, characterization of SBA-15 and TiO2 were compared by using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Then the catalysts were tested using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Through this characterization, the surface of catalysts was compared. The surface structure of Co/SBA-15 is more ordered when compared to Co/TiO2 catalyst. This is compared by the SEM image taken. Therefore, Co/TiO2 is also a good catalyst with advantages when compared to Co/SBA-15 catalyst. The conclusion of this research when comparing the characterization of Co/SBA-15 and TiO2 catalysts, is Co/SBA-15 catalyst is a good catalyst when compared to Co/TiO2 catalyst.

Book excerpt: The work exposed in this manuscript concerns the study of the intrinsic activity and localization of active sites in cobalt and iron based catalysts using a combination of transient kinetic methods such as SSITKA, extended physicochemical characterization and catalytic tests under quasi steady state conditions. Promotion of iron catalysts with metals used for soldering (Bi and Pb) results a remarkable increase in the light olefin production rate with the possibility to conduct Fischer-Tropsch synthesis at very mild reaction conditions (low pressure) and even at atmospheric pressure. Transient kinetic experiments showed facilitation of CO dissociation in the presence of promoters by scavenging O atoms from iron carbide. Cobalt catalyst supported by mordenite zeolite presented higher value of SSITKA rate constant. Localization of cobalt active sites in bifunctional cobalt-zeolite catalysts has a major impact on the reaction rate and in particular on the hydrocarbon selectivity. A proximity between the cobalt active site and Bronsted active sites was found to be a key parameter to obtain higher selectivity and yield of isomerized hydrocarbons. SSITKA combined with catalyst characterization revealed that carbon deposition and cobalt nanoparticle agglomeration were responsible for the deactivation of silica supported cobalt catalysts. Catalyst rejuvenation in hydrogen lessened the amounts of deposited carbon species and partially released the most active sites of carbon monoxide dissociative adsorption and stronger sites of carbon monoxide reversible adsorption.

Book excerpt: Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is one of the most promising ways for the conversion of syngas to hydrocarbon products. Supported cobalt is the preferred catalyst for FTS due to its high selectivity to heavy hydrocarbons, low activity for water-gas-shift reaction and comparatively low price. Cobalt loaded SBA-15 catalysts were prepared by two different techniques including wetness impregnation and direct-synthesis methods. The characterization of the synthesized samples was done by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and N2 adsorption-desorption,. XRD measurements showed that the calcined cobalt catalyst did not modify the structure of SBA-15, proving that Co was present under the form of Co3O4 in the catalyst. The hexagonal structure of pores of SBA-15 was confirmed by SEM images for all samples.BET surface area showed that Co/SBA-15 catalyst prepared by direct synthesis method was produced high surface area and pore volume compared prepared by wetness impregnation method.

Book excerpt: This indispensable handbook provides comprehensive coverage of the current state-of-the-art in inorganic, organic, and composite aerogels – from synthesis and characterization to cutting-edge applications and their potential market impact. Built upon Springer’s successful Aerogels Handbook published in 2011, this handbook features extensive revisions and timely updates, reflecting the changes in this fast-growing field. Aerogels are the lightest solids known to man. Up to 1000 times lighter than glass and with a density only four times that of air, they possess extraordinarily high thermal, electrical, and acoustic insulation properties, and boast numerous entries in Guinness World Records. Originally based on silica, R&D efforts have extended this class of materials to incorporate non-silicate inorganic oxides, natural and synthetic organic polymers, carbon, metal, and ceramic materials. Composite systems involving polymer-crosslinked aerogels and interpenetrating hybrid networks have been developed and exhibit remarkable mechanical strength and flexibility. Even more exotic aerogels based on clays, chalcogenides, phosphides, quantum dots, and biopolymers such as chitosan are opening new applications for the construction, transportation, energy, defense and healthcare industries. Applications in electronics, chemistry, mechanics, engineering, energy production and storage, sensors, medicine, nanotechnology, military and aerospace, oil and gas recovery, thermal insulation, and household uses are being developed. Readers of this fully updated and expanded edition will find an exhaustive source for all aerogel materials known today, their fabrication, upscaling aspects, physical and chemical properties, and the most recent advances towards applications and commercial use. This key reference is essential reading for a combined audience of graduate students, academic researchers, and industry professionals.

Book excerpt: The research was about the synthesis of active and selective for syngas processing via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) producing clean and best fuel. A series of 20 wt. % cobalt catalysts be prepared by impregnation of a mesoporous molecular sieve based on silica as 75 wt. % of cobalt catalytic supporters (SBA-15, TiO and CabO-Sil) with 5 wt. % Zn promoter for comparison purposes. All materials used characterizing by several analysis equipments which are SEM, TGA and FTIR. The characterization results achieve gave a great influence of mesoporous support porosity on the structure, reducibility of cobalt oxide species supported over the selected materials. Firstly, the experiment was started from the synthesis of SBA-15. TiO2 and Cab-O-Sil are commercialized support. Then, the silica as cobalt supporters were synthesized by incipient wetness impregnation method of using mixture of Cobalt (II) Nitrate and Zinc Nitrate Hexahydrate solution. Next, the prepared catalysts were calcined at 350°C for 6 h by increasing the temperature at a controlled heating rate of 2°C/min. The characterization of catalysts and catalyst studies was performed. The result from experiment was SBA-15 supporter shown the better result compared to other samples as the microscopic size captured by SEM equipment prove that SBA-15 had smoothest and smallest of mesoporous surface size. The result from FTIR showed that the peak at around 3,440 cm-1 have the hydroxyl groups and about 1,630 cm -12 is due to the bending vibrations of O-H bonds that the percentage reflectance of O-H bonds which indicates the SBA-15 can effectively restrain the loss of surface hydroxyl groups during calcinations. The peak around 1000-1200 cm1 can be assigned to the siloxane or Si-O-Si stretching bands; peak appears as a broad and strong peaking the sample. Lastly, TGA result showed that SBA-15 can help the catalyst samples restrained more water content in the evaporation process and had high thermal stability that can prolong life at high temperature and high pressure in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The new silica as cobalt supporter will be developed to enhance the performance of the best and clean fuel production. This research hopefully can be carried out successful in order to get the new invention for production of catalyst that will produce the best and clean fuel and to get rid of exceed cost of production but in the same quality of expensive product.
