Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microwave performance of an avalanche transit-time diode as an oscillator and amplifier is examined. Small- and large-signal characteristics of avalanche silicon p-n junction diode have extensively and quantitatively been investigated. The experimental system and techniques for measuring the pulse-operated avalanche diode admittance are described. Results of diode admittance and diode Q factor are presented. The nonlinearity and broad frequency range of negative diode admittance are identified. The experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical analyses. The avalanche diode can be represented by an equivalent circuit consisting of a negative conductance in parallel with a capacitive susceptance. Both real and imaginary parts of the diode admittance are bias, frequency, and oscillatory amplitude dependent. These dependencies are described on the basis of experimental results. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large-signal experimental study was made on the wave shapes and phase relations of the current in an avalanching silicon diode excited by an external microwave signal source under different conditions of current bias. The objective of this study was to obtain information helpful in the understanding of the factors determining the operating efficiency of microwave avalanche transit-time diode oscillators. The experiments were conducted at 760 MHz on diodes that normally oscillated at 10 GHz so that the transit-time effects in the drift zone of the diode were negligible and so that displacement currents in the diode could be reduced to the same order of magnitude as the convection current. By substracting the displacement current from the total device current as viewed through a current viewing disc resistor in series with the diode, a display of the net avalanche current was obtained. The avalanche current wave shape looks like a half-wave rectified sinusoidal signal with its peak lagging the voltage signal by approximately 80 degrees. In general, the experimental result has been found in good qualitative agreement with theoretical analysis when the particular values of the various parameters characterizing the diode tested are taken into consideration. The anomalous rectification effect in avalanche diodes has also been investigated. The variation of the rectified current agrees with the theoretical analysis even at perturbations as high as 22 percent of the bias voltage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, RF and Microwave Applications and Systems, includes a wide range of articles that discuss RF and microwave systems used for communication and radar and heating applications. Commercial, avionics, medical, and military applications are addressed. An overview of commercial communications systems is provided. Past, current, and emerging cellular systems, navigation systems, and satellite-based systems are discussed. Specific voice and data commercial systems are investigated more thoroughly in individual chapters that follow. Detailed discussions of military electronics, avionics, and radar (both military and automotive) are provided in separate chapters. A chapter focusing on FR/microwave energy used for therapeutic medicine is also provided. Systems considerations including thermal, mechanical, reliability, power management, and safety are discussed in separate chapters. Engineering processes are also explored in articles about corporate initiatives, cost modeling, and design reviews. The book closes with a discussion of the underlying physics of electromagnetic propagation and interference. In addition to new chapters on WiMAX and broadband cable, nearly every existing chapter features extensive updates and several were completely rewritten to reflect the massive changes areas such as radio navigation and electronic warfare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1990 the wireless revolution had begun. In late 2000, Mike Golio gave the world a significant tool to use in this revolution: The RF and Microwave Handbook. Since then, wireless technology spread across the globe with unprecedented speed, fueled by 3G and 4G mobile technology and the proliferation of wireless LANs. Updated to reflect this tremendous growth, the second edition of this widely embraced, bestselling handbook divides its coverage conveniently into a set of three books, each focused on a particular aspect of the technology. Six new chapters cover WiMAX, broadband cable, bit error ratio (BER) testing, high-power PAs (power amplifiers), heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs), as well as an overview of microwave engineering. Over 100 contributors, with diverse backgrounds in academic, industrial, government, manufacturing, design, and research reflect the breadth and depth of the field. This eclectic mix of contributors ensures that the coverage balances fundamental technical issues with the important business and marketing constraints that define commercial RF and microwave engineering. Focused chapters filled with formulas, charts, graphs, diagrams, and tables make the information easy to locate and apply to practical cases. The new format, three tightly focused volumes, provides not only increased information but also ease of use. You can find the information you need quickly, without wading through material you don’t immediately need, giving you access to the caliber of data you have come to expect in a much more user-friendly format.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the high frequency world, the passive technologies required to realize RF and microwave functionality present distinctive challenges. SAW filters, dielectric resonators, MEMS, and waveguide do not have counterparts in the low frequency or digital environment. Even when conventional lumped components can be used in high frequency applications, their behavior does not resemble that observed at lower frequencies. RF and Microwave Passive and Active Technologies provides detailed information about a wide range of component technologies used in modern RF and microwave systems. Updated chapters include new material on such technologies as MEMS, device packaging, surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters, bipolar junction and heterojunction transistors, and high mobility electron transistors (HMETs). The book also features a completely rewritten section on wide bandgap transistors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlighting the challenges RF and microwave circuit designers face in their day-to-day tasks, RF and Microwave Circuits, Measurements, and Modeling explores RF and microwave circuit designs in terms of performance and critical design specifications. The book discusses transmitters and receivers first in terms of functional circuit block and then examines each block individually. Separate articles consider fundamental amplifier issues, low noise amplifiers, power amplifiers for handset applications and high power, power amplifiers. Additional chapters cover other circuit functions including oscillators, mixers, modulators, phase locked loops, filters and multiplexers. New chapters discuss high-power PAs, bit error rate testing, and nonlinear modeling of heterojunction bipolar transistors, while other chapters feature new and updated material that reflects recent progress in such areas as high-volume testing, transmitters and receivers, and CAD tools. The unique behavior and requirements associated with RF and microwave systems establishes a need for unique and complex models and simulation tools. The required toolset for a microwave circuit designer includes unique device models, both 2D and 3D electromagnetic simulators, as well as frequency domain based small signal and large signal circuit and system simulators. This unique suite of tools requires a design procedure that is also distinctive. This book examines not only the distinct design tools of the microwave circuit designer, but also the design procedures that must be followed to use them effectively.

This book contains four chapters and begins with an introduction to the basic concept and developments of microwave power technology. The second chapter deals with the development of the main classes of high-power microwave and optical frequency power generators, such as magnetrons, crossed-field amplifiers, klystrons, beam plasma amplifiers, crossed-field noise sources, triodes, lasers. The third chapter describes the efficient transmission of high microwave power by means of oversize tubular metallic, surface, beam, and free space beam transmission waveguides. The fourth chapter is devoted to the many different approaches to a microwave rectifier. This book will prove useful to microwave power engineers and researcher who are interested in the application areas of the technology.
