Fine powder coating can overcome this drawback since the smaller powder particles lead to much smoother finish. Nevertheless, fine powder has been experienced to cause more application problems. This study investigated fine powder coatings from different aspects and it provided solutions to solve these application problems. The investigation on fine powders conducted by this study concluded that the medium particle size and D10 was not suitable for the flowability characterization of fine powder coatings. Instead, an index which represented the particle size distribution could correlate with the flowabilities of the fine powder coatings much better. In addition, several processing methods were developed for the production of fine powder coatings. The experiments disclosed that the revised designs of the cyclone and the grinder could obtain narrower particle size distribution of the powder coatings, which was desired. In addition, other performances of the processes were not sacrificed. The spraying method of powder coatings was also investigated in this study. The additional moisture on the surfaces of the fine powder particles was found to reduce the resistivity of the powder so as to enhance the transfer efficiency during the corona spraying. On the other hand, a new spray gun design with alternative charging pattern could reduce the Faraday Cage effect during corona spraying of fine powders. In addition, it also showed large potential on improving the transfer efficiency of coarse powders. Finally, new processing techniques for functional powder coatings were developed. Utilization of dry blended catalysts could solve the problems of pre-curing and short shelf life associated with the conventional low-cure powder coatings. Other than that, the complicated heat-blending process for processing metallic color powder coatings can be replaced by a new bonding technique with utilization of liquid bonder. The strong bond between powder particles and metallic pigments provided by this new technique can solve the recyclability problem of the metallic color powder coatings during spraying. The discoveries from the thesis study contribute to further understandings of powder coatings. This study also provides useful suggestions for future developments of powder coating technologies.

Book excerpt: This book covers the rich phenomenology exhibited by fine powders when they are fluidized by a gas flow. Fine powder cohesiveness leads to poor flowability, clumping, difficulty in fluidizing, irregular avalanching behavior, etc. Despite all the inconveniences, fine powder processes pervade the chemical, pharmaceutical, agricultural and mining industries among others. The author in this book analyzes the mechanism by which interparticle adhesive forces are reduced by means of surface additives. Different techniques have been developed in the last years to assist fluidization by helping the gas flow to mobilize and break cohesive aggregates, which help to homogenize fluidization. As reviewed in this book, the use of these techniques may have a relevant impact on novel processes based on fluidized beds of fine powder and with relevant applications on leading edge technologies such as Atomic Layer Deposition on nanoparticles and CO2 capture by gas-fluidized beds of adsorbent powders. The study of fluidized beds has a marked interdisciplinary character. This book is thus intended for academic and industrial researchers in applied physics, mechanical, chemical, and environmental engineering, who are interested in the special characteristics of fine powders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characterization of fine particles is a difficult task! A large number of industries deal with materials in powder form. The properties of these powders depend on their particle size, particle shape and size distributions, surface and porosity. What are the methods? What are the problems? What questions need answering? This new book covers the problems of sampling both powders and aerosols, and discusses calibration standards for different instruments. It takes into account fractionating methods for fine particles, e.g., sieving procedures, sedimentation methods, and the use of cyclones. Image analysis and its use for the measurement of the size and shape of powder grains and light-diffraction techniques for size evaluation are presented. Furthermore, this books covers the most effective methods for measuring surface areas, fractal structures of rough surfaces, and pore structures of porous bodies. Practitioners will find tips for modification of analytical procedures for on-line characterization, and many graphs for comparing data obtained by different methods are presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: flour, potato starch, cracking catalyst, sand, and gravel, one will probably agree that the first four materials definitely are powders and the last one certainly is not. Whether one would call sand a powder probably depends on the partiele size and on personal Vlews. When the astronaut Neil Armstrong returned to the Earth from his trip on the surface of the Moon, he stated: 'The surface is fine and powdery. I can kick it up loosely with my toe. It does adhere in fine layers like powdered charcoal to the sole and inside of my boots. I only go in a small fraction of an inch, but I can see the footprints of my boots and the treads in the fine sandy partieles. ' These words elearly show that the behaviour of powders de pends on the circumstances. In wh at respects are those on the Moon different from those on the Earth? (1) The gravitational force on the surface of the Moon is only one-sixth of that on the Earth. (2) There is no gas on the Moon. The latter aspect means that any water brought there would evaporate and disappear immediately, hence powders on the Moon will always be perfect1y dry so that cohesion between the separate partieles due to liquid bridges will be zero.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Powder coating is a dry coating technology competing with conventional liquid coatings and offers many benefits such as the elimination of volatile organic compounds, high efficiency of material usage and improved coating durability. However, the rough and thick film surface restricts its wide application. The fine powder coating, which can solve the film quality issues, also has its own limitation: the powder is too cohesive to handle. Although, nanoparticle flow additives can significantly improve the flowability of fine powders, it leads to another obstacle at the same time. Since the inorganic nano additives are not fully compatible with the organic fine powder coating materials during the curing process, the agglomerates formed by nanoparticles can result in film defects such as seeds and pinholes, as well as the reduction of gloss. A technology of encapsulating polymer resins on the surface of nano silica additive is used for this work. By modifying the surface of the inorganic additives, the compatibility issues are expected to be solved while the effect of additive on flowabilities remains. The modified additives were prepared by encapsulating commercial nano silica additives with 2 organic materials, polyester or hybrid, in 4 different Resin-to-Encapsulated Additive ratios (R-EA ratios) and evaluated by TEM. The additives were incorporated into fine coating powders in 4 different additive loading ratios (LOAs). All of the 40 samples were tested by flow property measurements to obtain their angle of repose (for semi-static flow property) and avalanche angle (for dynamic flow property). The results show that with a suitable R-EA ratio and additive loading ratio, the powder sample performs better with improved semi-static and dynamic flow properties. And the optimum R-EA ratios and LOAs were suggested for specific applications. For each powder samples, three panels were sprayed with an electrostatic method and all of the 120 coated panels were evaluated by measuring gloss and the number of seeds on the film surface. Some panels were evaluated by a roughness profiler. The results show that coating films from the samples with modified additives have higher gloss, lower roughness and less seeds on the surface.
