Book Synopsis Mechanical Properties of Polymers Measured through AFM Force-Distance Curves by : Brunero Cappella
Download or read book Mechanical Properties of Polymers Measured through AFM Force-Distance Curves written by Brunero Cappella and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-14 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Springer Laboratory volume is a practical guide for scientists and students dealing with the measurement of mechanical properties of polymers at the nanoscale through AFM force-distance curves. In the first part of the book the reader will find a theoretical introduction about atomic force microscopy, focused on force-distance curves, and mechanical properties of polymers. The discussion of several practical issues concerning the acquisition and the interpretation of force-distance curves will help scientists starting to employ this technique. The second part of the book deals with the practical measurement of mechanical properties of polymers by means of AFM force-distance curves. Several "hands-on" examples are illustrated in a very detailed manner, with particular attention to the sample preparation, data analysis, and typical artefacts. This section gives a complete overview about the qualitative characterization and quantitative determination of the mechanical properties of homogeneous polymer samples, polymer brushes, polymer thin films, confined polymer samples, model blends and microstructured polymer blends through AFM force-distance curves. The book also introduces to new approaches and measurement techniques, like creep compliance and force modulation measurements, pointing out approximations, limitations and issues requiring further confirmation.

Book Synopsis Physical Properties of Polymers by : A.A. Askadski
Download or read book Physical Properties of Polymers written by A.A. Askadski and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-12-17 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New polymeric substances and materials with new, often unusual properties arise frequently. This volume presents a problem in determining the physical properties of polymers and thus makes it difficult to tackle the question of the synthesis of polymers with desired properties. The author has approached this problem in a semi-empirical manner, which like van Krevelen's empirical method is based on the principle of increment and deriving calculations from it, but in Askadskii's approach each equation for the calculation of properties is physically based, and its parameters are connected with characteristics of atoms (Van-der-Waals volume, dispersonic interaction) which compose the reoccurring unit of polymer, as well as with characteristics of energy of intermolecular interaction. Particular attention is paid to the relaxation of properties of polymers, which determine the mechanical serviceability of materials.

Book Synopsis Characterization of Single Polymer Molecules by : Milad Radiom
Download or read book Characterization of Single Polymer Molecules written by Milad Radiom and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter offers an overview of the use of atomic force microscopy (AFM) in polymer studies. Soft AFM cantilevers with sharp tips are useful for their relatively high spatial resolution, a few nm, and force resolution, a few tens of pN. AFM imaging is used to characterize conformational properties of single polymer chains at solid-liquid interfaces. AFM force microscopy gives molecular elasticity as well as interaction forces of single polymer chains with solids. Recent technical developments have made possible the characterization of time-resolved mechanical properties of single polymer chains, including the relaxation time and internal friction. AFM force microscopy with biomolecules, supramolecules, and mechanophores reveals the forces required for, and the kinetics of, conformational transitions and chemical reactions in these molecules at the single-chain and single bond levels.

Book Synopsis Mechanical Properties and Testing of Polymers by : G.M. Swallowe
Download or read book Mechanical Properties and Testing of Polymers written by G.M. Swallowe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-11-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a continuation of the Polymer Science and Technology series edited by Dr. D. M. Brewis and Professor D. Briggs. The theme of the series is the production of a number of stand alone volumes on various areas of polymer science and technology. Each volume contains short articles by a variety of expert contributors outlining a particular topic and these articles are extensively cross referenced. References to related topics included in the volume are indicated by bold text in the articles, the bold text being the title of the relevant article. At the end of each article there is a list of bibliographic references where interested readers can obtain further detailed information on the subject of the article. This volume was produced at the invitation of Derek Brewis who asked me to edit a text which concentrated on the mechanical properties of polymers. There are already many excellent books on the mechanical properties of polymers, and a somewhat lesser number of volumes dealing with methods of carrying out mechanical tests on polymers. Some of these books are listed in Appendix 1. In this volume I have attempted to cover basic mechanical properties and test methods as well as the theory of polymer mechanical deformation and hope that the reader will find the approach useful.
